Plastic Deformation of 2D Crumpled Wires
When a single long piece of elastic wire is injected trough channels into a
confining two-dimensional cavity, a complex structure of hierarchical loops is
formed. In the limit of maximum packing density, these structures are described
by several scaling laws. In this paper it is investigated this packing process
but using plastic wires which give origin to completely irreversible structures
of different morphology. In particular, it is studied experimentally the
plastic deformation from circular to oblate configurations of crumpled wires,
obtained by the application of an axial strain. Among other things, it is shown
that in spite of plasticity, irreversibility, and very large deformations,
scaling is still observed.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figure
Parameterized Complexity of Equitable Coloring
A graph on vertices is equitably -colorable if it is -colorable and
every color is used either or times.
Such a problem appears to be considerably harder than vertex coloring, being
even for cographs and interval graphs.
In this work, we prove that it is for block
graphs and for disjoint union of split graphs when parameterized by the number
of colors; and for -free interval graphs
when parameterized by treewidth, number of colors and maximum degree,
generalizing a result by Fellows et al. (2014) through a much simpler
reduction.
Using a previous result due to Dominique de Werra (1985), we establish a
dichotomy for the complexity of equitable coloring of chordal graphs based on
the size of the largest induced star.
Finally, we show that \textsc{equitable coloring} is when
parameterized by the treewidth of the complement graph
Structural properties of crumpled cream layers
The cream layer is a complex heterogeneous material of biological origin
which forms spontaneously at the air-milk interface. Here, it is studied the
crumpling of a single cream layer packing under its own weight at room
temperature in three-dimensional space. The structure obtained in these
circumstances has low volume fraction and anomalous fractal dimensions. Direct
means and noninvasive NMR imaging technique are used to investigate the
internal and external structure of these systems.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, accepted in J. Phys. D: Appl. Phy

Toxicity of the essential oils from Piper hispidinervum C. DC. and Piper callosum Ruiz Pav. to cupuassu fruit borer Conotrachelus sp. (Coleoptera: Curculionidae).
The genus Piper has various plants species with insecticide potential, for example Piper hispidinervum C. DC. and Piper callosum Ruiz & Pav. One way for to comprove the insecticide activity of plants is to test the application of its essential oil and to verify the insect mortality. The target-insect used in experiments was the curculio Conotrachelus sp. This insect is considered a pest in the cupuassu (Theobroma grandiflorum) tillage. Therefore, the aim with this work was evaluated the toxicity of the essential oils from P. hispidinervum and P. callosum to the cupuassu fruit borer Conotrachelus sp

Radiative Corrections to the Aharonov-Bohm Scattering
We consider the scattering of relativistic electrons from a thin magnetic
flux tube and perturbatively calculate the order , radiative
correction, to the first order Born approximation. We show also that the second
order Born amplitude vanishes, and obtain a finite inclusive cross section for
the one-body scattering which incorporates soft photon bremsstrahlung effects.
Moreover, we determine the radiatively corrected Aharonov-Bohm potential and,
in particular, verify that an induced magnetic field is generated outside of
the flux tube.Comment: 14 pages, revtex, 3 figure

Unipolar resistive switching in metal oxide/organic semiconductor non-volatile memories as a critical phenomenon
Diodes incorporating a bilayer of an organic semiconductor and a wide bandgap metal oxide can show unipolar, non-volatile memory behavior after electroforming. The prolonged bias voltage stress induces defects in the metal oxide with an areal density exceeding 10(17) m(-2). We explain the electrical bistability by the coexistence of two thermodynamically stable phases at the interface between an organic semiconductor and metal oxide. One phase contains mainly ionized defects and has a low work function, while the other phase has mainly neutral defects and a high work function. In the diodes, domains of the phase with a low work function constitute current filaments. The phase composition and critical temperature are derived from a 2D Ising model as a function of chemical potential. The model predicts filamentary conduction exhibiting a negative differential resistance and nonvolatile memory behavior. The model is expected to be generally applicable to any bilayer system that shows unipolar resistive switching.
