Asymptotic Flatness in Rainbow Gravity
A construction of conformal infinity in null and spatial directions is
constructed for the Rainbow-flat space-time corresponding to doubly special
relativity. From this construction a definition of asymptotic DSRness is put
forward which is compatible with the correspondence principle of Rainbow
gravity. Furthermore a result equating asymptotically flat space-times with
asymptotically DSR spacetimes is presented.Comment: 11 page
Distribution of selenium in zebrafish larvae after exposure to organic and inorganic selenium forms
Selenium is an essential micronutrient for many organisms, and in vertebrates has a variety of roles associated with protection from reactive oxygen species. Over the past two decades there have been conflicting reports upon human health benefits and detriments arising from consumption of selenium dietary supplements. Thus, early studies report a decrease in the incidence of certain types of cancer, whereas subsequent studies did not observe any anti-cancer effect, and adverse effects such as increased risks for type 2 diabetes have been reported. A possible contributing factor may be that different chemical forms of selenium were used in different studies. Using larval stage zebrafish (Danio rerio) as a model organism, we report a comparison of the toxicities and tissue selenium distributions of four different chemical forms of selenium. We find that the organic forms of selenium tested (Se-methyl-l-selenocysteine and l-selenomethionine) show considerably more toxicity than inorganic forms (selenite and selenate), and that this appears to be correlated with the level of bioaccumulation. Despite differences in concentrations, the tissue specific pattern of selenium accumulation was similar for the chemical forms tested; selenium was found to be highly concentrated in pigment (melanin) containing tissues especially for the organic selenium treatments, with lower concentrations in eye lens, yolk sac and heart. These results suggest that pigmented tissues might serve as a storage reservoir for selenium. © 2016 The Royal Society of Chemistry
Chiral extrapolation of lattice data for the hyperfine splittings of heavy mesons
Hyperfine splittings between the heavy vector (D*, B*) and pseudoscalar (D,
B) mesons have been calculated numerically in lattice QCD, where the pion mass
(which is related to the light quark mass) is much larger than its physical
value. Naive linear chiral extrapolations of the lattice data to the physical
mass of the pion lead to hyperfine splittings which are smaller than
experimental data. In order to extrapolate these lattice data to the physical
mass of the pion more reasonably, we apply the effective chiral perturbation
theory for heavy mesons, which is invariant under chiral symmetry when the
light quark masses go to zero and heavy quark symmetry when the heavy quark
masses go to infinity. This leads to a phenomenological functional form with
three parameters to extrapolate the lattice data. It is found that the
extrapolated hyperfine splittings are even smaller than those obtained using
linear extrapolation. We conclude that the source of the discrepancy between
lattice data for hyperfine splittings and experiment must lie in non-chiral

Phloem connectivity and transport are not involved in mature plant resistance (MPR) to Potato Virus Y in different potato cultivars, and MPR does not protect tubers from recombinant strains of the virus
This research was funded by UK Research and Innovation (BBSRC Grant # BB/L011840/1; Ecology and Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases), by the Scottish Government's Rural and Environment Science and Analytical Services (RESAS) Division, and by the James Hutton Institute.The aims of this study were: i) to investigate mature plant resistance (MPR) against four strains of Potato virus Y (PVYO, PVYN, PVYNTN and PVYN−Wi) in potato cultivars that differ in maturity (e.g. early or maincrop) at different developmental stages, and ii) to determine whether phloem translocation of photoassimilates at different stages including the source-sink transition influences MPR. The data showed that MPR was functional by the flowering stage in all cultivars, and that the host-pathogen interaction is highly complex, with all three variables (potato cultivar, virus strain and developmental stage of infection) having a significant effect on the outcome. However, virus strain was the most important factor, and MPR was less effective in protecting tubers from recombinant virus strains (PVYNTN and PVYN−Wi). Development of MPR was unrelated to foliar phloem connectivity, which was observed at all developmental stages, but a switch from symplastic to apoplastic phloem unloading early in tuber development may be involved in the prevention of tuber infections with PVYO. Recombinant virus strains were more infectious than parental strains and PVYNTN has a more effective silencing suppressor than PVYO, another factor that may contribute to the efficiency of MPR. The resistance conferred by MPR against PVYO or PVYN may be associated with or enhanced by the presence of the corresponding strain-specific HR resistance gene in the cultivar.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
