Trasylol in cases of accidental haemorrhage with coagulation disorder and associated uterine inertia

    Get PDF
Nine cases of severe accidental haemorrhage with coagulation defects are discussed with special reference to uterine inertia. It is suggested that Trasylol may play a specific role in reversing uterine inertia. The mechanism of this is discussed. It is further suggested that heparin may potentiate its activity.S. Afr. Med. Accidental Haemorrhage and Fetal Prognosis

    Get PDF
An analysis is given of some of the factors involved in perinatal mortality associated with accidental haemorrhage. The importance of clinical signs in determining fetal prognosis is discussed. A suggested clinical approach to cases of accidental haemorrhage, where on admission the fetus is found to be alive in utero, is given.S. Afr. Med. J., 48, 764 (1974)

Control of nozzle flow using microjets at supersonic Mach Regime

    Get PDF
This article reports the active control of base flows using the experimental procedure. Active control of base pressure helps in reducing the base drag in aerodynamic devices having suddenly expanded flows. Active control in the form of microjets having 0.5 mm radius placed at forty-five degrees apart is employed to control the base pressure. The Mach numbers of the present analysis are 1.7, 2.3, and 2.7. The length to diameter (L/D) ratio is varied from 10 to 1 and the nozzle pressure ratio (NPR) being changed from 1 to 10 in steps of 1 for base pressure measurements. The area ratio for the entire analysis is fixed at 2.56. Wall pressure distribution along the enlarged duct is also recorded. No change in base pressure increase/decrease is thoroughly analyzed as well. From the experimental investigation, it is found that control plays an important in modifying the base pressure without disturbing the wall pressure distribution. The base pressure variation is entirely different at L/D = 1 compared to a higher L/D ratio due to change in reattachment length and the requirement of the duct length at higher inertia levels. The quality of the flow in the duct in the presence and absence of control remained the same

Production, Collection and Utilization of Very Long-Lived Heavy Charged Leptons

If a fourth generation of leptons exists, both the neutrino and its charged partner must be heavier than 45 GeV. We suppose that the neutrino is the heavier of the two, and that a global or discrete symmetry prohibits intergenerational mixing. In that case, non-renormalizable Planck scale interactions will induce a very small mixing; dimension five interactions will lead to a lifetime for the heavy charged lepton of O(1100)O(1-100) years. Production of such particles is discussed, and it is shown that a few thousands can be produced and collected at a linear collider. The possible uses of these heavy leptons is also briefly discussed.Comment: 9 pages Late

Using the renormalisation group and a conjecture concerning the perturbation series for the effective potential, the leading logarithms in the effective potential are exactly summed for O(N)O(N) scalar and Yukawa theories.Comment: 19 pages, DIAS STP 94-09. Ultrastructural Distribution of the 7 Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptor Subunit in Rat Hippocampus

    Get PDF
Acetylcholine (ACh) is an important neurotransmitter in the mammalian brain; it is implicated in arousal, learning, and other cognitive functions. Recent studies indicate that nicotinic receptors contribute to these cholinergic effects, in addition to the established role of muscarinic receptors. In the hippocampus, where cholinergic involvement in learning and memory is particularly well documented, 7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor subunits (7 nAChRs) are highly expressed, but their precise ultrastructural localization has not been determined. Here, we describe the results of immunogold labeling of serial ultrathin sections through stratum radiatum of area CA1 in the rat. Using both anti-7 nAChR immunolabeling and -bungarotoxin binding, we find that 7 nAChRs are present at nearly all synapses in CA1 stratum radiatum, with immunolabeling present at both presynaptic and postsynaptic elements. Morphological considerations and double immunolabeling indicate that GABAergic as well as glutamatergic synapses bear 7 nAChRs, at densities approaching those observed for glutamate receptors in CA1 stratum radiatum. Postsynaptically, 7 nAChRs often are distributed at dendritic spines in a perisynaptic annulus. In the postsynaptic cytoplasm, immunolabeling is associated with spine apparatus and other membranous structures, suggesting that 7 nAChRs may undergo dynamic regulation, with insertion into the synapse and subsequent internalization. The widespread and substantial expression of 7 nAChRs at synapses in the hippocampus is consistent with an important role in mediating and/or modulating synaptic transmission, plasticity, and neurodegeneration

Fragmentation of very high energy heavy ions

    Get PDF
A stack of CR39 (C12H18O7)n nuclear track detectors with a Cu target was exposed to a 158 A GeV lead ion beam at the CERN-SPS, in order to study the fragmentation properties of lead nuclei. Measurements of the total, break-up and pick-up charge-changing cross sections of ultrarelativistic Pb ions on Cu and CR39 targets are presented and discussed.Comment: 4 pages, 3 EPS figures included with epsf, uses article.sty Talk presented by M.
