Three-dimensional Imaging of Microstructure in Gold Nanocrystals
X-ray diffraction using a coherent beam involves the mutual interference among all the extremities of small crystals. The continuous diffraction pattern so produced can be phased because it can be oversampled. We have thus obtained three-dimensional images of the interiors of Au nanocrystals that show 50 nm wide bands of contrast with f111g orientation that probably arise from internal twinning by dynamic recrystallization during their formation at high temperature

Inverse problems arise frequently in physics: The magnitude of the Fourier transform of some function is measurable, but not its phase. The “phase problem” in crystallography arises because the number of discrete measurements (Bragg peak intensities) is only half the number of unknowns (electron density points in space). Sayre first proposed that oversampling of diffraction data should allow a solution, and this has recently been demonstrated. An innovative approach to encouraging spiral learning for 3rd year undergraduates
A series of tutorials was re-designed to further engage students in spiral learning and highlight development of transferable skills. The tutorials focused on self-directed and enquiry based learning, both of which provided particular challenges to students and staff. The students were randomly allocated a media article related to psychology as a focus to their studies and the module was assessed by presentation and report. Students were encouraged to work together to develop ideas and provide peer feedback on drafts of their work. Feedback from students was overall more positive about the module than in previous years, particularly in respect to the extent to which they were helped to develop transferable skill
Sensitivity to the acoustic correlates of lexical stress and their relationship to reading in skilled readers
The role of suprasegmental information in reading processes is a growing area of interest, and sensitivity to lexical stress has been shown to explain unique variance in reading development. However, less is known about its role in skilled reading. This study aimed to investigate the acoustic features of suprasegmental information using a same/different cross-modal matching task. Sixty-four adult participants completed standardized measures of reading accuracy, reading speed, and comprehension and performed an experimental task. The experimental task required the participants to identify whether non-speech acoustic sequences matched the characteristics of written words. The findings indicated differences in responses depending on where the lexical stress was required for the word. Moreover, evidence was found to support the view that amplitude information is part of the word knowledge retrieval process in skilled reading. Brief report: the relationship between writing transcription skills and writing measures differs between children who self-report being monolingual or bilingual
This study explored how the skills involved in writing were associated with written language measures in children who self-reported being bilingual or monolingual. Twenty children were matched for age and gender and took part in a writing task and a series of tasks to measure writing transcription skills. The results found that there was no difference in the writing measures for either group. There was a different pattern of significant associations between the transcription skills and the writing measures for the two groups. The results are discussed in terms of the different ways in which a complex task like writing can be accomplished successfully
Tau-crystallin/alpha-enolase: one gene encodes both an enzyme and a lens structural protein.
tau-Crystallin has been a major component of the cellular lenses of species throughout vertebrate evolution, from lamprey to birds. Immunofluorescence analysis of the embryonic turtle lens, using antiserum to lamprey tau-crystallin showed that the protein is expressed throughout embryogenesis and is present at high concentrations in all parts of the lens. Partial peptide sequence for the isolated turtle protein and deduced sequences for several lamprey peptides all revealed a close similarity to the glycolytic enzyme enolase (E.C. 4.2.1.11). A full-sized cDNA for putative duck tau-crystallin was obtained and sequenced, confirming the close relationship with alpha-enolase. Southern blot analysis showed that the duck genome contains a single alpha-enolase gene, while Northern blot analysis showed that the message for tau-crystallin/alpha-enolase is present in embryonic duck lens at 25 times the abundance found in liver. tau-Crystallin possesses enolase activity, but the activity is greatly reduced, probably because of age-related posttranslational modification. It thus appears that a highly conserved, important glycolytic enzyme has been used as a structural component of lens since the start of vertebrate evolution. Apparently the enzyme has not been recruited for its catalytic activity but for some distinct structural property. tau-Crystallin/alpha-enolase is an example of a multifunctional protein playing two very different roles in evolution but encoded by a single gene
Delay or deficit? Spelling processes in children with specific language impairment
Few studies have explored the phonological, morphological and orthographic spellings skills of children with specific language impairment (SLI) simultaneously. Fifteen children with SLI (mean age = 113.07 months, SD = 8.61) completed language and spelling tasks alongside chronological-age controls and spelling-age controls. While the children with SLI showed a deficit in phonological spelling, they performed comparably to spelling-age controls on morphological spelling skills, and there were no differences between the three groups in producing orthographically legal spellings. The results also highlighted the potential importance of adequate non-word repetition skills in relation to effective spelling skills, and demonstrated that not all children with spoken language impairments show marked spelling difficulties. Findings are discussed in relation to theory, educational assessment and practice
Pseudopotential for the electron-electron interaction
We propose a pseudopotential for the electron-electron Coulomb interaction to
improve the efficiency of many-body electronic structure calculations. The
pseudopotential accurately replicates the scattering properties of the Coulomb
interaction, and recovers the analytical solution for two electrons in a
parabolic trap. A case study for the homogeneous electron gas using the
diffusion Monte Carlo and configuration interaction methods recovers highly
accurate values for the ground state energy, and the smoother potential reduces
the computational cost by a factor of ~30. Finally, we demonstrate the use of

An evaluation of seasonal variations in footwear worn by adults with inflammatory arthritis: a cross-sectional observational study using a web-based survey
Background: Foot problems are common in adults with inflammatory arthritis and therapeutic footwear can be
effective in managing arthritic foot problems. Accessing appropriate footwear has been identified as a major barrier,
resulting in poor adherence to treatment plans involving footwear. Indeed, previous New Zealand based studies
found that many people with rheumatoid arthritis and gout wore inappropriate footwear. However, these studies
were conducted in a single teaching hospital during the New Zealand summer therefore the findings may not be
representative of footwear styles worn elsewhere in New Zealand, or reflect the potential influence of seasonal
climate changes. The aim of the study was to evaluate seasonal variations in footwear habits of people with
inflammatory arthritic conditions in New Zealand.
Methods: A cross-sectional study design using a web-based survey. The survey questions were designed to elicit
demographic and clinical information, features of importance when choosing footwear and seasonal footwear
habits, including questions related to the provision of therapeutic footwear/orthoses and footwear experiences.
Results: One-hundred and ninety-seven participants responded who were predominantly women of European
descent, aged between 46–65 years old, from the North Island of New Zealand. The majority of participants
identified with having either rheumatoid arthritis (35%) and/or osteoarthritis (57%) and 68% reported established
disease (>5 years duration). 18% of participants had been issued with therapeutic footwear. Walking and athletic
shoes were the most frequently reported footwear type worn regardless of the time of year. In the summer,
42% reported wearing sandals most often. Comfort, fit and support were reported most frequently as the footwear
features of greatest importance. Many participants reported difficulties with footwear (63%), getting hot feet in the
summer (63%) and the need for a sandal which could accommodate a supportive insole (73%).
Conclusions: Athletic and walking shoes were the most popular style of footwear reported regardless of seasonal
variation. During the summer season people with inflammatory arthritis may wear sandals more frequently in
order to accommodate disease-related foot deformity. Healthcare professionals and researchers should consider
seasonal variation when recommending appropriate footwear, or conducting footwear studies in people with
inflammatory arthritis, to reduce non-adherence to prescribed footwear
