Permissive Controller Synthesis for Probabilistic Systems
We propose novel controller synthesis techniques for probabilistic systems
modelled using stochastic two-player games: one player acts as a controller,
the second represents its environment, and probability is used to capture
uncertainty arising due to, for example, unreliable sensors or faulty system
components. Our aim is to generate robust controllers that are resilient to
unexpected system changes at runtime, and flexible enough to be adapted if
additional constraints need to be imposed. We develop a permissive controller
synthesis framework, which generates multi-strategies for the controller,
offering a choice of control actions to take at each time step. We formalise
the notion of permissivity using penalties, which are incurred each time a
possible control action is disallowed by a multi-strategy. Permissive
controller synthesis aims to generate a multi-strategy that minimises these
penalties, whilst guaranteeing the satisfaction of a specified system property.
We establish several key results about the optimality of multi-strategies and
the complexity of synthesising them. Then, we develop methods to perform
permissive controller synthesis using mixed integer linear programming and
illustrate their effectiveness on a selection of case studies
Selective Harmonic Elimination Model Predictive Control for Multilevel Power Converters

In this study, a model predictive control (MPC) strategy that combines finite-control-set MPC with selective harmonic elimination (SHE) modulation pattern in its formulation is proposed to govern multilevel power converters. Based on a desired operating point for the system state (converter current reference), an associated predefined SHE voltage pattern is obtained as a required steady-state control input reference. Then, the cost function is formulated with the inclusion of both system state and control input references. According with the proposed reference and cost function formulation, the predictive controller prefers to track the converter output current reference in transients, while preserving the SHE voltage pattern in steady state. Hence, as evidenced by experimental results, a fast dynamic response is obtained throughout transients while a predefined voltage and current spectrum with low switching frequency is achieved in steady state
Exact theory of kinkable elastic polymers
The importance of nonlinearities in material constitutive relations has long
been appreciated in the continuum mechanics of macroscopic rods. Although the
moment (torque) response to bending is almost universally linear for small
deflection angles, many rod systems exhibit a high-curvature softening. The
signature behavior of these rod systems is a kinking transition in which the
bending is localized. Recent DNA cyclization experiments by Cloutier and Widom
have offered evidence that the linear-elastic bending theory fails to describe
the high-curvature mechanics of DNA. Motivated by this recent experimental
work, we develop a simple and exact theory of the statistical mechanics of
linear-elastic polymer chains that can undergo a kinking transition. We
characterize the kinking behavior with a single parameter and show that the
resulting theory reproduces both the low-curvature linear-elastic behavior
which is already well described by the Wormlike Chain model, as well as the
high-curvature softening observed in recent cyclization experiments.Comment: Revised for PRE. 40 pages, 12 figure
Dynamic stereo microscopy for studying particle sedimentation
We demonstrate a new method for measuring the sedimentation
of a single colloidal bead by using a combination of optical tweezers and a stereo microscope based on a spatial light modulator. We use optical tweezers to raise a micron-sized silica bead to a fixed height and then release it to observe its 3D motion while it sediments under gravity. This experimental procedure provides two independent measurements of bead diameter and a measure of Faxén’s correction, where the motion changes due to presence of the boundary
Bragg spectroscopy of a Bose-Einstein condensate
Properties of a Bose-Einstein condensate were studied by stimulated,
two-photon Bragg scattering. The high momentum and energy resolution of this
method allowed a spectroscopic measurement of the mean-field energy and of the
intrinsic momentum uncertainty of the condensate. The coherence length of the
condensate was shown to be equal to its size. Bragg spectroscopy can be used to
determine the dynamic structure factor over a wide range of energy and momentum

How to return to subjectivity? Natorp, Husserl, and Lacan on the limits of reflection
This article discusses the recent call within contemporary phenomenology to return to subjectivity in response to certain limitations of naturalistic explanations of the mind. The meaning and feasibility of this call is elaborated by connecting it to a classical issue within the phenomenological tradition concerning the possibility of investigating the first-person perspective through reflection. We will discuss how this methodological question is respectively treated and reconfigured in the works of Natorp, Husserl, and Lacan. Finally, we will lay out some possible consequences of such a cross-reading for the conception of subjectivity and the concomitant effort to account for this dimension of first-person experience in response and in addition to its omission within the standard third-person perspective of psychological research
Matter wave pulses characteristics
We study the properties of quantum single-particle wave pulses created by
sharp-edged or apodized shutters with single or periodic openings. In
particular, we examine the visibility of diffraction fringes depending on
evolution time and temperature; the purity of the state depending on the
opening-time window; the accuracy of a simplified description which uses
``source'' boundary conditions instead of solving an initial value problem; and

Preparation of anti-vicinal amino alcohols: asymmetric synthesis of D-erythro-Sphinganine, (+)-spisulosine and D-ribo-phytosphingosine
Two variations of the Overman rearrangement have been developed for the highly selective synthesis of anti-vicinal amino alcohol natural products. A MOM-ether directed palladium(II)-catalyzed rearrangement of an allylic trichloroacetimidate was used as the key step for the preparation of the protein kinase C inhibitor D-erythro-sphinganine and the antitumor agent (+)-spisulosine, while the Overman rearrangement of chiral allylic trichloroacetimidates generated by asymmetric reduction of an alpha,beta-unsaturated methyl ketone allowed rapid access to both D-ribo-phytosphingosine and L-arabino-phytosphingosine