Design and rationale of the tobacco, exercise and diet messages (TEXT ME) trial of a text message-based intervention for ongoing prevention of cardiovascular disease in people with coronary disease: a randomised controlled trial protocol
Abstract Background Although supporting lifestyle change is an effective way of preventing further events in people with cardiovascular disease, providing access to such interventions is a major challenge. This study aims to investigate whether simple reminders about behaviour change sent via mobile phone text message decrease cardiovascular risk. Methods and analysis Randomised controlled trial with 6 months of follow-up to evaluate the feasibility, acceptability and effect on cardiovascular risk of repeated lifestyle reminders sent via mobile phone text messages compared to usual care. A total of 720 patients with coronary artery disease will be randomised to either standard care or the TEXT ME intervention. The intervention group will receive multiple weekly text messages that provide information, motivation, support to quit smoking (if relevant) and recommendations for healthy diets and exercise. The primary end point is a change in plasma low-density lipoprotein cholesterol at 6 months. Secondary end points include a change in systolic blood pressure, smoking status, quality of life, medication adherence, waist circumference, physical activity levels, nutritional status and mood at 6 months. Process outcomes related to acceptability and feasibility of TEXT ME will also be collected. Ethics and dissemination Primary ethics approval was received from Western Sydney Local Health Network Human Research Ethics Committee—Westmead. Results will be disseminated via the usual scientific forums including peer-reviewed publications and presentations at international conferences. Motivational Interviewing Post-Stroke: An Analysis of Stroke Survivors' Concerns and Adjustment
Our earlier research demonstrated that participation in four sessions of motivational interviewing (MI) early post-stroke has a positive impact on stroke survivors' mood. However, the theoretical underpinnings of MI in supporting adjustment (rather than its traditional use in supporting behavior change) require clarification. This article describes a content analysis of MI transcripts for 10 participants in our previous study, to identify the focus of discussions (patient "concerns") and potential effective components of our MI approach. Patients' post-stroke concerns were shown in 16 categories, including frustration, family impact, and getting well. There was a pattern of change discourse across sessions: "Sustain talk" (reasons for not changing) reduced from Session 1 onward, "change talk" (intent to change) increased then reduced, and "change expressed" (changes achieved) increased from Sessions 1 to 4. MI facilitates healthy adjustment post-stroke in some patients, in turn affecting mood, but clarification of how this effect is achieved requires further exploration
Chiral extrapolation of lattice moments of proton quark distributions
We present the resolution of a long-standing discrepancy between the moments
of parton distributions calculated from lattice QCD and their experimental
values. We propose a simple extrapolation formula for the moments of the
nonsinglet quark distribution u-d, as a function of quark mass, which embodies
the general constraints imposed by the chiral symmetry of QCD. The inclusion of
the leading nonanalytic behavior leads to an excellent description of both the

Generalized Flux Vacua
We consider type II string theory compactified on a symmetric T^6/Z_2
orientifold. We study a general class of discrete deformations of the resulting
four-dimensional supergravity theory, including gaugings arising from geometric
and "nongeometric'' fluxes, as well as the usual R-R and NS-NS fluxes. Solving
the equations of motion associated with the resulting N = 1 superpotential, we
find parametrically controllable infinite families of supersymmetric vacua with
all moduli stabilized. We also describe some aspects of the distribution of
generic solutions to the SUSY equations of motion for this model, and note in
particular the existence of an apparently infinite number of solutions in a
