    Fishes in general and tilapia in particular are traded all over the world. However, it is difficult to find out their exact geographical location. One of the techniques used in the traceability of fish and its byproductsconsist in analysing in a global way the whole viable and non viable bacterial communities. For this purpose, the molecular technique employing the bacterial 16S DNA banding profiles generated by PCR-DGGE (polymerase chain reaction-Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis) was used to evaluate the differences between the bacterial profiles of fishes from Vietnam (An Giang, south province) and those of Cameroon (Yagoua, Maga, Lagdo). The different PCR-DGGE 16S rDNA banding profiles obtained were analysed and results showed that there were specific bands for each geographical location though some bands common to Cameroon and Vietnam were observed. Thismethod could be used as a rapid analytical traceability tool for fish products and could be considered as a provider of a unique biological bar code

    Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon processing in interstellar shocks

    Context: PAHs appear to be an ubiquitous interstellar dust component but the effects of shocks waves upon them have never been fully investigated. Aims: To study the effects of energetic (~0.01-1 keV) ion (H, He and C) and electron collisions on PAHs in interstellar shock waves.Methods: We calculate the ion-PAH and electron-PAH nuclear and electronic interactions, above the threshold for carbon atom loss from a PAH, in 50-200 km/s shock waves in the warm intercloud medium. Results: Interstellar PAHs (Nc = 50) do not survive in shocks with velocities greater than 100 km/s and larger PAHs (Nc = 200) are destroyed for shocks with velocities greater/equal to 125 km/s. For shocks in the ~75 - 100 km/s range, where destruction is not complete, the PAH structure is likely to be severely denatured by the loss of an important fraction (20-40%) of the carbon atoms. We derive typical PAH lifetimes of the order of a few x10^8 yr for the Galaxy. These results are robust and independent of the uncertainties in some key parameters that have yet to be well-determined experimentally. Conclusions: The observation of PAH emission in shock regions implies that that emission either arises outside the shocked region or that those regions entrain denser clumps that, unless they are completely ablated and eroded in the shocked gas, allow dust and PAHs to survive in extreme environments.Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, 3 tables, typos corrected and PAH acronym in the title substituted with full name to match version published in Astronomy and Astrophysic

    Specificity of SPIO particles for characterization of liver hemangiomas using MRI

    We investigated the specificity of superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO)â€"enhanced T1-weighted spin-echo (SE) magnetic resonance (MR) images for the characterization of liver hemangiomas. When imaging liver hemangiomas, which are the most frequent benign liver tumors, a method with very high specificity is required, which will obviate other studies, follow-up, or invasive diagnostic procedures such as percutaneous biopsy. Eighty-three lesions were examined by MR imaging at 1.5 T before and after intravenous injection of SPIO particles. Lesions were categorized as follows according to the final diagnosis: 37 hemangiomas, nine focal nodular hyperplasias (FNHs), 19 hepatocellular carcinomas (HCCs), and 18 metastases. Their signal intensity values were normalized to muscle and compared. The only lesions showing a significant increase in signal intensity ratio (lesion to muscle) on postcontrast T1-weighted SE images were hemangiomas (p < 0.001). The signal intensity ratio of hemangiomas increased on average by 70%. Based on receiver operating characteristic analysis and using a cutoff level of 50% signal increase, the specificity and sensitivity of SPIO-enhanced MR imaging for the characterization of hemangiomas would be 100% and 70%, respectively. The T1 effect of SPIO particles can help differentiate hemangiomas from other focal liver lesions such as FNHs, HCCs, and metastases and may obviate biopsy. When using SPIO particles for liver imaging, it is useful to add a T1-weighted sequence to T2-weighted images, thereby providing additional information for lesion characterizatio
