Strong normalization for System F by HOAS on top of FOAS
We present a point of view concerning HOAS (Higher-Order Abstract Syntax) and an extensive exercise in HOAS along this point of view. The point of view is that HOAS can be soundly and fruitfully regarded as a definitional extension on top of FOAS (First-Order Abstract Syntax). As such, HOAS is not only an encoding technique, but also a higher-order view of a first-order reality. A rich collection of concepts and proof principles is developed inside the standard mathematical universe to give technical life to this point of view. The exercise consists of a new proof of Strong Normalization for System F. The concepts and results presented here have been formalized in the theorem prover Isabelle/HOL
Reasoning about Concurrency for Security Tunnels
There has been excellent progress on languages for rigorously describing key exchange protocols and techniques for proving that the network security tunnels they establish preserve confidentiality and integrity. New problems arise in describing and analyzing establishment protocols and tunnels when they are used as building blocks to achieve high-level security goals for network administrative domains. We introduce a language called the tunnel calculus and associated analysis techniques that can address functional problems arising in the concurrent establishment of tunnels. In particular, we use the tunnel calculus to explain and resolve cases where interleavings of establishment messages can lead to deadlock. Deadlock can be avoided by making unwelcome security compromises, but we prove that it can be eliminated systematically without such compromises using a concept of session to relate tunnels. Our main results are noninterference and progress theorems familiar to the concurrency community, but not previously applied to tunnel establishment protocols
Factors Affecting Mississippi’s NIPF Landowners’ Reforestation Decisions
Non-industrial private forest (NIPF) landowners have played an increasingly important role in the nation\u27s timber economy. Nearly 70% of the forestland in the South is owned by NIPF landowners (Powell et al., 1994). In Mississippi alone, these landowners control approximately 66% of the state\u27s forestland base (Hartsell and London, 1995). Therefore, NIPF landowners are expected to provide a large portion of the state\u27s supply of timber. However, whether they do so depends largely on how their timberlands are managed. Forest management decisions of NIPF landowners can impact future timber supply due to the magnitude of their collective ownership
Comparison Between Regenerators and Non-Regenerators in Mississippi: A Discriminant Analysis
Nonindustrial private forestland (NIPF) landowners in Mississippi who recently harvested timber were surveyed to examine their regeneration behavior. Differences between regenerators and nonregenerators were investigated by looking at the different factors affecting reforestation decisions. A discriminant analysis was used to identify factors that were useful in differentiating between regenerators and nonregenerators. Ownership size; sociodemographic characteristics such as income, education, place of residence, and age; awareness of existing government incentive/assistance programs; and participation in educational programs were significant variables in differentiating between regenerators and nonregenerators. Landowners who own larger timberlands had a higher propensity to engage in regeneration activities after harvests. This also was true for landowners who had higher income levels and educational attainment, and were younger, city resident, and white. Landowners who were aware of existing government incentive/assistance programs and those who participated in educational programs also were more likely to participate in pine regeneration. Landowners in Mississippi considered both ecological and economic reasons as highly important considerations in their decision to regenerate. The belief that the land would reforest itself to pine naturally, the high cost of reforestation, and lack of information on reforestation options were top reasons cited by landowners for their decision not to regenerate. Asymptotic quasinormal modes of Reissner-Nordstr\"om and Kerr black holes
According to a recent proposal, the so-called Barbero-Immirzi parameter of
Loop Quantum Gravity can be fixed, using Bohr's correspondence principle, from
a knowledge of highly-damped black hole oscillation frequencies. Such
frequencies are rather difficult to compute, even for Schwarzschild black
holes. However, it is now quite likely that they may provide a fundamental link
between classical general relativity and quantum theories of gravity. Here we
carry out the first numerical computation of very highly damped quasinormal
modes (QNM's) for charged and rotating black holes. In the Reissner-Nordstr\"om
case QNM frequencies and damping times show an oscillatory behaviour as a
function of charge. The oscillations become faster as the mode order increases.
At fixed mode order, QNM's describe spirals in the complex plane as the charge
is increased, tending towards a well defined limit as the hole becomes
extremal. Kerr QNM's have a similar oscillatory behaviour when the angular
index . For the real part of Kerr QNM frequencies tends to
, being the angular velocity of the black hole horizon, while

Hadronic Production of Doubly Charmed Baryons via Charm Exitation in Proton
The production of baryons containing two charmed quarks Xi_cc in hadronic
interactions at high energies and large transverse momenta is considered. It is
supposed, that Xi_cc-baryon is formed during a non-perturbative fragmentation
of the (cc)-diquark, which was produced in the hard process of -quark
scattering from the colliding protons: c+c -> (cc) +g. It is shown that such
mechanism enhances the expected doubly charmed baryon production cross section
on Tevatron and LHC colliders approximately 2 times in contrast to predictions,
obtained in the model of gluon - gluon production of (cc)-diquarks in the

