Assessment of burned forest area severity and postfire regrowth in chapada Diamantina National Park (Bahia, Brazil) using dNBR and RdNBR spectral indices
Fire scar detection through orbital data can be done using specific techniques, such as the use of spectral indices like the normalized burn ratio (NBR), which are designed to help identify burnt areas as they have typical spectral responses. This paper aims to characterize burn severity and regrowth in areas hit by three fires in the Chapada Diamantina National Park (Bahia, Brazil) and its surrounding area through the differenced normalized burn ratio (dNBR) and relative differenced normalized burn ratio (RdNBR) spectral indices. The data acquired were pretreated and prepared adequately to calculate the indices. We conclude that for the study area, considering the limitations of fieldwork, the multitemporal index dNBR and the relative index RdNBR are important tools for classifying burnt areas and can be used to assess the regrowth of vegetation. This research was partially financed by FAPESB (Research Support Foundation of the State of Bahia)

Remote Experimentation supported by Learning Analytics and Recommender Systems
This paper proposes a process based on learning analytics and recommender systems targeted at making suggestions to students about their remote laboratories activities and providing insights to all stakeholders taking part in the learning process. To apply the process, a log with requests and responses of remote experiments from the VISIR project were analyzed. A request is the setup of the experiment including the assembled circuits and the configurations of the measuring equipment. In turn, a response is a message provided by the measurement server indicating measures or an error when it is not possible to execute the experiment. Along the two phases of analysis, the log was analyzed and summarized in order to provide insights about students' experiments. In addition, there is a recommendation service responsible for analyzing the requests thus returning, in case of error, precise information about the assembly of circuits or configurations. The evaluation of the process is consistent in what regards its ability to afford recommendations to the students as they carry out the experiments. Moreover, the summarized information intends to offer teachers means to better understand and develop strategies to scaffold students' learning.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Immigrant community integration in world cities
As a consequence of the accelerated globalization process, today major cities
all over the world are characterized by an increasing multiculturalism. The
integration of immigrant communities may be affected by social polarization and
spatial segregation. How are these dynamics evolving over time? To what extent
the different policies launched to tackle these problems are working? These are
critical questions traditionally addressed by studies based on surveys and
census data. Such sources are safe to avoid spurious biases, but the data
collection becomes an intensive and rather expensive work. Here, we conduct a
comprehensive study on immigrant integration in 53 world cities by introducing
an innovative approach: an analysis of the spatio-temporal communication
patterns of immigrant and local communities based on language detection in
Twitter and on novel metrics of spatial integration. We quantify the "Power of
Integration" of cities --their capacity to spatially integrate diverse
cultures-- and characterize the relations between different cultures when
acting as hosts or immigrants.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures + Appendi
Effect of Uncaria tomentosa
Background/Aim. The use of herbal products as a supplement to minimize the effects of chemotherapy for cancer treatment requires further attention with respect to the activity and toxicity of chemotherapy. Uncaria tomentosa extract, which contains oxindole alkaloids, is one of these herbal products. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether Uncaria tomentosa extract modulates apoptosis induced by chemotherapy exposure. Materials and Methods. Colorectal adenocarcinoma cells (HT29 cells) were grown in the presence of oxaliplatin and/or Uncaria tomentosa extract. Results. The hydroalcoholic extract of Uncaria tomentosa enhanced chemotherapy-induced apoptosis, with an increase in the percentage of Annexin positive cells, an increase in caspase activities, and an increase of DNA fragments in culture of the neoplastic cells. Moreover, antioxidant activity may be related to apoptosis. Conclusion. Uncaria tomentosa extract has a role for cancer patients as a complementary therapy. Further studies evaluating these beneficial effects with other chemotherapy drugs are recommended
