Resourcing resilience: Social protection for HIV prevention amongst children and adolescents in Eastern and Southern Africa
Adolescents are the only age group with growing AIDS-related morbidity and mortality in Eastern and Southern
Africa, making HIV prevention research among this population an urgent priority. Structural deprivations are key
drivers of adolescent HIV infection in this region. Biomedical interventions must be combined with behavioural
and social interventions to alleviate the socio-structural determinants of HIV infection. There is growing evidence
that social protection has the potential to reduce the risk of HIV infection among children and adolescents.
This research combined expert consultations with a rigorous review of academic and policy literature on the
effectiveness of social protection for HIV prevention among children and adolescents, including prevention for
those already HIV-positive. The study had three goals: (i) assess the evidence on the effectiveness of social
protection for HIV prevention, (ii) consider key challenges to implementing social protection programmes
that promote HIV prevention, and (iii) identify critical research gaps in social protection and HIV prevention, in
Eastern and Southern Africa. Causal pathways of inequality, poverty, gender and HIV risk require flexible and
responsive social protection mechanisms. Results confirmed that HIV-inclusive child- and adolescent-sensitive
social protection has the potential to interrupt risk pathways to HIV infection and foster resilience. In particular,
empirical evidence (literature and expert feedback) detailed the effectiveness of combination social protection
particularly cash/in-kind components combined with “care” and “capability” among children and adolescents.
Social protection programmes should be dynamic and flexible, and consider age, gender, HIV-related stigma, and
context, including cultural norms, which offer opportunities to improve programmatic coverage, reach and uptake.
Effective HIV prevention also requires integrated social protection policies, developed through strong national
government ownership and leadership. Future research should explore which combinations of social protection
work for sub-groups of children and adolescents, particularly those living with HIV
Towards an end-to-end analysis and prediction system for weather, climate, and Marine applications in the Red Sea
AbstractThe Red Sea, home to the second-longest coral reef system in the world, is a vital resource for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The Red Sea provides 90% of the Kingdom’s potable water by desalinization, supporting tourism, shipping, aquaculture, and fishing industries, which together contribute about 10%–20% of the country’s GDP. All these activities, and those elsewhere in the Red Sea region, critically depend on oceanic and atmospheric conditions. At a time of mega-development projects along the Red Sea coast, and global warming, authorities are working on optimizing the harnessing of environmental resources, including renewable energy and rainwater harvesting. All these require high-resolution weather and climate information. Toward this end, we have undertaken a multipronged research and development activity in which we are developing an integrated data-driven regional coupled modeling system. The telescopically nested components include 5-km- to 600-m-resolution atmospheric models to address weather and climate challenges, 4-km- to 50-m-resolution ocean models with regional and coastal configurations to simulate and predict the general and mesoscale circulation, 4-km- to 100-m-resolution ecosystem models to simulate the biogeochemistry, and 1-km- to 50-m-resolution wave models. In addition, a complementary probabilistic transport modeling system predicts dispersion of contaminant plumes, oil spill, and marine ecosystem connectivity. Advanced ensemble data assimilation capabilities have also been implemented for accurate forecasting. Resulting achievements include significant advancement in our understanding of the regional circulation and its connection to the global climate, development, and validation of long-term Red Sea regional atmospheric–oceanic–wave reanalyses and forecasting capacities. These products are being extensively used by academia, government, and industry in various weather and marine studies and operations, environmental policies, renewable energy applications, impact assessment, flood forecasting, and more.</jats:p

Understanding 2016: China, Brexit and Trump in the history of uneven and combined development
This article uses the theory of uneven and combined development (U&CD) to produce a novel explanation of ‘Brexit and Trump’ – the two shock political events of 2016. The argument proceeds in three steps. First, we identify the global conjuncture of historical unevenness in which the votes occurred: how the neoliberal transformation of the advanced capitalist countries was synchronized with the radically different process of primitive accumulation in China. Second, we apply the theory of U&CD to this peculiar ‘simultaneity of the non‐simultaneous’: the ‘big country’ effects of China's industrialization, we find, were thrice multiplied by its combination with the advanced sectors of the world economy, which accelerated China's take‐off, brought forward its export phase, and widened its export profile at a moment of maximum openness in international trade. Finally, this produced the pattern of development that led to the events of 2016: the resultant trade shocks intensified the internal inequalities of British and American societies in ways that match the geography of the Leave and Trump votes. The analysis has a wider intellectual implication too, for the phenomena of historical unevenness and combination are intrinsic to the history of the global political economy; and the theory of U&CD therefore has a unique contribution to make to the field of International Political Economy

Comprehensive report: a research framework on gender and socio-cultural inclusion in global change research
Commissioned by the South African National Research Foundation (NRF), MayThis Report is the product of a project attempting to design a framework which would better enable the mainstreaming of gender and socio-cultural components in research on any global change phenomenon. It is our hope that this is only the beginning of a much bigger project and we are currently working to secure further funding to make this vision a reality. This Comprehensive Report builds on the Preliminary Report: The Development of a Research Framework on Gender and Socio-Cultural Inclusion in Global Change Research which was an accumulation of ideas garnered from the Research Reference Group Meeting which took place in August 2014 (p. 6). This early report focused on the initial development of the conceptual outline and framework for this project. It included an introduction to the lack of gendered consideration in global change research an explanation of the presentations made at the Research Reference Group Meeting, as well as the first designs of the framework and why we envisioned particular concepts to be of significance in any global change research seeking to better mainstream sociocultural matters