Mutations in the mitochondrial cysteinyl-tRNA synthase gene, CARS2, lead to a severe epileptic encephalopathy and complex movement disorder
Background: Mitochondrial disease is often suspected in cases of severe epileptic encephalopathy especially when a complex movement disorder, liver involvement and progressive developmental regression are present. Although mutations in either mitochondrial DNA or POLG are often present, other nuclear defects in mitochondrial DNA replication and protein translation have been associated with a severe epileptic encephalopathy.
Methods: and results We identified a proband with an epileptic encephalopathy, complex movement disorder and a combined mitochondrial respiratory chain enzyme deficiency. The child presented with neurological regression, complex movement disorder and intractable seizures. A combined deficiency of mitochondrial complexes I, III and IV was noted in liver tissue, along with increased mitochondrial DNA content in skeletal muscle. Incomplete assembly of complex V, using blue native polyacrylamide gel electrophoretic analysis and complex I, using western blotting, suggested a disorder of mitochondrial transcription or translation. Exome sequencing identified compound heterozygous mutations in CARS2, a mitochondrial aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase. Both mutations affect highly conserved amino acids located within the functional ligase domain of the cysteinyl-tRNA synthase. A specific decrease in the amount of charged mt-tRNACys was detected in patient fibroblasts compared with controls. Retroviral transfection of the wild-type CARS2 into patient skin fibroblasts led to the correction of the incomplete assembly of complex V, providing functional evidence for the role of CARS2 mutations in disease aetiology.
Conclusions: Our findings indicate that mutations in CARS2 result in a mitochondrial translational defect as seen in individuals with mitochondrial epileptic encephalopathy
A Study of the \eta \pi^{0} Spectrum and Search for a J^{PC} = 1^{-+} Exotic Meson
A partial wave analysis (PWA) of the of the system (where ) produced in the charge exchange reaction at an incident momentum of 18 GeV is presented as a function of
invariant mass, , and momentum transfer squared,
, from the incident to the outgoing system. , and waves were included in the PWA. The
and states are clearly observed in the overall
effective mass distribution as well as in the amplitudes associated with
wave and waves respectively after partial wave decomposition. The observed
distributions in moments (averages of spherical harmonics) were compared to the
results from the PWA and the two are consistent. The distribution in
for individual waves associated with natural and
unnatural parity exchange in the -channel are consistent with Regge
phenomenology. Of particular interest in this study is the wave since this
leads to an exotic for the system. A wave is
present in the data, however attempts to describe the mass dependence of the
amplitude and phase motion with respect to the wave as a Breit-Wigner
resonance are problematic. This has implications regarding the existence of a
reported exotic meson decaying into with a mass

Utility of serum biomarker indices for staging of hepatic fibrosis before and after venesection in patients with hemochromatosis caused by variants in HFE
Background & Aims
Hemochromatosis that is associated with variants in the homeostatic iron regulator gene (HFE) is characterized by intestinal absorption of iron and excessive body and hepatic iron stores; it can lead to hepatic fibrosis and cirrhosis. Fibrosis has been staged by analysis of liver biopsies, but non-invasive staging methods are available. We evaluated the ability of aspartate aminotransferase:platelet ratio index (APRI), the fibrosis-4 (FIB-4) index, and gamma-glutamyl transferase:platelet ratio (GPR) to assess hepatic fibrosis staging in subjects with HFE-associated hemochromatosis, using liver biopsy-staged fibrosis as the reference standard. Methods
We performed a retrospective, cross-sectional analysis of 181 subjects with HFE-associated hemochromatosis and hepatic fibrosis staged by biopsy analysis and available serum samples. We calculated APRI, FIB-4, and GPR at diagnosis for all 181 subjects and following venesection therapy in 64 of these subjects (7 subjects had follow-up biopsy analysis). We used area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) analysis to assess the relationships between APRI score, FIB-4 score, and GPR and advanced (F3–F4) fibrosis and to select cut-off values. Results
Hepatic fibrosis stage correlated with APRI score (r = 0.54; P \u3c .0001), FIB-4 score (r = 0.35; P \u3c .0001), and GPR (r = 0.36, P \u3c .0001). An APRI score above 0.44 identified patients with advanced fibrosis with an AUROC of 0.88, 79.4% sensitivity, 79.4% specificity, and 81% accuracy. A FIB-4 score above 1.1 identified patients with advanced fibrosis with an AUROC of 0.86, 80% sensitivity, 80.3% specificity, and 81% accuracy. A GPR above 0.27 identified patients with advanced fibrosis with an AUROC of 0.76, 67.7% sensitivity, 70.3% specificity, and 69% accuracy. APRI score was significantly more accurate than GPR (P = .05) in detecting advanced fibrosis; there was no difference between APRI and FIB-4. Venesection treatment was associated with significant reductions in APRI (P \u3c .0001) and GPR (P\u3c .001), paralleling fibrosis regression observed in available liver biopsies. Post-venesection APRI identified 87% of subjects with advanced fibrosis that decreased to levels that indicate stage F1–F2 fibrosis. Conclusions
In a retrospective study of 181 subjects with HFE-associated hemochromatosis, we found that APRI and FIB-4 scores identified patients with advanced hepatic fibrosis with 81% accuracy. APRI scores might also be used to monitor fibrosis regression following venesection
