Series of experiments for empirical validation of solar gain modelling in building energy simulation codes - experimental setup, test cell characterization, specifications and uncertainty analysis
Empirical validation of building energy simulation codes is an important component in understanding the capacity and limitations of the software. Within the framework of Task 34/Annex 43 of the International Energy Agency (IEA), a series of experiments was performed in an outdoor test cell. The objective of these experiments was to provide a high-quality data set for code developers and modelers to validate their solar gain models for windows with and without shading devices. A description of the necessary specifications for modeling these experiments is provided in this paper, which includes information about the test site location, experimental setup, geometrical and thermophysical cell properties including estimated uncertainties. Computed overall thermal cell properties were confirmed by conducting a steady-state experiment without solar gains. A transient experiment, also without solar gains, and corresponding simulations from four different building energy simulation codes showed that the provided specifications result in accurate thermal cell modeling. A good foundation for the following experiments with solar gains was therefore accomplished

Magnetic Response of Magnetospirillum Gryphiswaldense
In this study we modelled and measured the U-turn trajectories of individual
magnetotactic bacteria under the application of rotating magnetic fields,
ranging in ampitude from 1 to 12 mT. The model is based on the balance between
rotational drag and magnetic torque. For accurate verification of this model,
bacteria were observed inside 5 m tall microfluidic channels, so that they
remained in focus during the entire trajectory. From the analysis of hundreds
of trajectories and accurate measurements of bacteria and magnetosome chain
dimensions, we confirmed that the model is correct within measurement error.
The resulting average rate of rotation of Magnetospirillum Gryphiswaldense is
0.74 +- 0.03 rad/mTs.Comment: 17 pages, 12 figure
Magneto-optical study of electron occupation and hole wave functions in stacked self-assembled InP quantum dots
We have studied the magnetophotoluminescence of doubly stacked layers of self-assembled InP quantum dots in a GaInP matrix. 4.0±0.1 monolayers of InP were deposited in the lower layer of each sample, whereas in the upper layer 3.9, 3.4, and 3.0 monolayers were used. Low-temperature photoluminescence measurements in zero magnetic field are used to show that, in each case, only one layer of dots is occupied by an electron, and imply that when the amount of InP in both layers is the same, the dots in the upper layer are larger. High-field photoluminescence data reveal that the position and extent of the hole wave function are strongly dependent on the amount of InP in the stack. ©2001 American Institute of Physics
Addition of romiplostim to conditioning prior to HSCT allows chemotherapy reduction while maintaining engraftment levels
Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) offers a curative treatment approach for certain benign and malignant hematologic diseases. The actual HSCT is preceded by a conditioning therapy that reduces host-vs-HSCT graft rejection and creates niche space for transplanted hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs). Conditioning consists of chemotherapy with or without irradiation and is a major cause of side effects in HSCT. However, reduction of the intensity of cytotoxic conditioning leads to higher rates of engraftment failure and increased rates of relapse. We here tested if the addition of an HSC cycling inducing agent during conditioning allows to diminish the dose of conditioning drugs without reducing subsequent transplanted HSC engraftment in a mouse HSCT model. The thrombopoietin receptor agonist romiplostim was shown to induce cell cycling activity in hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs). We thus tested if the addition of romiplostim to the clinically applied conditioning chemotherapy regimen cyclophosphamide and busulfan leads to increased efficacy of the chemotherapeutic regimen. We found that romiplostim not only sensitizes HSCs to chemotherapy but also enables a reduction of the main chemotherapeutic component busulfan by half while HSC engraftment levels are maintained in long-term, serial transplantation assays
Clonal Type I Interferon–producing and Dendritic Cell Precursors Are Contained in Both Human Lymphoid and Myeloid Progenitor Populations
Because of different cytokine responsiveness, surface receptor, and transcription factor expression, human CD11c− natural type I interferon–producing cells (IPCs) and CD11c+ dendritic cells were thought to derive through lymphoid and myeloid hematopoietic developmental pathways, respectively. To directly test this hypothesis, we used an in vitro assay allowing simultaneous IPC, dendritic cell, and B cell development and we tested lymphoid and myeloid committed hematopoietic progenitor cells for their developmental capacity. Lymphoid and common myeloid and granulocyte/macrophage progenitors were capable of developing into both functional IPCs, expressing gene transcripts thought to be associated with lymphoid lineage development, and into dendritic cells. However, clonal progenitors for both populations were about fivefold more frequent within myeloid committed progenitor cells. Thus, in humans as in mice, natural IPC and dendritic cell development robustly segregates with myeloid differentiation. This would fit with natural interferon type I–producing cell and dendritic cell activity in innate immunity, the evolutionary older arm of the cellular immune system
The I-mode confinement regime at ASDEX Upgrade: global propert ies and characterization of strongly intermittent density fluctuations
Properties of the IÂmode confinement regime on the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak are
summarized. A weak dependence of the power threshold for the LÂI transition on the toroidal
magnetic field strength is found. During improved confinement, the edge radial electric field
well deepens. Stability calculations show that the IÂmode pedestal is peelingÂballooning stable.
Turbulence investigations reveal strongly intermittent density fluctuations linked to the weakly
coherent mode in the confined plasma, which become stronger as the confinement quality
increases. Across all investigated structure sizes (

the perpendicular
wavenumber of turbulent density fluctuations), the intermittent turbulence bursts are observed.
Comparison with bolometry data shows that they move poloidally toward the XÂpoint and
finally end up in the divertor. This might be indicative that they play a role in inhibiting the
