Stochastic model of hysteresis
The methods of the probability theory have been used in order to build up a
new model of hysteresis. It turns out that the reversal points of the control
parameter (e. g., the magnetic field) are Markov points which determine the
stochastic evolution of the process. It has been shown that the branches of the
hysteresis loop are converging to fixed limit curves when the number of cyclic
back-and-forth variations of the control parameter between two consecutive
reversal points is large enough. This convergence to limit curves gives a clear
explanation of the accommodation process. The accommodated minor loops show the
return-point memory property but this property is obviously absent in the case
of non-accommodated minor loops which are not congruent and generally not
closed. In contrast to the traditional Preisach model the reversal point
susceptibilities are non-zero finite values. The stochastic model can provide a
good approximation of the Raylaigh quadratic law when the external parameter
varies between two sufficiently small values.Comment: 13 pages, 14 figure
Early atherosclerosis and Chlamydia Pneumoniae Infection in the Coronary Arteries
In non-atheromatous segments of coronary arteries a sequence of preatherosclerotic changes was identified which consisted of medial thickening followed by intimal thickening. More recently, Chlamydia pneumoniae seropositivity was associated with enhanced intima-media thickness of arteries. In the present study the intimal and medial thickness of coronary artery of young adults were measured, and were correlated with the presence of Chlamydia pneumoniae antigens. Proximal and distal segments of the left anterior descending coronaries (LAD) obtained at autopsy from young adults (15-34 years) were studied. The thickness and cellular density of the intima and of the media without clear-cut atherosclerotic changes were measured by image analysis. The hypertrophy index was calculated as the ratio of cell density and the thickness of the respective layer. Atherosclerotic lesions occurring elsewhere in the same coronary were noted and graded by severity. The presence of Chlamydia pneumoniae verified by immunohistochemistry was correlated with the severity of lesions and with the hypertrophy index. In the proximal segments, atherosclerosis of LAD was associated with the widening of both the intima and the media of lesion free-sites. In the distal coronary segments the proportion of the intimal thickening had a significant association with atherosclerosis. Compared to non-infected arteries, Chlamydia pneumoniae infection was associated with higher hypertrophy index in the intima as well as in the media. The rate of Chlamydia pneumoniae positivity increased with the severity of lesions. As a conclusion: in the LAD coronary, the intimal thickening is the main preatherosclerotic change. Chlamydia pneumoniae may favour arterial wall hypertrophy and plays a role in lesion progression
Seasonal dynamics, age structure and reproduction of four Carabus species (Coleoptera: Carabidae) living in forested landscapes in Hungary
Seasonal dynamics and reproductive phenological parameters of four Carabus species (C. convexus, C. coriaceus, C. germarii and C. hortensis) common in Hungary were studied by pitfall trapping and dissection. Beetles were collected in an abandoned apple orchard and in the bordering oak forest near Budapest (Central Hungary), in 1988–1991. The sex ratio was male-dominated, but this was significant only for C. coriaceus. The catch of C. germarii adults showed relatively short activity period with unimodal curve, but activity was longer and bimodal for the other three species. Adults of C. germarii and C. hortensis reached sexual maturity in July, and C. coriaceus adults were matured by early August. We did not find newly hatched individuals of C. coriaceus or C. germarii. The reproductive period was approximately four weeks in C. hortensis, five weeks for C. coriaceus and six weeks for C. germarii. Reproduction lasted much longer, for about four months, in C. convexus. The mean number of ripe eggs per female were 4.2 in C. convexus, 5.4 in C. coriaceus, 6.6 in C. germarii, and 7.4 in C. hortensis. The maximum number found was about three times the average in all studied species. The reproductive allocation (ratio of egg complement mass/body mass) was lowest in C. germarii (0.133) and highest in C. hortensis (0.196), and did not depend on body size. There was minimal overlap of the activity and reproductive periods of the four species
Caffeine content of conventional and non conventional foods on the Hungarian market
Caffeine content of 377 food samples obtained from the Hungarian market was measured by a validated HPLC technique. The highest caffeine levels were observed in different instant coffees (3954±2355 mg/100 g) and ground coffee beans (1634±389 mg/100 g). Significant amount of caffeine could be detected in energy drinks (119 mg in 100 ml at the highest end). The caffeine content of different coffee drinks varied between 40 and 203 mg/100 ml. Significant amount of caffeine could be measured in special instant coffees called 2in1 and 3in1 (120 mg per serving at the highest end), cacao powders (125 mg in 100 g), in chocolates (on average, 16.1 mg and 52.5 mg in 100 g milk and dark chocolate, respectively), breakfast cereals (between 5.7 and 15.8 mg per 100 g), and ice creams (1.7–24.8 mg in 100 g)
European studies: Taking stock and looking ahead
This essay is an attempt to generalize experiences of Central and Eastern European universities in the field of European Studies over the past 20 years. The paper follows the logic of business analysis in order to come up with proposals for future action
dUTPase based switch controls transfer of virulence genes in order to preserve integrity of the transferred mobile genetic elements
dUTPases ubiquitously regulate cellular dUTP levels to preserve
genome integrity. Recently, several other cellular processes were
reported to be controlled by dUTPases including the horizontal
transfer of Staphylococcus aureus pathogenicity islands (SaPI).
