    The acute effect of different intensity aerobic and resistance training exercise on the body image in adult women

    The purpose of the study was to evaluate the acute effect of different intensity aerobic (AE) and resistance training (RT) exercises on BI in adult women. Participants were 62 adult women (19.47 ± 2.53 yr., range 18 a 33 yr.), who were randomly assigned to three sessions of either: 1) Control group, 2) Low-intensity AE, 3) High-intensity AE, 4) Low-intensity RT, or 5) High-intensity RT. Before and immediately following each experimental intervention, BI, body weight, and arm and leg circumferences were measured. Three familiarization sessions were performed every 7 days before the AE and RT experimental interventions. Also, 5-RM tests were performed one week before the RT experimental interventions. Data were analyzed using mixed 3-way ANOVA, mixed 4-way ANOVA, and post-hoc analysis. An acute effect of RT on BI was observed, regardless of the exercise intensity, women felt more muscular immediately following the RT session.     The Acute Inflammatory Biomarkers - Are They Cost Effective and Real Time Early Predictors of Mortality in Acute Pneumonia? - A Prospective Observational Study

    Introduction: The CT chest and investigations like IL6 and TNFɑ are the most accurate blood biomarkers of inflammatory changes and can be used to stage the severity and outcome of acute pneumonia. . Getting all the above mentioned investigations in a financially poor patients is not always possible. There are not much studies to look for the association between early raise in serum acute inflammatory bio markers and the prediction of mortality in acute pneumonia. So this study is under taken to know the association between significant raise in serum acute inflammatory biomarkers like hs CRP, LDH, ferritin, NLR, WBCs count in predicting the mortality of acute pneumonia in comparison with the serum IL6,q-SOFA score and CT chest severity score. Materials & Method: All patients underwent standardized workup, including complete blood count, blood biochemistry, ferritin, hs-CRP, LDH,IL6,CT scan of chest ,q-SOFA score assessment and electrocardiogram. All the biochemical investigations were done on day 1 and day 5 of admission to the hospital. The patients were followed-up for the whole in hospital stay duration. Results: All the measured serum acute inflammatory bio markers, IL6, NLR, WBCs count, q-SOFA score and chest CT severity score were significantly elevated in patients with death due to acute pneumonia than the survived ones. [p value-0.01] Conclusion: This study proves that, the early raise in serum acute inflammatory biomarkers have got real and cost effective predictive value and are non-inferior to total WBCs count, NLR,IL6, q- SOFA score and chest CT severity score in assessing the mortality of acute pneumonia.     Quorum quenching activity of lysates from bioluminescent bacteria isolated from selected Philippine marine and freshwater organisms

    Pathogens use cell density dependent gene expression known as Quorum Sensing (QS) to launch virulent factors. Targeting the QS circuit without killing the pathogens is a very promising alternative to using antibiotics which generate antibiotic resistance. The identity and diversity of bioluminescent bacteria associated with Philippine aquatic organisms, and their potential as sources of anti-QS or quorum quenching (QQ) molecules remain unknown. In this study, out of 43 organisms, 30 were observed to harbor bioluminescent bacteria with 26 from marine and four from freshwater sources. Purified bioluminescent bacterial cultures were screened for QQ activity using motility assay and the membrane fractions (MF) of 5 isolates from marine organisms namely Johnius sp. (croaker), Sillago sp. (golden-lined sillago), Variola louti (yellow-edged lyretail), Strombus variabilis (variable conch), Cistopus indicus (octopus), and one from a freshwater host, Chanos chanos (milkfish), inhibited the QS-mediated swarming of Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain NSRI based on statistical analysis using Paired t-test and Univariate Analysis of Variance (p \u3c 0.05). Despite the host differences, the bacterial isolates shared evolutionary relationship with commonly known bioluminescent genera based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis with five strains belonging to the genus Photobacterium (P. leiognathi and P. mandapamensis, 99-100% identity), and two to the genus Vibrio (V. harveyi and V. campbellii, with 99% identity)

    Anaerobic removal of 1-methoxy-2-propanol under ambient temperature in an EGSB reactor

    Two laboratory-scale expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB) reactors were operated at 18 and 25 C, respectively, for the treatment of synthetic wastewater composed of ethanol and 1-methoxy-2-propanol (M2P) in a mass ratio of 4:1. Reactors were operated first with continuous wastewater supply and after with discontinuous substrate supply (5 days a week, 16 h a day) to simulate shift working conditions. Under continuous wastewater supply chemical oxygen demand (COD), removal efficiency higher than 95 % was achieved at the end of the trial applying organic loading rates (OLR) of 29 and 43 kg COD m-3 day-1 at 18 and 25 C; thus, corresponding to M2P OLR of 6.4 and 9.3 kg COD m-3 day-1, respectively. During intermittent supply of substrate, good performance was recorded at both temperatures with an OLR of 30 kg COD m-3 day-1 (M2P OLR of 6.6 kg COD m-3 day-1). After 56 h without substrate supply, a decline in methane yield of 15¿30 % was observed due to the deactivation of the biomass. Specific methanogenic activity (SMA) assays were carried out at the end of the experiments. SMA values using 1-methoxy-2-propanol as substrate were 24.3 and 7.8 ml CH4 gVSS-1 day-1 at 25 C and at 18 C, respectively. This is the first attempt to investigate the removal of 1-methoxy-2-propanol by EGSB reactors

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Collagen Triple Helix Repeat Containing-1 (CTHRC1) and Nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 3 (NFE2L3) may be useful biomarker candidates for the diagnosis of colorectal cancer (CRC) since they have shown an increase messenger RNA transcripts (mRNA) expression level in adenomas and colorectal tumours when compared to normal tissues.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>To evaluate CTHRC1 and NFE2L3 as cancer biomarkers, it was generated and characterised several novel specific polyclonal antibodies (PAb), monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) and soluble Fab fragments (sFabs) against recombinant CTHRC1 and NFE2L3 proteins, which were obtained from different sources, including a human antibody library and immunised animals. The antibodies and Fab fragments were tested for recognition of native CTHRC1 and NFE2L3 proteins by immunoblotting analysis and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in colorectal cell lines derived from tumour and cancer tissues.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Both, antibodies and a Fab fragment showed high specificity since they recognised only their corresponding recombinant antigens, but not a panel of different unrelated- and related proteins.</p> <p>In Western blot analysis of CTHRC1, a monoclonal antibody designated CH21D7 was able to detect a band of the apparent molecular weight of a full-length CTHRC1 in the human colon adenocarcinoma cell line HT29. This result was confirmed by a double antibody sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (DAS-ELISA) with the monoclonal antibodies CH21D7 and CH24G2, detecting CTHRC1 in HT29 and in the colon adenocarcinoma cell line SW620.</p> <p>Similar experiments were performed with PAb, MAbs, and sFab against NFE2L3. The immunoblot analysis showed that the monoclonal antibody 41HF8 recognised NFE2L3 in HT29, and leukocytes. These results were verified by DAS-ELISA assay using the pairs PAb/sFab E5 and MAb 41HF8/sFab E5.</p> <p>Furthermore, an immunoassay for simultaneous detection of the two cancer biomarkers was developed using a Dissociation-Enhanced Lanthanide Fluorescent Immunoassay technology (DELFIA).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>In conclusion, the antibodies obtained in this study are specific for CTHRC1 and NFE2L3 since they do not cross-react with unrelated- and related proteins and are useful for specific measurement of native CTHRC1 and NFE2L3 proteins. The antibodies and immunoassays may be useful for the analysis of CTHRC1 and NFE2L3 in clinical samples and for screening of therapeutic compounds in CRC.</p
