    Genomics and epidemiology for gastric adenocarcinomas (GE4GAC): a Brazilian initiative to study gastric cancer

    Abstract Gastric cancer (GC) is the fifth most common type of cancer worldwide with high incidences in Asia, Central, and South American countries. This patchy distribution means that GC studies are neglected by large research centers from developed countries. The need for further understanding of this complex disease, including the local importance of epidemiological factors and the rich ancestral admixture found in Brazil, stimulated the implementation of the GE4GAC project. GE4GAC aims to embrace epidemiological, clinical, molecular and microbiological data from Brazilian controls and patients with malignant and pre-malignant gastric disease. In this letter, we summarize the main goals of the project, including subject and sample accrual and current findings

    Antithrombotic effect of indobufen in an experimental model of arterio-arterial microanastomosis in the rat.

    Using an end-to-side microanastomosis of the left common carotid into the right common carotid of rats, implementing a potentially thrombogenic situation, we have investigated the possible antithrombotic effect of indobufen, a new antiplatelet drug. In eight of 15 untreated rats the anastomosis was totally obstructed by a single thrombus growing from the anastomotic wall. Indobufen treatment prevented thrombus formation completely in 14 of 15 rats (p less than 0.02). In treated animals indobufen also produced a statistically significant reduction of ADP-induced platelet aggregation relative to basal values. Platelet count were not influenced by drug treatment.     Low prevalence of post-thrombotic syndrome in patients treated with rivaroxaban

    Post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS) is a complication of deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Residual vein thrombus (RVT) on Doppler Ultrasound can be associated with PTS. Limited data are available on the effect of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) on the long-term outcome of PTS. This study aimed to compare the prevalence of PTS and RVT, in patients with previous DVT treated with rivaroxaban or enoxaparin/warfarin. A total of 129 patients with previous proximal lower limb DVT and treated with rivaroxaban (n = 71) or enoxaparin/warfarin (n = 58) for at least 3 months were included. The Villalta scale for PTS was performed after treatment. The median duration of the DVT symptoms before anticoagulation was 7 days for both groups. The rate of PTS was 50.7% in the patients treated with rivaroxaban and 69% in the enoxaparin/warfarin group. Enoxaparin/warfarin showed an increased prevalence of PTS (P = .018). An analysis in 3 different models showed that the relative risk of PTS decreased by 76% with rivaroxaban use when compared with enoxaparin/warfarin treatment. In addition, 93 of the 129 patients were evaluated regarding the presence of RVT, of which, 11 (24.4%) and 31 (64.6%) presented with RVT for rivaroxaban and enoxaparin/warfarin, respectively (P < .0001). The RVT analysis excluded the possibility of RVT as a mediator of the association between type of treatment and PTS when comparing rivaroxaban with enoxaparin/warfarin (odds ratio (OR) = 0.14; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.1-1.0, P = .051) with rivaroxaban compared with enoxaparin/warfarin.     Stability of tropical forest tree carbon-water relations in a rainfall exclusion treatment through shifts in effective water uptake depth

    Increasing severity and frequency of drought is predicted for large portions of the terrestrial biosphere, with major impacts already documented in wet tropical forests. Using a 4-year rainfall exclusion experiment in the Daintree Rainforest in northeast Australia, we examined canopy tree responses to reduced precipitation and soil water availability by quantifying seasonal changes in plant hydraulic and carbon traits for 11 tree species between control and drought treatments. Even with reduced soil volumetric water content in the upper 1 m of soil in the drought treatment, we found no significant difference between treatments for predawn and midday leaf water potential, photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, foliar stable carbon isotope composition, leaf mass per area, turgor loss point, xylem vessel anatomy, or leaf and stem nonstructural carbohydrates. While empirical measurements of aboveground traits revealed homeostatic maintenance of plant water status and traits in response to reduced soil moisture, modeled belowground dynamics revealed that trees in the drought treatment shifted the depth from which water was acquired to deeper soil layers. These findings reveal that belowground acclimation of tree water uptake depth may buffer tropical rainforests from more severe droughts that may arise in future with climate change
