    Proper identification of RR Lyrae Stars brighter than 12.5 mag

    RR Lyrae stars are of great importance for investigations of Galactic structure. However, a complete compendium of all RR-Lyraes in the solar neighbourhood with accurate classifications and coordinates does not exist to this day. Here we present a catalogue of 561 local RR-Lyrae stars V_max less equal 12.5 mag according to the magnitudes given in the Combined General Catalogue of Variable Stars (GCVS) and 16 fainter ones. The Tycho2 catalogue contains about 100 RR Lyr stars. However, many objects have inaccurate coordinates in the GCVS, the primary source of variable star information, so that a reliable cross-identification is difficult. We identified RR Lyrae from both catalogues based on an intensive literature search. In dubious cases we carried out photometry of fields to identify the variable. Mennessier and Colome (2002) have published a paper with Tyc2-GCVS identifications, but we found that many of their identifications are wrong.     Hysteresis of atmospheric parameters of 12 RR Lyrae stars based on multichannel simultaneous Stroemgren photometry

    RR Lyrae stars have been observed to improve the insight into the processes at work in their atmospheres. Simultaneous Stroemgren-photometry allows to obtain a rapid sequence of measurements in which photometric indices are unaffected by non-optimum observing conditions. The indices y, b-y, and c_1 are used with an established calibration to derive T_eff and to derive the gravity, log g_BJ from the Balmer jump, throughout the pulsation cycle. By employing the equations for stellar structure, additional parameters can be derived. Stroemgren photometry and its calibration in terms of T_eff and log g can be used to determine the run of R and the atmosphere pulsation velocity. We find that the Balmer-line strengths are correlated with T_eff and that the strength of the Ca_ii K line correlates well with the radius of the star and thus the pulsation-dependent density of the atmosphere. The density in the stellar atmosphere fluctuates as indicated by the changes in the gravity log g_BJ, derived from c_1, between 2.3 and 4.5 dex. Also the Stroemgren metal index, m_1, fluctuates. We find a disagreement between log g(T,L,M), the gravity calculated from T_eff, L, and the mass M,and the gravity log g_BJ. This can be used to reassess the mass and the absolute magnitude of an individual star.The curves derived for the pulsational velocity V_pul differ from curves obtained from spectra needed to apply the Baade-Wesselink method; we think these differences are due to phase dependent differences in the optical depth levels sampled in continuum photometry and in spectroscopy.     Automatic 4-D Registration in Dynamic MR Renography Based on Over-complete Dyadic Wavelet and Fourier Transforms

    Dynamic contrast-enhanced 4-D MR renography has the potential for broad clinical applications, but suffers from respiratory motion that limits analysis and interpretation. Since each examination yields at least over 10-20 serial 3-D images of the abdomen, manual registration is prohibitively labor-intensive. Besides in-plane motion and translation, out-of-plane motion and rotation are observed in the image series. In this paper, a novel robust and automated technique for removing out-of-plane translation and rotation with sub-voxel accuracy in 4-D dynamic MR images is presented. The method was evaluated on simulated motion data derived directly from a clinical patient's data. The method was also tested on 24 clinical patient kidney data sets. Registration results were compared with a mutual information method, in which differences between manually co-registered time-intensity curves and tested time-intensity curves were compared. Evaluation results showed that our method agreed well with these ground truth data

    Quantification of biventricular myocardial function using cardiac magnetic resonance feature tracking, endocardial border delineation and echocardiographic speckle tracking in patients with repaired tetralogy of fallot and healthy controls

    Background: Parameters of myocardial deformation have been suggested to be superior to conventional measures of ventricular function in patients with tetralogy of Fallot (ToF), but have required non-routine, tagged cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) techniques. We assessed biventricular myocardial function using CMR cine-based feature racking (FT) and compared it to speckle tracking echocardiography (STE) and to simple endocardial border delineation (EBD). In addition, the relation between parameters of myocardial deformation and clinical parameters was assessed. Methods: Overall, 28 consecutive adult patients with repaired ToF (age 40.4 ± 13.3 years) underwent standard steadystate- free precession sequence CMR, echocardiography, and cardiopulmonary exercise testing. In addition, 25 healthy subjects served as controls. Myocardial deformation was assessed by CMR based FT (TomTec Diogenes software), CMR based EBD (using custom written software) and STE (TomTec Cardiac Performance Analysis software). Results: Feature tracking was feasible in all subjects. A close agreement was found between measures of global left (LV) and right ventricular (RV) global strain. Interobserver agreement for FT and STE was similar for longitudinal LV global strain, but FT showed better inter-observer reproducibility than STE for circumferential or radial LV and longitudinal RV global strain. Reproducibility of regional strain on FT was, however, poor. The relative systolic length change of the endocardial border measured by EBD yielded similar results to FT global strain. Clinically, biventricular longitudinal strain on FT was reduced compared to controls (P<0.0001) and was related to the number of previous cardiac operations. In addition, FT derived RV strain was related to exercise capacity and VE/VCO2-slope. Conclusions: Although neither the inter-study reproducibility nor accuracy of FT software were investigated, and its interobserver reproducibility for regional strain calculation was poor, its calculations of global systolic strain showed similar or better inter-oberver reproducibility than those by STE, and could be applied across RV image regions inaccessible to echo. ‘Global strain’ calculated by EBD gave similar results to FT. Measurements made using FT related to exercise tolerance in ToF patients suggesting that the approach could have clinical relevance and deserves further study

