The Strategic Realignment of Paradoxical Family and Business Goals in Family Business:A Rhetorical History Perspective
Family firms are paradoxical by nature due to the interplay of two distinct goal systems: the family and the firm. These systems involve nested tensions that can create apparent paradoxes over time. Taking a rhetorical history lens, we explore how family firms can dynamically produce temporal equilibria between goal systems through the strategic use of history. Empirically, we investigate the emergence and development of two apparent paradoxes unfolding through the history of the growth of Alpha, an Italian family firm in the packaging industry. Our findings suggest that rhetorical history can alleviate the tensions emergent from the paradoxical goal systems of family businesses. Our research provides a unique contribution by revealing the emergence and agentic process of the co-construction of rhetorical history, which involves multiple agencies from both family and non-family employees. Moreover, such co-created rhetorical history can dynamically produce temporal equilibria in family business’s persistent paradoxical goal systems.

Internet-based psychoeducation for bipolar disorder: a qualitative analysis of feasibility, acceptability and impact
<p>Background: In a recent exploratory randomised trial we found that a novel, internet-based psychoeducation programme for bipolar disorder (Beating Bipolar) was relatively easy to deliver and had a modest effect on psychological quality of life. We sought to explore the experiences of participants with respect to feasibility, acceptability and impact of Beating Bipolar.</p>
<p>Methods: Participants were invited to take part in a semi-structured interview. Thematic analysis techniques were employed; to explore and describe participants’ experiences, the data were analysed for emerging themes which were identified and coded.</p>
<p>Results: The programme was feasible to deliver and acceptable to participants where they felt comfortable using a computer. It was found to impact upon insight into illness, health behaviour, personal routines and positive attitudes towards medication. Many participants regarded the programme as likely to be most beneficial for those recently diagnosed.</p>
<p>Conclusions: An online psychoeducation package for bipolar disorder, such as Beating Bipolar, is feasible and acceptable to patients, has a positive impact on self-management behaviours and may be particularly suited to early intervention. Alternative (non-internet) formats should also be made available to patients.</p>
Dipole source analysis of auditory P300 response in depressive and anxiety disorders
This paper is to study auditory event-related potential P300 in patients with anxiety and depressive disorders using dipole source analysis. Auditory P300 using 2-stimulus oddball paradigm was collected from 35 patients with anxiety disorder, 32 patients with depressive disorder, and 30 healthy controls. P300 dipole sources and peak amplitude of dipole activities were analyzed. The source analysis resulted in a 4-dipole configuration, where temporal dipoles displayed greater P300 amplitude than that of frontal dipoles. In addition, a right-greater-than-left hemispheric asymmetry of dipole magnitude was found in patients with anxiety disorder, whereas a left-greater-than-right hemispheric asymmetry of dipole magnitude was observed in depressed patients. Results indicated that the asymmetry was more prominent over the temporal dipole than that of frontal dipoles in patients. Patients with anxiety disorder may increase their efforts to enhance temporal dipole activity to compensate for a deficit in frontal cortex processing, while depressed patients show dominating reduction of right temporal activity. The opposite nature of results observed with hemispheric asymmetry in depressive and anxiety disorders could serve to be valuable information for psychiatric studies
Thermally driven spin injection from a ferromagnet into a non-magnetic metal
Creating, manipulating and detecting spin polarized carriers are the key
elements of spin based electronics. Most practical devices use a perpendicular
geometry in which the spin currents, describing the transport of spin angular
momentum, are accompanied by charge currents. In recent years, new sources of
pure spin currents, i.e., without charge currents, have been demonstrated and
applied. In this paper, we demonstrate a conceptually new source of pure spin
current driven by the flow of heat across a ferromagnetic/non-magnetic metal
(FM/NM) interface. This spin current is generated because the Seebeck
coefficient, which describes the generation of a voltage as a result of a
temperature gradient, is spin dependent in a ferromagnet. For a detailed study
of this new source of spins, it is measured in a non-local lateral geometry. We
developed a 3D model that describes the heat, charge and spin transport in this
geometry which allows us to quantify this process. We obtain a spin Seebeck
coefficient for Permalloy of -3.8 microvolt/Kelvin demonstrating that thermally
driven spin injection is a feasible alternative for electrical spin injection
in, for example, spin transfer torque experiments
Tunable Emergent Heterostructures in a Prototypical Correlated Metal
At the interface between two distinct materials desirable properties, such as
superconductivity, can be greatly enhanced, or entirely new functionalities may
emerge. Similar to in artificially engineered heterostructures, clean
functional interfaces alternatively exist in electronically textured bulk
materials. Electronic textures emerge spontaneously due to competing
atomic-scale interactions, the control of which, would enable a top-down
approach for designing tunable intrinsic heterostructures. This is particularly
attractive for correlated electron materials, where spontaneous
heterostructures strongly affect the interplay between charge and spin degrees
of freedom. Here we report high-resolution neutron spectroscopy on the
prototypical strongly-correlated metal CeRhIn5, revealing competition between
magnetic frustration and easy-axis anisotropy -- a well-established mechanism
for generating spontaneous superstructures. Because the observed easy-axis
anisotropy is field-induced and anomalously large, it can be controlled
efficiently with small magnetic fields. The resulting field-controlled magnetic
superstructure is closely tied to the formation of superconducting and
electronic nematic textures in CeRhIn5, suggesting that in-situ tunable
heterostructures can be realized in correlated electron materials
