Evaluation of the biocompatibility of root canal sealers using subcutaneous implants

The purpose of this study was to evaluate in vivo the biocompatibility of Endométhasone, Pulp Canal Sealer EWT and AH-Plus root canal sealers after implantation in rat connective tissue. Twenty-four Wistar-Furth rats were used. Polyethylene tubes were filled with the sealers and implanted into specific dorsal subdermal tissue sites of the rats. Implants were removed after 3, 7 and 30 days, fixed and processed for glycol methacrylate-embedding technique to be examined microscopically. On the 3rd day, there was a mild inflammatory reaction to Pulp Canal Sealer EWT implants, but a severe response to the other sealers with presence of acute inflammatory cells. On the 7th day, tissue organization was more evident with attenuation of the inflammatory reaction, especially for the AH-Plus implants. On the 30th day, connective tissue with few inflammatory cells was observed in contact with all sealer implants. In this time interval, the tissue in contact with Pulp Canal Sealer EWT implants was more organized, while the tissue close to Endométhasone and AH-Plus implants showed a mild persistent inflammatory reaction and had similar results to each other. In conclusion, the sealers had a similar pattern of irritation, which was more severe in the beginning and milder with time, in such a way that all sealers showed a persistent mild reaction. Pulp Canal Sealer EWT yielded better tissue organization than Endométhasone and AH-Plus, which, in turn, showed similar results to each other

Programa de habitação/reabilitação do centro histórico de São Luís do Maranhão, Brasil (2000-2003)

A cidade de São Luís, capital do Estado do Maranhão, situada na região nordeste do Brasil, possui um valioso acervo de arquitetura civil, remanescente dos séculos XVIII e XIX. Esse legado arquitetônico, que se concentra na Praia Grande e Desterro, bairros mais antigos da cidade, compõe hoje o centro histórico de São Luís, tombado (classificado) pelo governo federal e estadual e inscrito, em 1997, na Lista de Patrimônio Mundial. No século XX, o Maranhão passou por um longo período de estagnação econômica, e a partir de 1950, com a expansão urbana da cidade, a população abandonou a área mais antiga para residir em outros bairros da cidade. Como conseqüência, os sobrados e solares que antes abrigavam a elite, uma vez abandonados, foram, ao poucos, se transformando em ruínas. Para reverter o processo de arruinamento de alguns imóveis, foi elaborado o Programa de Habitação no Centro Histórico de São Luís, executado no período de 2000 a 2003, pelo governo do estado, como o objetivo de reabilitar prédios históricos de propriedade do governo do estado, para habitação e comércio, considerando a vocação da área e os investimentos em infra-estruturas já efetuados. Foram reabilitados cinco sobrados edificados nos séculos XVIII e XIX, em estado precário de conservação, que tiveram seus espaços internos transformados em lojas no pavimento térreo, e apartamentos nos pavimentos superiores, somando no total 18 lojas e 30 apartamentos. Os apartamentos foram destinados, por meio de sorteio, a funcionários públicos do estado. Para participar do Programa, os candidatos tinham que trabalhar no centro histórico, não possuir imóveis na cidade e ganhar até cinco salários mínimos. Numa avaliação mais geral, o Programa teve aprovação da maioria dos seus usuários.The city of São Luís, capital of Maranhão, located in northeastern Brazil, has a valuable collection of civil architecture, remnants of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This architectural legacy, mainly in Praia Grande and Desterro, the oldest neighborhoods of the city, belonging to the historic center of São Luís, classified by the national and state governments, being included in the World Heritage List, in 1997. In the twentieth century, Maranhão went through a long period of economic stagnation, and from 1950 with the expansion of the town, the population moves from the old center area to other city neighborhoods. As a result, houses that once sheltered the nobility, were abandoned, and are gradually turning into ruins. To reverse the degradation process, it was implemented the Programa de Habitação, directed to the Historic Center of São Luís, between 2000 and 2003 by the state government, aimed to: rehabilitate historic buildings owned by the state government, converting them into housing and shops, according to the specificity of the surrounding area and to the infrastructures investment already made. Five houses from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in a critical conservation state were rehabilitated, being their spaces converted into shops on the ground floor and apartments on upper floors. In total, 18 shops and 30 apartments were created. The apartments were allocated, through a gamble, to state public officials. To participate in the program, applicants had to work in the historical city center, not owning any property in the city, and earn monthly up to five times the minimum salary. From a general assessment, the program was positively appreciated by most users

Controle genético do comprimento e do número de nós do ramo principal em feijão-caupi.

