Linguistic Landscapes in Latin America:The Case of Indigenous Languages in Urban Settings
Central to this study is to delve into the linguistic landscapes of three Latin American cities, i.e. Lima, Mexico City, and Santiago, and explore the processes behind the absence of Amerindian elements in their open spaces. The underlying notion is that visibility, vitality and symbolism are key concepts to understand how a city chooses to express itself through the use of written language. But also, that linguistic landscapes of an urban area do not necessarily reflect the presence of specific language communities. Due to the status allocated to indigenous minorities within the social hierarchy in most Latin American countries, it is noticeable that Amerindian languages are absent from signs, advertisement, place names, public notifications, etc. In order to review the attitudes of non-indigenous citizens towards Amerindian languages, a series of interviews and surveys were conducted in Lima and Santiago. The results indicate that most citizens see functional purposes in recognizing graphically the linguistic heritage of minorities, agree that city authorities fail to promote an all-embracing language policy, and view positively the visual recognition of linguistic heterogeneity
Real Options: A Tool for Managing Technical Risk in a Mine Plan
NPV is a static measure of project value which does not discriminate between levels of internal and external risk in project valuation. Due to current investment project?s characteristics, a much more complex model is needed: one that includes the value of flexibility and the different risk levels associated with variables subject to uncertainty (price, costs, exchange rates, grade and tonnage of the deposits, cut off grade, among many others). Few of these variables present any correlation or can be treated uniformly. In this context, Real Option Valuation (ROV) arose more than a decade ago, as a mainly theoretical model with the potential for simultaneous calculation of the risk associated with such variables. This paper reviews the literature regarding the application of Real Options Valuation in mining, noting the prior focus on external risks, and presents a case study where ROV is applied to quantify risk associated to mine planning
Sorption direct air capture with CO2 utilization
Direct air capture (DAC) is gathering momentum since it has vast potential and high flexibility to collect CO2 from discrete sources as “synthetic tree” when compared with current CO2 capture technologies, e.g., amine based post-combustion capture. It is considered as one of the emerging carbon capture technologies in recent decades and remains in a prototype investigation stage with many technical challenges to be overcome. The objective of this paper is to comprehensively discuss the state-of-the-art of DAC and CO2 utilization, note unresolved technology bottlenecks, and give investigation perspectives for commercial large-scale applications. Firstly, characteristics of physical and chemical sorbents are evaluated. Then, the representative capture processes, e.g., pressure swing adsorption, temperature swing adsorption and other ongoing absorption chemical loops, are described and compared. Methods of CO2 conversion including synthesis of fuels and chemicals as well as biological utilization are reviewed. Finally, techno-economic analysis and life cycle assessment for DAC application are summarized. Based on research achievements, future challenges of DAC and CO2 conversion are presented, which include providing synthesis guidelines for obtaining sorbents with the desired characteristics, uncovering the mechanisms for different working processes and establishing evaluation criteria in terms of technical and economic aspects
Inhibitors against Fungal Cell Wall Remodeling Enzymes
Fungal β-1,3-glucan glucanosyltransferases are glucan-remodeling enzymes that play important roles in cell wall integrity, and are essential for the viability of pathogenic fungi and yeasts. As such, they are considered possible drug targets, although inhibitors of this class of enzymes have not yet been reported. Herein we report a multidisciplinary approach based on a structure-guided design using a highly conserved transglycosylase from Sacharomyces cerevisiae, that leads to carbohydrate derivatives with high affinity for Aspergillus fumigatus Gel4. We demonstrate by X-ray crystallography that the compounds bind in the active site of Gas2/Gel4 and interact with the catalytic machinery. The topological analysis of noncovalent interactions demonstrates that the combination of a triazole with positively charged aromatic moieties are important for optimal interactions with Gas2/Gel4 through unusual pyridinium cation–π and face-to-face π–π interactions. Microwave heating as a novel route for obtaining carbon precursors from anthracene oil
This work describes a novel route for the preparation of pitches by oxidative polymerization of an industrial anthracene oil (AO) in a microwave semi-pilot equipment consisting in a multimode applicator having a 2.45 GHz magnetron with variable microwave power. The experimental five variables of microwave heating of AO air-blowing range between 320-380 ˚C (temperature), 0.2 - 3.9 ˚C min-1 (heating rate), 1.5 - 5 h (soaking time), 16 – 20.5 % (air/AO ratio ) and 200 – 1500 g (initial weight). Their effect on the overall microwave air-blowing process is evaluated by means of a statistical analysis. A detailed characterization of the pitches has been carried out in terms of ultimate analysis, softening point, solubility parameters (toluene insolubles (TI) and quinoline insolubles (QI)) and thermogravimetric analysis. The experiments were also carried out by using conventional heating for comparative purposes. The detailed study of the electric energy consumption of the overall microwave treatment allows estimating a significant electric energy saving of about 20 % when compared to conventional heating thus representing an excellent result in the production of carbon precursors
Pro-/antiinflammatory dysregulation in early psychosis: Results from a 1-year follow-Up study
Background: Previous studies indicated a systemic deregulation of the pro-/antiinflammatory balance in subjects after 6 months of a first psychotic episode. This disruption was reexamined 12 months after diagnosis to identify potential risk/ protective factors and associations with symptom severity.
Methods: Eighty-five subjects were followed during 12 months and the determination of the same pro-/antiinflammatory mediators was carried out in plasma and peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to identify risk/protective factors. Multiple linear regression models were performed to detect the change of each biological marker during follow-up in relation to clinical characteristics and confounding factors.
Results: This study suggests a more severe systemic pro-/antiinflammatory deregulation than in earlier pathological stages in first psychotic episode, because not only were intracellular components of the inflammatory response increased but also the majority of soluble elements. Nitrite plasma levels and cyclooxygenase-2 expression in peripheral blood mononuclear cells are reliable potential risk factors and 15d-prostaglandin-J2 plasma levels a protection biomarker. An interesting relationship exists between antipsychotic dose and the levels of prostaglandin-E2 (inverse) and 15d-prostaglandin-J2 (direct). An inverse relationship between the Global Assessment of Functioning scale and lipid peroxidation is also present.
Conclusions: Summing up, pro-/antiinflammatory mediators can be used as risk/protection biomarkers. The inverse association between oxidative/nitrosative damage and the Global Assessment of Functioning scale, and the possibility that one of the targets of antipsychotics could be the restoration of the pro-/antiinflammatory balance support the use of antiinflammatory drugs as coadjuvant to antipsychotics