SaPIs are mobil genetic elements that encode virulence enhancing
factors e.g. toxins. Here, phage dUTPases were proposed to
counteract the repressor protein (Stl) and promote SaPI excision
and transfer. A G protein-like mechanism was proposed which is
unexpected in light of the kinetic mechanism of dUTPase.
Here we investigate the molecular mechanism of SaPI transfer
regulation, using numerous dUTPase variants and a wide range
of in vitro methods (steady-state and transient kinetics, VIS and
fluorescence spectroscopy, EMSA, quartz crystal microbalance,
X-ray crystallography).
Our results unambiguously show that Stl inhibits the enzymatic
activity of dUTPase in the nM concentration range and
dUTP strongly inhibits the dUTPase: Stl complexation. These
results identify Stl as a highly potent dUTPase inhibitor protein
and disprove the G protein-like mechanism. Importantly, our
results clearly show that the dUTPase:dUTP complex is inaccessible
to the Stl repressor. Unlike in small GTPases, hydrolysis of
the substrate nucleoside triphosphate (dUTP in this case) is
required prior to the interaction with the partner (Stl repressor in
this case). We propose that dUTPase can efficiently interact with
Stl and induce SaPI excision only if the cellular dUTP level is low (i.e. when dUTPase resides mainly in the apo enzyme form)
while high dUTP levels would inhibit SaPI transfer. This mechanism
may serve the preservation of the integrity of the transferred
SaPI genes and links the well-known metabolic role of
dUTPases to their newly revealed regulatory function in spread
of virulence factors
Functional analysis on a naturally occurring variant of the Staphylococcus Aureus uracil DNA Glycosylase inhibitor
Repair of DNA damage relies on various pathways including the base excision repair (BER) which targets erroneous bases in the DNA. Here, Uracil-DNA glycosylases (UDGs) are responsible for recognition and removal of uracil base from the DNA. Here, we characterize the interaction of Staphylococcus aureus UDG (SAUDG) with a naturally occurring variant of S. aureus uracil-DNA glycosylase inhibitor (SAUGI). This variant contains a histidine instead of a glutamate at the 24th position which affects the SAUDG:SAUGI interaction surface. We assessed the complex formation of SAUDG with these two SAUGI variants by independent biophysical methods. Our data reveal that the residue difference at the 24th position does not have a marked effect on the binding affinity, yet it confers alteration of the thermodynamics of the interaction. We propose that the E24H variant of SAUGI allows efficient complex formation, and consequently, inhibition of SAUDG. © 2018, Budapest University of Technology and Economics. All rights reserved
Combination of ensiling and fungal delignification as effective wheat straw pretreatment
BACKGROUND: Utilization of lignocellulosic feedstocks for bioenergy production in developing countries demands competitive but low-tech conversion routes. White-rot fungi (WRF) inoculation and ensiling are two methods previously investigated for low-tech pretreatment of biomasses such as wheat straw (WS). This study was undertaken to assess whether a combination of forced ensiling with Lactobacillus buchneri and WRF treatment using a low cellulase fungus, Ceriporiopsissubvermispora, could produce a relevant pretreatment effect on WS for bioethanol and biogas production. RESULTS: A combination of the ensiling and WRF treatment induced efficient pretreatment of WS by reducing lignin content and increasing enzymatic sugar release, thereby enabling an ethanol yield of 66Â % of the theoretical max on the WS glucan, i.e. a yield comparable to yields obtained with high-tech, large-scale pretreatment methods. The pretreatment effect was reached with only a minor total solids loss of 5Â % by weight mainly caused by the fungal metabolism. The combination of the biopretreatments did not improve the methane potential of the WS, but improved the initial biogas production rate significantly. CONCLUSION: The combination of the L. buchneri ensiling and C. subvermispora WRF treatment provided a significant improvement in the pretreatment effect on WS. This combined biopretreatment produced particularly promising results for ethanol production. The gauge fixed polygon model of 2+1 gravity with zero cosmological constant
and arbitrary number of spinless point particles is reconstructed from the
first order formalism of the theory in terms of the triad and the spin