O feijão-caupi [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.] é uma importante leguminosa, fonte de proteína cuja plasticidade permite a adaptação em diferentes condições ambientais. A tendência atual é a utilização de tecnologia na lavoura, que possibilite a colheita mecanizada, sendo imprescindível à definição do ideotipo da cultura. Neste sentido, objetivou-se estudar a herança dos caracteres relacionados à arquitetura da planta, comprimento e número de nós do ramo principal. Avaliou-se as linhagens parentais de feijão-caupi e as populações F1's, F2's e RC's dos cruzamentos TE96-282-22G (P1) x TVX-5058-09C (P2) e TE96-282-22G (P1) x IT81D-1332 (P3), na Embrapa Meio-Norte, em Teresina, PI, no delineamento em blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições. Foram estimadas as variâncias fenotípica, genotípica, aditiva, devido à dominância e ambiental; herdabilidades no sentido amplo e restrito; número de genes e grau médio de dominância. O modelo reduzido, aditivo-dominante, explica a variação observada no comprimento e número de nós do ramo principal. Os componentes de maior relevância no controle dos caracteres foram a média e o efeito aditivo. Em programas de melhoramento, o comprimento e o número de nós do ramo principal devem ser considerados na seleção para aumento de produtividade

The Kardar-Parisi-Zhang exponents for the 2+12+1 dimensions

The Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation has been connected to a large number of important stochastic processes in physics, chemistry and growth phenomena, ranging from classical to quantum physics. The central quest in this field is the search for ever more precise universal growth exponents. Notably, exact growth exponents are only known for $1+1$ dimensions. In this work, we present physical and geometric analytical methods that directly associate these exponents to the fractal dimension of the rough interface. Based on this, we determine the growth exponents for the $2+1$ dimensions, which are in agreement with the results of thin films experiments and precise simulations. We also make a first step towards a solution in $d+1$ dimensions, where our results suggest the inexistence of an upper critical dimension

Caracterização morfo-agronômica de cultivares locais de feijão-caupi do grupo Canapu.

O feijão-caupi [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.] é uma leguminosa utilizada como alimento básico pelas populações rurais e urbanas. Nos últimos anos, a pesquisa tem evoluído, principalmente na seleção e/ou obtenção de cultivares adaptadas para cada tipo de ambiente e sistema de produção, com características de grão e vagem que atendam as exigências de comerciantes e consumidores. Assim, objetivou-se realizar a caracterização fenológica e agronômica de cultivares locais de feijão-caupi, do grupo Canapu. O ensaio foi conduzido em Teresina, Piauí, utilizando-se o delineamento de blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições, sendo semeado em julho de 2003. Avaliou-se: tipo de porte, início de floração, comprimento e número de nós no ramo principal, número de ramos laterais, cor da flor, comprimento, largura e espessura da vagem, número de grãos/vagem; peso de 100 grãos e rendimento de grãos. Os genótipos de feijão-caupi apresentaram pouca variabilidade genética para maioria dos caracteres analisados. Linhagens com elevados índices de grãos podem ser selecionadas através do comprimento e do número de nós dos ramos principal e laterais. Para o número de dias para o florescimento, comprimento e número de nós do ramo principal e peso de 100 sementes existe variabilidade suficiente para seleção de genótipos superiores

Tuning in magnetic modes in Tb(Co_{x}Ni_{1-x})_{2}B_{2}C: from longitudinal spin-density waves to simple ferromagnetism

Neutron diffraction and thermodynamics techniques were used to probe the evolution of the magnetic properties of Tb(Co_{x}Ni_{1-x})_{2}B_{2}C. A succession of magnetic modes was observed as x is varied: the longitudinal modulated k=(0.55,0,0) state at x=0 is transformed into a collinear k=([nicefrac]\nicefrac{1}{2},0,[nicefrac]\nicefrac{1}{2}) antiferromagnetic state at x= 0.2, 0.4; then into a transverse c-axis modulated k=(0,0,[nicefrac]\nicefrac{1}{3}) mode at x= 0.6, and finally into a simple ferromagnetic structure at x= 0.8 and 1. Concomitantly, the low-temperature orthorhombic distortion of the tetragonal unit cell at x=0 is reduced smoothly such that for x >= 0.4 only a tetragonal unit cell is manifested. Though predicted theoretically earlier, this is the first observation of the k=(0,0,[nicefrac]\nicefrac{1}{3}) mode in borocarbides; our findings of a succession of magnetic modes upon increasing x also find support from a recently proposed theoretical model. The implication of these findings and their interpretation on the magnetic structure of the RM_{2}B_{2}C series are also discussed
