    Tagging b-jets in ATLAS

    Get PDF
The ability to identify jets containing b-hadrons is important for the high-pT physics program of a general-purpose experiment at the LHC such as ATLAS. This is in particular useful to select very pure top samples, to search and/or study Standard Model or supersymmetric Higgs bosons which couple preferably to heavy objects or are produced in association with heavy quarks, to veto the large dominant ttbar background for several physics channels and finally to search for new physics: SUSY decay chains, heavy gauge bosons, etc. After a review of the algorithms used to identify b-jets, their anticipated performance is discussed as well as the impact of various critical ingredients such as the residual misalignments in the tracker. The prospects to measure the b-tagging performance in the first few hundreds pb-1 of data with di-jet events and ttbar events are then discussed. Finally three different use cases are discussed: the top mass measurement, the search for a low-mass Higgs boson produced in ssociation with a top quark pair and decaying to bbbar, and the specific challenges of tagging very high-pT (TeV) jets for exotics search

Colorblind love and Black love on purpose: Black feminist thought, casting, and the invisibility/visibility of Black womanhood on television

2018 Spring.Includes bibliographical references. This thesis interrogates the representations of Black womanhood on television by investigating the production context and text of two contemporary television shows. Both case studies reveal the importance of quality on screen representations and the relationship between production practices and understandings of intersectionality, stereotypes, and cultural specificity. I argue Being Mary Jane's industrial discourse and text intentionally offer a complex image of a Black woman's life while the industrial context surrounding Rachel's journey on The Bachelorette undermines Black female visibility through a colorblind discourse that dismisses Rachel's position and experience as a Black woman. These case studies demonstrate how off screen discourses contribute to representation on screen and create narratives that can exclude or include cultural specificity and racial complexity. Such narratives resonate throughout popular and political discourses with the potential to empower marginalized voices or expose the mechanisms that strive to silence them and reify white supremacy

Using building and bridge information for adapting roads to ALS data by means of network snakes

    Get PDF
In the German Authoritative Topographic Cartographic Information System (ATKIS), the 2D positions and the heights of objects such as roads are stored separately in the digital landscape model (DLM) and digital terrain model (DTM), which is often acquired by airborne laser scanning (ALS). However, an increasing number of applications require a combined processing and visualization of these two data sets. Due to different kinds of acquisition, processing, and modelling discrepancies exist between the DTM and DLM and thus a simple integration may lead to semantically incorrect 3D objects. For example, roads may be situated on strongly tilted DTM parts and rivers sometimes flow uphill. In this paper we propose an algorithm for the adaptation of 2D road centrelines to ALS data by means of network snakes. Generally, the image energy for the snakes is defined based on ALS intensity and height information and derived products. Additionally, buildings and bridges as strong features in height data are exploited in order to support the road adaptation process. Extracted buildings as priors modified by a distance transform are used to create a force of repulsion for the road vectors integrated in the image energy. In contrast, bridges give strong evidence for the correct road position in the height data. Therefore, the image energy is adapted for the bridge points. For that purpose bridge detection in the DTM is performed starting from an approximate position using template matching. Examples are given which apply the concept of network-snakes with new image energy for the adaptation of road networks to ALS data taking advantage of the prior known topology

Tea Tree Oil Acne Treatments on Pinterest: Will It Save Your Face?

    Get PDF
Background: The power of social media has defined many aspects of modern society and provides easy access to healthcare information. Specifically, Pinterest with more than 320 million monthly users provides a platform to share both product examples and homemade remedies. Acne affects between 40 to 50 million people in the U.S. causing physical irritation and emotional distress. Essential oils, especially tea tree oil, have shown antibacterial properties in acne treatment but proper application and use is critical. Purpose: In this study, the portrayal of tea tree oil as an acne treatment on Pinterest and its efficacy as a topical acne treatment was analyzed. Methods: Using the search term tea tree oil acne treatment, samples were taken from every five pins to collect 250 pins for our final sample. From the data collected a code book was formed which was then pilot tested. A final codebook was developed which was used by 1 primary coder and two sub coders. Results: Of the 250 pins sampled, the overall portrayal was mostly (66%) positive, while the other 34% of pins were “not apparent”. The percentage of commercial products was 30% , while homemade products was 40%. The most common severity of acne claimed to treat was severe acne, while none claimed to treat moderate acne. Surprisingly, only 20% of the sample recommended the use of additional ingredients. Additionally, 23% of the pins had other health claims. Conclusions: With social media altering the way health information is portrayed, it is important to identify the difference between scientifically-proven and misleading information