    Целью работы является ознакомление с новой методикой определения трещиностойкости конструкционных материалов, разрабатываемой в лаборатории физической мезомеханики ИФПМ СО РАН, и проверка методики на примере технического титана ВТ1-0. Испытания проводятся методом расклинивания малоразмерных образцов с шевронным надрезом. По полученным данным строится диаграмма нагружения в координатах "сила давления на клин – смещение сторон надреза". В качестве основной характеристики трещиностойкости определяется удельная энергия разрушения.The aim of this work is to study a new technique for determining the fracture toughness of structural materials and testing the technique using the samples of technical titanium VT1-0. The technique is developed in the laboratory of physical mesomechanics of ISPMS SB RAS. Tests are carried out by the method of wedging small-sized samples with a chevron notch. According to the obtained data, a loading diagram is constructed in the coordinates "force of pressure on the wedge - displacement of the sides of the incision". The specific fracture energy is determined as the main characteristic of crack resistance

    Multidetector computed tomography angiography for assessment of in-stent restenosis: meta-analysis of diagnostic performance

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Multi-detector computed tomography angiography (MDCTA)of the coronary arteries after stenting has been evaluated in multiple studies.</p> <p>The purpose of this study was to perform a structured review and meta-analysis of the diagnostic performance of MDCTA for the detection of in-stent restenosis in the coronary arteries.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A Pubmed and manual search of the literature on in-stent restenosis (ISR) detected on MDCTA compared with conventional coronary angiography (CA) was performed. Bivariate summary receiver operating curve (SROC) analysis, with calculation of summary estimates was done on a stent and patient basis. In addition, the influence of study characteristics on diagnostic performance and number of non-assessable segments (NAP) was investigated with logistic meta-regression.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Fourteen studies were included. On a stent basis, Pooled sensitivity and specificity were 0.82(0.72–0.89) and 0.91 (0.83–0.96). Pooled negative likelihood ratio and positive likelihood ratio were 0.20 (0.13–0.32) and 9.34 (4.68–18.62) respectively. The exclusion of non-assessable stents and the strut thickness of the stents had an influence on the diagnostic performance. The proportion of non-assessable stents was influenced by the number of detectors, stent diameter, strut thickness and the use of an edge-enhancing kernel.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The sensitivity of MDTCA for the detection of in-stent stenosis is insufficient to use this test to select patients for further invasive testing as with this strategy around 20% of the patients with in-stent stenosis would be missed. Further improvement of scanner technology is needed before it can be recommended as a triage instrument in practice. In addition, the number of non-assessable stents is also high.</p

    Three-Dimensional Object Registration Using Wavelet Features

    Recent developments in shape-based modeling and data acquisition have brought three-dimensional models to the forefront of computer graphics and visualization research. New data acquisition methods are producing large numbers of models in a variety of fields. Three-dimensional registration (alignment) is key to the useful application of such models in areas from automated surface inspection to cancer detection and surgery. The algorithms developed in this research accomplish automatic registration of three-dimensional voxelized models. We employ features in a wavelet transform domain to accomplish registration. The features are extracted in a multi-resolutional format, thus delineating features at various scales for robust and rapid matching. Registration is achieved by using a voting scheme to select peaks in sets of rotation quaternions, then separately identifying translation. The method is robust to occlusion, clutter, and noise. The efficacy of the algorithm is demonstrated through examples from solid modeling and medical imaging applications

    DNA replication licensing and cell cycle kinetics of oligodendroglial tumours

    The convergence point of growth-signalling pathways that control cell proliferation is the initiation of genome replication, the core of which is the assembly of pre-replicative complexes (pre-RCs), resulting in chromatin being ‘licensed’ for DNA replication in the subsequent S phase. The Mcm2–7 complex is a core constituent of the pre-RC, whose recruitment to replication origins is dependent on the Cdt1 loading factor. Geminin is a potent inhibitor of the initiation of DNA replication by preventing Mcm2–7 assembly at origins via its interaction with Cdt1, ensuring genomic integrity through suppression of re-initiation events in S phase. Here we investigate the regulation of Ki67, Mcm2, p21, caspase 3 and Geminin in a series of 55 oligodendrogliomas to provide an integrated picture of how cellular proliferation and programmed cell death are dysregulated in these tumours. Geminin does not behave as an inhibitor of cell proliferation, its labelling index rising with increasing growth fraction as defined by Ki67 or Mcm2 expression. Geminin is expressed in a higher proportion of cells in higher grade tumours (P<0.001) and shows a strong correlation to proliferation and replication licensing (P<0.01), but not apoptosis. Increasing tumour anaplasia is not associated with loss of Geminin. Importantly, the G1 phase of the proliferative cell cycle, as assessed by the Geminin/Ki67 ratio, shortens with increasing anaplasia, providing new potential algorithms for prognostic assessment. Origin licensing proteins thus provide powerful novel tools for assessment of tumour cell cycle kinetics in routinely processed surgical biopsy material
