Bounds on area and charge for marginally trapped surfaces with cosmological constant

We sharpen the known inequalities AΛ≤4π(1−g)A \Lambda \le 4\pi (1-g) and A≥4πQ2A\ge 4\pi Q^2 between the area AA and the electric charge QQ of a stable marginally outer trapped surface (MOTS) of genus g in the presence of a cosmological constant Λ\Lambda. In particular, instead of requiring stability we include the principal eigenvalue λ\lambda of the stability operator. For Λ∗=Λ+λ>0\Lambda^{*} = \Lambda + \lambda > 0 we obtain a lower and an upper bound for Λ∗A \Lambda^{*} A in terms of Λ∗Q2 \Lambda^{*} Q^2 as well as the upper bound Q≤1/(2Λ∗) Q \le 1/(2\sqrt{\Lambda^{*}}) for the charge, which reduces to Q≤1/(2Λ) Q \le 1/(2\sqrt{\Lambda}) in the stable case λ≥0\lambda \ge 0. For Λ∗<0\Lambda^{*} < 0 there remains only a lower bound on AA. In the spherically symmetric, static, stable case one of the area inequalities is saturated iff the surface gravity vanishes. We also discuss implications of our inequalities for "jumps" and mergers of charged MOTS.Comment: minor corrections to previous version and to published versio

Molecular mechanics and molecular dynamics analysis of Drexler-Merkle gears and neon pump

    Get PDF
Over the past two years at the Materials and Process Simulation Center, we have been developing simulation approaches for studying the molecular nanomachine designs pioneered by Drexler and Merkle. These nanomachine designs, such as planetary gears and neon pump, are described with atomistic details and involve up to 10 000 atoms. With the Dreiding and universal force fields, we have optimized the structures of the two planetary gear designs and the neon pump. At the Fourth Foresight conference, we reported rotational impulse dynamics studies of the first and second generation designs of planetary gears undergoing very high-frequency rotational motions. We will explore stability of these designs in the lower frequency regimes which require long time simulations. We will report the molecular mechanics and molecular dynamics simulations performed on these model systems. We explore the following modes in these studies: (1) impulse mode; (2) constant angular velocity - perpetual rotation; (3) constant torque - acceleration from rest

Microscopic and Macroscopic Signatures of Antiferromagnetic Domain Walls

    Get PDF
Magnetotransport measurements on small single crystals of Cr, the elemental antiferromagnet, reveal the hysteretic thermodynamics of the domain structure. The temperature dependence of the transport coefficients is directly correlated with the real-space evolution of the domain configuration as recorded by x-ray microprobe imaging, revealing the effect of antiferromagnetic domain walls on electron transport. A single antiferromagnetic domain wall interface resistance is deduced to be of order 5×10−5μΩ⋅cm25\times10^{-5}\mathrm{\mu\Omega\cdot cm^{2}} at a temperature of 100 K.Comment: 3 color figure

Inner boundary conditions for black hole Initial Data derived from Isolated Horizons

    Get PDF
We present a set of boundary conditions for solving the elliptic equations in the Initial Data Problem for space-times containing a black hole, together with a number of constraints to be satisfied by the otherwise freely specifiable standard parameters of the Conformal Thin Sandwich formulation. These conditions altogether are sufficient for the construction of a horizon that is instantaneously in equilibrium in the sense of the Isolated Horizons formalism. We then investigate the application of these conditions to the Initial Data Problem of binary black holes and discuss the relation of our analysis with other proposals that exist in the literature.Comment: 13 pages. Major general revision. Section V comparing with previous approaches restructured; discussion on the lapse boundary condition extended. Appendix with some technical details added. Version accepted for publication in Phys.Rev.
