Snap-Off Criteria for Dynamic Flow Conditions in Constricted Circular Capillaries

    Get PDF
One of the main mechanisms of emulsion formation in porous media is the snap-off; invasion of the wetting phase flowing adjacent to the pore wall within a constriction mostly occupied by the non-wetting phase, causing breakup into isolated drops of this phase. The current approaches to determine the occurrence of this phenomenon have been formulated for quasistatic flow conditions, where the mechanisms governing the flow are controlled by the geometry of the capillary. However, some studies suggest that the drop breakup does not occur above a capillary number threshold and given a certain viscosity ratio, even if the static breakup criteria are met. In this paper, we extend the current numerical analysis of the capillary number upper limit (Calim), in which the snap-off is inhibited, by considering the effect of viscosity ratio on the dynamics of immiscible two-phase flow through constricted circular capillaries. Based on the results of this study, empirical mathematical expressions that relate the main physical variables of the flow were established as breakup criteria for dynamic flow conditions. The dynamic breakup criteria takes into account, jointly: some aspects of rheology of the two-phase system, such as the viscosity ratio; the dynamic factors of the flow, encapsulated in the local capillary number; and an integral form of the capillary geometry, represented by a parameter that relates both radii and the distance between them

Past and recent effects of livestock activity on the genetic diversity and population structure of native guanaco populations of arid patagonia

Extensive livestock production and urbanization entail modifications of natural landscapes, including installation of fences, development of agriculture, urbanization of natural areas, and construction of roads and infrastructure that, together, impact native fauna. Here, we evaluate the diversity and genetic structure of endemic guanacos (Lama guanicoe) of the Monte and Patagonian Steppe of central Argentina, which have been reduced and displaced by sheep ranching and other impacts of human activities. Analyses of genetic variation of microsatellite loci and d-loop revealed high levels of genetic variation and latitudinal segregation of mitochondrial haplotypes. There were indications of at least two historical populations in the Monte and the Patagonian Steppe based on shared haplotypes and shared demographic history among localities. Currently, guanacos are structured into three groups that were probably reconnected relatively recently, possibly facilitated by a reduction of sheep and livestock in recent decades and a recovery of the guanaco populations. These results provide evidence of the genetic effects of livestock activity and urbanization on wild herbivore populations, which were possibly exacerbated by an arid environment with limited productive areas. The results highlight the importance of enacting conservation management plans to ensure the persistence of ancestral and ecologically functional populations of guanacos.Fil: Mesas, Andrés. To determine the relationship between serum concentrations of uric acid and insulin secretion with hyperglycaemic clamp technique among adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) without hyperuricemia, we carried out a cross-sectional study on 45 patients of both gender. We observed correlation between uric acid with male gender r = 0.710 (P = 0.001). Also correlation between uric acid and total insulin secretion was positive r = 0.295 (P = 0.049). As well as a positive correlation adjusted for body mass index was demonstrated for the first, second, and total phases of insulin secretion, respectively, r = 0.438 (P = 0.022), r = 0.433 (P = 0.022), and r = 0.439 (P = 0.024). Serum concentration of uric acid showed a positive relationship with the total phase of insulin secretion; even in states prior to hyperuricemia, uric acid can play an important role in the function of the beta cell in patients with DM2

The aniseed plant Pimpinella anisum (Saunf-Hindi) is one of the most ancient medicinal plants used by man. Currently, this plant has several uses in the food industry as spice, whereas in the pharmacopoeia, it is used as an expectorant in digestive disturbances, as mild diuretic, and as insect repellent in external use. In this paper, we evaluated the biological activity of methanolic extract of P. anisum on in vitro growth of Entamoeba histolytica HM1-IMSS under axenic conditions. We observed that the growth inhibition of E. histolytica was at CI50 = 0.034 μg/mL. Results confirm the antiamoebic activity of the methanolic extract of P. anisum. Keywords: Pimpinella anisum, Entamoeba histolytica, antiamoebic activity, medicinal plantsAfrican Journal of Biotechnology Vol. 12(16), pp. 2065-206
