Urban geochemical changes and pollution with potentially harmful elements in seven Russian cities
This paper presents results of an analysis of potentially harmful elements (PHEs, Pb, Zn and Cu) and conservative element (CE, Fe) concentrations in urban surface deposited sediment (USDS). The study was conducted in seven large Russian cities located in different geographic and climatic zones, and in territories with different geology and anthropogenic pressures: Chelyabinsk, Magnitogorsk, Nizhniy Novgorod, Nizhniy Tagil, Rostov-on-Don, Tyumen, and Ufa. The initial geochemical baseline relationships between PHEs and CE concentrations in the USDS were reconstructed for each city applying an approach based on linear weighted fitting of PHE as a function of CE with lower weights assigned to more polluted samples. The reconstructed average initial baseline Pb, Cu, and Zn concentrations varied between 17–52, 25–196, and 91–413 mg kg−1, respectively. Several new criteria for assessing the degree of geochemical transformation and pollution of the urban environment, such as the percentage of polluted samples, average pollutant concentration in polluted samples, and weighting degree index δ, were suggested and compared with common criteria, such as the PHE concentration and the geo-accumulation index. The environmental rank of a city significantly differed depending on whether the criterion for ranking was total PHE pollution or changes in comparison with the initial geochemical baseline. © 2020, The Author(s).Russian Science Foundation, RSF: 18-77-10024The study was supported by Russian Science Foundation (grant No. 18-77-10024)
Individual differences in the shape of the nasal visual field
AbstractBetween-subject differences in the shape of the nasal visual field were assessed for 103 volunteers 21–85years of age and free of visual disorder. Perimetry was conducted with a stimulus for which contrast sensitivity is minimally affected by peripheral defocus and decreased retinal illumination. One eye each was tested for 103 volunteers free of eye disease in a multi-center prospective longitudinal study. A peripheral deviation index was computed as the difference in log contrast sensitivity at outer (25–29° nasal) and inner (8° from fixation) locations. Values for this index ranged from 0.01 (outer sensitivity slightly greater than inner sensitivity) to −0.7 log unit (outer sensitivity much lower than inner sensitivity). Mean sensitivity for the inner locations was independent of the deviation index (R2<1%), while mean sensitivity for the outer locations was not (R2=38%, p<0.0005). Age was only modestly related to the index, with a decline by 0.017 log unit per decade (R2=10%). Test-retest data for 21 volunteers who completed 7–10 visits yielded standard deviations for the index from 0.04 to 0.17 log unit, with a mean of 0.09 log unit. Between-subject differences in peripheral deviation persisted over two years of longitudinal testing. Peripheral deviation indices were correlated with indices for three other perimetric stimuli used in a subset of 24 volunteers (R2 from 20% to 49%). Between-subject variability in shape of the visual field raises concerns about current clinical visual field indices, and further studies are needed to develop improved indices

The ultrastructure of thè v. colica sinistra in a case of generalized vasomegaìy
in man was examined. Elastic material was found in three forms: as a lightly osmiophii
amorphous material bordering on myocytes, as a highly osmiophii elastic membrana,
and as highly osmiophii slim elastic fibres of different orientation in thè tunica media
and adventitia. The slightly osmiophii elastic material is assumed to be newly formed.

its impairment. No typical atherosclerotic changes were found in thè examined vein.
Based on a comparison with previous findings in thè case of vasomegaìy of thè
a. mesenterica inferior, thè authors conclude that thè venomegaly phenomenon is connected
with degenerative changes in thè elastic material of thè vessel wall
Knowledge of learning disabilities: the relationship with choice, duty of care and non-aversive approaches
The present study examines the relationship between the knowledge of the diagnostic criteria for a learning disability (based on DSM IV criteria), care practices and experience in health care and social care staff. Responses to a questionnaire were analysed in terms of participants emphasis on: recognizing duty of care; enabling choice; non-aversive and aversive strategies. Results indicated that the knowledge of the criteria for a learning disability was limited, with only I6% of the sample correctly identifying all three criteria. There were no significant differences between the two groups in relation to experience or level of knowledge. No clear cut differences were found between the groups in relation to tendency to emphasize a particular management approach, with the strategies adopted appearing to be influenced by vignettes used in this study. Participants tended to give responses that identified both a recognition of their duty of care to clients and the need to enable choice. Limitations of this study are discussed
Constructive control of quantum systems using factorization of unitary operators
We demonstrate how structured decompositions of unitary operators can be
employed to derive control schemes for finite-level quantum systems that
require only sequences of simple control pulses such as square wave pulses with
finite rise and decay times or Gaussian wavepackets. To illustrate the
technique it is applied to find control schemes to achieve population transfers
for pure-state systems, complete inversions of the ensemble populations for
mixed-state systems, create arbitrary superposition states and optimize the

