    Three dimensional inelastic finite element analysis of laminated composites

    Formulations of the inelastic response of laminated composites to thermal and mechanical loading are used as the basis for development of the computer NALCOM (Nonlinear Analysis of Laminated Composites) computer program which uses a fully three dimensional isoparametric finite element with 24 nodes and 72 degrees of freedom. An incremental solution is performed with nonlinearities introduced as pseudoloads computed for initial strains. Equilibrium iteration may be performed at every step. Elastic and elastic-plastic response of boron/epoxy and graphite/epoxy graphite/epoxy and problems of curing 0/90 sub s Gr/Ep laminates with and without circular holes are analyzed. Mechanical loading of + or - 45sub s Gr/Ep laminates is modeled and symmetry conditions which exist in angle-ply laminates are discussed. Results are compared to experiments and other analytical models when possible. All models are seen to agree reasonably well with experimetnal results for off-axis tensile coupons. The laminate analyses show the three dimensional effects which are present near holes and free corners

    The application of amino acid racemization in the acid soluble fraction of enamel to the estimation of the age of human teeth

    Estimation of age-at-death for skeletonised forensic remains is one of the most significant problems in forensic anthropology. The majority of existing morphological and histological techniques are highly inaccurate, and show a bias towards underestimating the age of older individuals. One technique which has been successful in forensic age estimation is amino acid racemization in dentine. However, this method cannot be used on remains where the post-mortem interval is greater than 20 years. An alternative approach is to measure amino acid racemization in dental enamel, which is believed to be more resistant to change post-mortem. The extent of amino acid racemization in the acid soluble fraction of the enamel proteins was determined for modem known age teeth. A strong correlation was observed between the age of the tooth and the extent of racemization. No systematic bias in the direction of age estimation errors was detected. For the majority of teeth analyzed, the presence of dental caries did not affect the results obtained. In a minority of cases, carious teeth showed a higher level of racemization than would be expected given the age of the individual. These results indicate that amino acid racemization in enamel has the potential to be used in age estimation of skeletal remains. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved

    Phase diagram for interacting Bose gases

    We propose a new form of the inversion method in terms of a selfenergy expansion to access the phase diagram of the Bose-Einstein transition. The dependence of the critical temperature on the interaction parameter is calculated. This is discussed with the help of a new condition for Bose-Einstein condensation in interacting systems which follows from the pole of the T-matrix in the same way as from the divergence of the medium-dependent scattering length. A many-body approximation consisting of screened ladder diagrams is proposed which describes the Monte Carlo data more appropriately. The specific results are that a non-selfconsistent T-matrix leads to a linear coefficient in leading order of 4.7, the screened ladder approximation to 2.3, and the selfconsistent T-matrix due to the effective mass to a coefficient of 1.3 close to the Monte Carlo data

The analysis utilizes a panel data set from 21 French regions over the period 1973-1998 and a dynamic demand specification to study the gasoline demand in France.     Collective Excitations of a Two-Component Bose Condensate at Finite Temperature

    We compare the collective modes for Bose-condensed systems with two degenerate components with and without spontaneous intercomponent coherence at finite temperature using the time-dependent Hartree-Fock approximation. We show that the interaction between the condensate and non-condensate in these two cases results in qualitatively different collective excitation spectra. We show that at zero temperature the single-particle excitations of the incoherent Bose condensate can be probed by intercomponent excitations.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, Submitted to PR
