Admissibility and Common Knowledge
The implications of assuming that it is commonly known that players consider only admissible best responses are investigated.Within a states-of-the-world model where a state, for each player, determines a strategy set rather than a strategy the concept of fully permissible sets is defined.General existence is established, and a finite algorithm (eliminating strategy sets instead of strategies) is provided.The concept refines rationalizability as well as the Dekel-Fudenberg procedure, and captures a notion of forward induction.When players consider all best responses, the same framework can be used to define the concept of rationalizable sets, which characterizes rationalizability.game theory
Effect of the shot-noise on a Coulomb blockaded single Josephson junction
We have investigated how the Coulomb blockade of a mesoscopic Josephson
junction in a high-impedance environment is suppressed by shot noise from an
adjacent junction. The presented theoretical analysis is an extension of the
phase correlation theory for the case of a non-Gaussian noise. Asymmetry of the
non-Gaussian noise should result in the shift of the conductance minimum from
zero voltage and the ratchet effect (nonzero current at zero voltage), which
have been experimentally observed. The analysis demonstrates that a Coulomb
blockaded tunnel junction in a high impedance environment can be used as an

A Service Component-based Accounting and Charging Architecture to Support Interim Mechanisms across Multiple Domains
Today, telematics services are often compositions of different chargeable service components offered by different service providers. To enhance component-based accounting and charging, the service composition information is used to match with the corresponding charging structure of a service session. This enables the sharing of revenues among the service providers, and calculation of the total cost for the end-user. When multiple independent service providers are involved, it is a great challenge to apply interim accounting and charging during a service session in order to minimize financial risks between business partners. Another interesting development is the trend towards outsourcing accounting and charging processes to specialized business partners. This requires a decoupling between provisioning and accounting and charging processes. In this paper, we propose a comprehensive component-based accounting and charging architecture to support service session provisioning across multiple domains. The architecture, modeled in UML, incorporates an interim accounting and charging mechanism to enable the processing and exchange of accounting information needed to update intermediate charges for separate service components and the user's credit, even during the service provisioning phase
Molecular evolution and morphological speciation in North Atlantic brachiopods (Terebratulina spp.)
Morphological and molecular differentiation of western and eastern North Atlantic brachiopods were examined by morphometric analysis of six shell characteristics (<i>n</i>= 144), allozyme electrophoresis at six nuclear gene loci (<i>n</i>= 485), and estimation of nucleotide difference by digestion of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) with nine restriction endonucleases (<i>n</i>= 96)
An LED pulser for measuring photomultiplier linearity
A light-emitting diode (LED) pulser for testing the low-rate response of a
photomultiplier tube (PMT) to scintillator-like pulses has been designed,
developed, and implemented. This pulser is intended to simulate 80 ns full
width at half maximum photon pulses over the dynamic range of the PMT, in order
to precisely determine PMT linearity. This particular design has the advantage
that, unlike many LED test rigs, it does not require the use of multiple
calibrated LEDs, making it insensitive to LED gain drifts. Instead, a
finite-difference measurement is made using two LEDs which need not be
calibrated with respect to one another. These measurements give a better than
1% mapping of the response function, allowing for the testing and development
of particularly linear PMT bases.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure

On the Possibility of Optical Unification in Heterotic Strings
Recently J. Giedt discussed a mechanism, entitled optical unification,
whereby string scale unification is facilitated via exotic matter with
intermediate scale mass. This mechanism guarantees that a virtual MSSM
unification below the string scale is extrapolated from the running of gauge
couplings upward from M_Z^o when an intermediate scale desert is assumed. In
this letter we explore the possibility of optical unification within the
context of weakly coupled heterotic strings. In particular, we investigate this
for models of free fermionic construction containing the NAHE set of basis
vectors. This class is of particular interest for optical unification, because
it provides a standard hypercharge embedding within SO(10), giving the standard
k_Y = 5/3 hypercharge level, which was shown necessary for optical unification.
We present a NAHE model for which the set of exotic SU(3)_C
triplet/anti-triplet pairs, SU(2)_L doublets, and non-Abelian singlets with
hypercharge offers the possibility of optical unification. Whether this model
can realize optical unification is conditional upon these exotics not receiving
Fayet-Iliopoulos (FI) scale masses when a flat direction of scalar vacuum
expectation values is non-perturbatively chosen to cancel the FI D-term, xi,
generated by the anomalous U(1)-breaking Green-Schwarz-Dine-Seiberg-Wittten
mechanism. A study of perturbative flat directions and their phenomenological
implications for this model is underway.
