Identification and control of spacecraft
Information on the identification and control of spacecraft is given. Maximum likelihood estimation, identification accuracy issues, steady state identifiability analysis and stochastic error with process noise are among the topics addressed
Refining tree recruitment models
We used a micrometeorological dispersal model to simulate seed and seedling distributions derived from subcanopy balsam fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.) source trees in a trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) dominated forest. Our first objective was to determine the effect of substituting basal area for cone production as a proxy for seed output. The results showed that the r2 from the regression of predicted versus observed densities increased by ∼5% for seeds and ∼15% for seedling simulations. Our second objective was to determine the effects of changing the median horizontal wind speed. The median speed in this forest environment varies according to the proportion of leaves abscised. For values of the median expected wind speed between the extremes of leafless and full-canopy forests, the r2 of predicted versus observed varied between 0.35 and 0.49 for seeds and between 0.33 and 0.62 for seedling simulations. We demonstrated that the simple one-dimensional model can have added precision if the dispersal parameters are chosen so as to allow more fine-scale variation
Development of ultrasonic methods for hemodynamic measurements
A transcutanous method to measure instantaneous mean blood flow in peripheral arteries of the human body was defined. Transcutanous and implanted cuff ultrasound velocity measurements were evaluated, and the accuracies of velocity, flow, and diameter measurements were assessed for steady flow. Performance criteria were established for the pulsed Doppler velocity meter (PUDVM), and performance tests were conducted. Several improvements are suggested
Endogenous factors enhance HIV infection of tissue naive CD4 T cells by stimulating high molecular mass APOBEC3G complex formation
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) can infect resting CD4 T cells residing in lymphoid tissues but not those circulating in peripheral blood. The molecular mechanisms producing this difference remain unknown. We explored the potential role of the tissue microenvironment and its influence on the action of the antiviral factor APOBEC3G (A3G) in regulating permissivity to HIV infection. We found that endogenous IL-2 and -15 play a key role in rendering resident naive CD4 T cells susceptible to HIV infection. Infection of memory CD4 T cells also requires endogenous soluble factors, but not IL-2 or -15. A3G is found in a high molecular mass complex in HIV infection–permissive, tissue-resident naive CD4 T cells but resides in a low molecular mass form in nonpermissive, blood-derived naive CD4 T cells. Upon treatment with endogenous soluble factors, these cells become permissive for HIV infection, as low molecular mass A3G is induced to assemble into high molecular mass complexes. These findings suggest that in lymphoid tissues, endogenous soluble factors, likely including IL-2 and -15 and others, stimulate the formation of high molecular mass A3G complexes in tissue-resident naive CD4 T cells, thereby relieving the potent postentry restriction block for HIV infection conferred by low molecular mass A3G
Arene oxidation with malonoyl peroxides
Malonoyl peroxide 7, prepared in a single step from the commercially available diacid, is an effective reagent for the
oxidation of aromatics. Reaction of an arene with peroxide 7 at room temperature leads to the corresponding protected phenol
which can be unmasked by aminolysis. An ionic mechanism consistent with the experimental findings and supported by isotopic
labeling, Hammett analysis, EPR investigations and reactivity profile studies is proposed
Noise prediction for jetstar prop-fan test
The acoustic calculations reported in this memorandum are for two model prop-fan designs (SR-2 and SR-3 blades) scheduled for test on top of Jetstar aircraft. The predicted acoustic pressure signatures and spectra for selected microphone positions on the fuselage and operating conditions are presented. A detailed presentation of the input data, the acoustic results, and the corrections for microphone fuselage reflection are included. The general trend observed in these calculations is that the acoustically optimized model (using SR-3 blades) is substantially quieter than the model with SR-2 blades. This latter design has conventional straight blades
Introduction to the computational structural mechanics testbed
The Computational Structural Mechanics (CSM) testbed software system based on the SPAR finite element code and the NICE system is described. This software is denoted NICE/SPAR. NICE was developed at Lockheed Palo Alto Research Laboratory and contains data management utilities, a command language interpreter, and a command language definition for integrating engineering computational modules. SPAR is a system of programs used for finite element structural analysis developed for NASA by Lockheed and Engineering Information Systems, Inc. It includes many complementary structural analysis, thermal analysis, utility functions which communicate through a common database. The work on NICE/SPAR was motivated by requirements for a highly modular and flexible structural analysis system to use as a tool in carrying out research in computational methods and exploring computer hardware. Analysis examples are presented which demonstrate the benefits gained from a combination of the NICE command language with a SPAR computational modules
Representative bureaucracy: does female police leadership affect gender-based violence arrests?
Representative bureaucracy theory postulates that passive representation leads to active representation of minority groups. This article investigates the passive representation of female police officers at leadership levels and the active representation of women vis-a-vis gender-based violence arrest rates in the UK. Much of the extant research on representative bureaucracy is located at street level, with evidence showing that discretionary power of minority bureaucrats can lead to active representation. This article is focused on leadership levels of a public bureaucracy. The empirical research is based upon a panel dataset of female police officers as an independent variable and gender-based violence arrest rates as a dependent variable. The analysis reveals that there is little evidence of active representation of women by female police leadership
The Megamaser Cosmology Project. X. High Resolution Maps and Mass Constraint for SMBHs
We present high resolution (sub-mas) VLBI maps of nuclear H2O megamasers for
seven galaxies. In UGC6093, the well-aligned systemic masers and high-velocity
masers originate in an edge-on, flat disk and we determine the mass of the
central SMBH to be M_SMBH = 2.58*10^7Msun(+-7%). For J1346+5228, the
distribution of masers is consistent with a disk, but the faint high-velocity
masers are only marginally detected, and we constrain the mass of the SMBH to
be in the range 1.5-2.0*10^7Msun. The origin of the masers in Mrk1210 is less
clear, as the systemic and high-velocity masers are misaligned and show a
disorganized velocity structure. We present one possible model in which the
masers originate in a tilted, warped disk, but we do not rule out the
possibility of other explanations including outflow masers. In NGC6926, we
detect a set of redshifted masers, clustered within a pc of each other, and a
single blueshifted maser about 4.4pc away, an offset that would be unusually
large for a maser disk system. Nevertheless, if it is a disk system, we
estimate the enclosed mass to be M_SMBH<4.8*10^7 Msun . For NGC5793, we detect
redshifted masers spaced about 1.4pc from a clustered set of blueshifted
features. The orientation of the structure supports a disk scenario as
suggested by Hagiwara et al.(2001). We estimate the enclosed mass to be M
SMBH<1.3*10^7 Msun. For NGC2824 and J0350-0127, the masers may be associated
with pc or sub-pc scale jets or outflows.Comment: Accepted by Ap