Coarse technogenic material in urban surface deposited sediments (Usds)
In the current paper, the analysis of heavy mineral concentrate (Schlich analysis) was used to study the particles of technogenic origin in the samples of urban surface-deposited sediments (USDS). The USDS samples were collected in the residential areas of 10 Russian cities located in different economic, climatic, and geological zones: Ufa, Perm, Tyumen, Chelyabinsk, Nizhny Tagil, Magnitogorsk, Nizhny Novgorod, Rostov-on-Don, Murmansk, and Ekaterinburg. The number of technogenic particles was determined in the coarse particle size fractions of 0.1–0.25 and 0.25–1 mm. The types of technogenic particle were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. The amount of technogenic material differed from city to city; the fraction of technogenic particles in the samples varied in the range from 0.01 to 0.43 with an average value of 0.18. The technogenic particles in USDS samples were represented by lithoid and granulated slag, iron and silicate microspheres, fragments of brick, paint, glass, plaster, and other household waste. Various types of technogenic particle differed in morphological characteristics as well as in chemical composition. The novelty and significance of the study comprises the following: it has been shown that technogenic particles are contained in a significant part of the USDS; the quantitative indicators of the accumulation of technogenic particles in the urban landscape have been determined; the contributions of various types of particles to the total amount of technogenic material were estimated for the urban landscape; the trends in the transformation of typomorphic elemental associations in the urban sediments associated with the material of technogenic origin were demonstrated; and the alteration trends in the USDS microelemental content were revealed, taking into account the impurities in the composition of technogenic particles. © 2021 by the authors. MODELING SEDIMENT PRODUCTION IN URBAN ENVIRONMENTS: CASE OF RUSSIAN CITIES
The aim of this study is to provide a tool to assess sediment production in an urban area. The urban environment is affected by a variety of anthropogenic and natural factors that, in particular, lead to the sediment production. The storage of sediments in the urban landscape negatively affects the quality of the urban environment. The model was developed on the basis of landscape studies conducted in residential areas of six Russian cities. The model takes into account (1) the influence of precipitation, spring snowmelt, and vehicles, (2) the influence of erosion factors for two seasons: warm (t>5°C) and cold (t<5°C), and (3) the presence of disturbed surfaces. The application of the developed model to Ekaterinburg city conditions returned sediment production equal to 1.2 kg/m2/y. A comparison of seasonal values shows that sediment production in cold season is 2.5 times higher than in the warm season. In the absence of the disturbed surfaces, sediment production decreases to 0.44 kg/m2/y. Modeling showed a correlation between sediment production in Russian cities and duration of the cold season. The efficiency of various urban area maintenance practices and cleaning measures were evaluated in terms of sediment production and storage. The developed model presented in this paper is based on research in Russian cities, but can be applied to assess the formation of sediment and measures to reduce the value of its accumulation in the urban environment in different regions of the world. © 2023, Russian Geographical Society. Assessment of Effective Doses Due to Inhalation of Natural Radioactivity in the Dust of Urban Environment
The inhalation exposure to dust in the urban environment for adult and child is very important due to health issues. The radionuclides Ra-226 and Th-232 were measured in the samples of urban surface deposited sediments. The average concentrations of Ra-226 and Th-232 in dust are 20.8 and 15.3 Bq kg-1, respectively. The effective dose is estimated depending on the daily activity and air dust concentration for the adult and child. The results show that the total effective dose received during 70 years by adult without outdoor activity is 0.74 μSv under exposure to air dust concentration 1×10-4 g/m3, which is typical for the city of Ekaterinburg. Critical scenario of exposure of an adult person to radioactive material in particulate matter in the air including such daily activities as training, bicycle driving and work in urban environment results in the total effective dose 17.8 μSv during 70 years at air dust concentration equal to the diurnal Maximum Permissible Limit (1.5×10-4 g/m3). Also, the critical children group can be exposed to radionuclides by inhalation through daily outdoor games, sport activity, training, bicycle etc (8 hours daily during vacation, 4 hours daily during school time, 2000 hours per year from 7 years to 17 years). The total effective dose for critical children group is 2.9 μSv. Thus, the effective doses due to inhalation of natural radioactivity in the dust in city of Ekaterinburg are relatively low in comparison ICRP reference level. © 2020 American Institute of Physics Inc.. Anharmonicity, vibrational instability and Boson peak in glasses
We show that a {\em vibrational instability} of the spectrum of weakly
interacting quasi-local harmonic modes creates the maximum in the inelastic
scattering intensity in glasses, the Boson peak. The instability, limited by
anharmonicity, causes a complete reconstruction of the vibrational density of
states (DOS) below some frequency , proportional to the strength of
interaction. The DOS of the new {\em harmonic modes} is independent of the
actual value of the anharmonicity. It is a universal function of frequency
depending on a single parameter -- the Boson peak frequency, which
is a function of interaction strength. The excess of the DOS over the Debye
value is at low frequencies and linear in in the
interval . Our results are in an excellent
