Modeled El Niño-Southern Oscillation Effects on Grain Sorghum under Varying Irrigation Strategies and Cultural Practices
Equatorial sea surface temperatures vary systematically to cause the El Niño southern oscillation (ENSO) that produces predictable weather patterns in North America and may permit longrange climate predictions and eventual proactive summer crop irrigation management. The declining Ogallala Aquifer in the Southern High Plains and consequently limited well capacities challenge producers to adapt cropping practices for irrigation that doesn’t meet crop water demand. Our objective was to evaluate sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] yield response to ENSO climate-informed management of cultural practices and irrigation strategies on a Pullman soil (fine, mixed, superactive, thermic Torrertic Paleustoll). We used the simulation model SORKAM and long-term (1961–2000) weather records from Bushland, TX, classified by ENSO phase to calculate sorghum grain yields for all combinations of irrigation levels (0.0, 2.5, 3.75, or 5.0 mm d–1), planting day of year (DOY = 135, 156, 176), and cultivar maturity (early, 95 d; medium, 105 d; late, 120 d). Using the September–November Oceanic Niño Index (ONI) to identify ENSO phase, La Niña years had 50 mm less precipitation and a corresponding 14.5% reduction in overall yield to 4550 kg ha–1 for sorghum planted at 16 plants m–2 population. Late maturing cultivars and late planting led to sorghum freeze injury and reduced yields regardless of ENSO phase. While yields consistently increased with irrigation, we conclude that concentrating water to irrigate an area partitioned 2:1 or 1:1 at 3.75- or 5.0-mm d–1 with complementary dryland produced \u3e30% more grain, overall, than uniformly irrigating an area at 2.5 mm d–1
Uniqueness Theorem for Generalized Maxwell Electric and Magnetic Black Holes in Higher Dimensions
Based on the conformal energy theorem we prove the uniqueness theorem for
static higher dimensional electrically and magnetically charged black holes
being the solution of Einstein (n-2)-gauge forms equations of motion. Black
hole spacetime contains an asymptotically flat spacelike hypersurface with
compact interior and non-degenerate components of the event horizon.Comment: 7 pages, RevTex, to be published in Phys.Rev.D1
Influence of a Brane Tension on Phantom and Massive Scalar Field Emission
We elaborate the signature of the extra dimensions and brane tension in the
process of phantom and massive scalar emission in the spacetime of
(4+n)-dimensional tense brane black hole. Absorption cross section, luminosity
of Hawking radiation and cross section in the low-energy approximation were
found. We envisage that parameter connected with the existence of a brane
imprints its role in the Hawking radiation of the considered fields.Comment: 7 pages, * figures, RevTex, to be published in General Relativity and

Asymptotic Expansions for Stationary Distributions of Perturbed Semi-Markov Processes
New algorithms for computing of asymptotic expansions for stationary
distributions of nonlinearly perturbed semi-Markov processes are presented. The
algorithms are based on special techniques of sequential phase space reduction,
which can be applied to processes with asymptotically coupled and uncoupled
finite phase spaces.Comment: 83 page
Observation of the Ankle and Evidence for a High-Energy Break in the Cosmic Ray Spectrum
We have measured the cosmic ray spectrum at energies above eV using
the two air fluorescence detectors of the High Resolution Fly's Eye experiment
operating in monocular mode. We describe the detector, PMT and atmospheric
calibrations, and the analysis techniques for the two detectors. We fit the
spectrum to models describing galactic and extragalactic sources. Our measured
spectrum gives an observation of a feature known as the ``ankle'' near eV, and strong evidence for a suppression near eV.Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures. To appear in Physics Letters B. Accepted versio
The PHENIX Experiment at RHIC
The physics emphases of the PHENIX collaboration and the design and current
status of the PHENIX detector are discussed. The plan of the collaboration for

RHIC operation is also presented.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure. Further details of the PHENIX physics program

Some remarks on the angular momenta of galaxies, their clusters and superclusters
We discuss the relation between angular momenta and masses of galaxy
structures base on the Li model of the universe with global rotation. In our
previous paper (God{\l}owski et al 2002) it was shown that the model predicts
the presence of a minimum in this relation. In the present paper we discuss
observational evidence allowing us to verify this relation. We find null
angular momentum J=0 for the masses corresponding to mass of galaxy grups and
non-vanishing angular momenta for other galactic structures. We check these
theoretical predictions analysing Tully's galaxy grups. The existing data
comparing alignment in different galactic structure are consistent with
obtained theoretical relation if we interpret the groving alignment as
the galactic increasing angular momenta in the galactic structure.Comment: 20 pages 1 figure. GRG accepte
Dynamics of the Universe with global rotation
We analyze dynamics of the FRW models with global rotation in terms of
dynamical system methods. We reduce dynamics of these models to the FRW models
with some fictitious fluid which scales like radiation matter. This fluid
mimics dynamically effects of global rotation. The significance of the global
rotation of the Universe for the resolution of the acceleration and horizon
problems in cosmology is investigated. It is found that dynamics of the
Universe can be reduced to the two-dimensional Hamiltonian dynamical system.
Then the construction of the Hamiltonian allows for full classification of
evolution paths. On the phase portraits we find the domains of cosmic
acceleration for the globally rotating universe as well as the trajectories for
which the horizon problem is solved. We show that the FRW models with global
rotation are structurally stable. This proves that the universe acceleration is
due to the global rotation. It is also shown how global rotation gives a
natural explanation of the empirical relation between angular momentum for
clusters and superclusters of galaxies. The relation is obtained
as a consequence of self similarity invariance of the dynamics of the FRW model
with global rotation. In derivation of this relation we use the Lie group of
symmetry analysis of differential equation.Comment: Revtex4, 22 pages, 5 figure
A Likelihood Method for Measuring the Ultrahigh Energy Cosmic Ray Composition
Air fluorescence detectors traditionally determine the dominant chemical
composit ion of the ultrahigh energy cosmic ray flux by comparing the averaged
slant depth of the shower maximum, , as a function of energy to the
slant depths expect ed for various hypothesized primaries. In this paper, we
present a method to make a direct measurement of the expected mean number of
protons and iron by comparing the shap es of the expected
distributions to the distribution for data. The advantages of this method
includes the use of information of the full distribution and its ability to
calculate a flux for various cosmic ray compositi ons. The same method can be
expanded to marginalize uncertainties due to choice of spectra, hadronic models
and atmospheric parameters. We demonstrate the technique with independent
simulated data samples from a parent sample of protons and iron. We accurately
predict the number of protons and iron in the parent sample and show that the
uncertainties are meaningful.Comment: 11 figures, 22 pages, accepted by Astroparticle Physic
Alternative Methods to Finding Patterns in HiRes Stereo Data
In this paper Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays UHECRs data observed by the HiRes
fluorescence detector in stereo mode is analyzed to search for events in the
sky with an arrival direction lying on a great circle. Such structure is known
as the arc structure. The arc structure is expected when the charged cosmic
rays pass through the galactic magnetic field. The arcs searched for could
represent a broad or a small scale anisotropy depending on the proposed source
model for the UHECRs. The Arcs in this paper are looked for using Hough
transform were Hough transform is a technique used to looking for patterns in
images. No statistically significant arcs were found in this study
