    Unidentifed gamma-ray sources: hunting gamma-ray blazars

    One of the main scientific objectives of the ongoing Fermi mission is unveiling the nature of the unidentified gamma-ray sources (UGSs). Despite the large improvements of Fermi in the localization of gamma-ray sources with respect to the past gamma-ray missions, about one third of the Fermi-detected objects are still not associated to low energy counterparts. Recently, using the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) survey, we discovered that blazars, the rarest class of Active Galactic Nuclei and the largest population of gamma-ray sources, can be recognized and separated from other extragalactic sources on the basis of their infrared (IR) colors. Based on this result, we designed an association method for the gamma-ray sources to reognize if there is a blazar candidate within the positional uncertainty region of a generic gamma-ray source. With this new IR diagnostic tool, we searched for gamma-ray blazar candidates associated to the UGS sample of the second Fermi gamma-ray catalog (2FGL). We found that our method associates at least one gamma-ray blazar candidate as a counterpart each of 156 out of 313 UGSs analyzed. These new low-energy candidates have the same IR properties as the blazars associated to gamma-ray sources in the 2FGL catalog.Comment: 24 pages, 4 figures, Accepted for publication on the Astrophysical Journa

    By using the Inverted Chirality Columns Approach (ICCA) we have developed an enantioselective UHPSFC method to determine the enantiomeric excess (ee) of (-)-Δ(9)-THC in medicinal marijuana (Bedrocan®). The ee was high (99.73%), but the concentration of the (+)-enantiomer (0.135%) was not negligible, and it is worth a systematic evaluation of bioactivity

    Sample size issues in time series regressions of counts on environmental exposures.

    BACKGROUND: Regression analyses of time series of disease counts on environmental determinants are a prominent component of environmental epidemiology. For planning such studies, it can be useful to predict the precision of estimated coefficients and power to detect associations of given magnitude. Existing generic approaches for this have been found somewhat complex to apply and do not easily extend to multiple series studies analysed in two stages. We have sought a simpler approximate approach which can easily extend to multiple series and give insight into factors determining precision. METHODS: We derive approximate expressions for precision and hence power in single and multiple time series studies of counts from basic statistical theory, compare the precision predicted by these with that estimated by analysis in real data from 51 cities of varying size, and illustrate the use of these estimators in a realistic planning scenario. RESULTS: In single series studies with Poisson outcome distribution, precision and power depend only on the usable variation of exposure (i.e. that conditional on covariates) and the total number of disease events, regardless of how many days those are spread over. In multiple time series (eg multi-city) studies focusing on the meta-analytic mean coefficient, the usable exposure variation and the total number of events (in all series) are again the sole determinants if there is no between-series heterogeneity or within-series overdispersion. With heterogeneity, its extent and the number of series becomes important. For all but the crudest approximation the estimates of standard errors were on average within + 20% of those estimated in full analysis of actual data. CONCLUSIONS: Predicting precision in coefficients from a planned time series study is possible simply and given limited information. The total number of disease events and usable exposure variation are the dominant factors when overdispersion and between-series heterogeneity are low

    none7An amphiphilic C60-derivative, AFE, characterized by the presence of the chiral fragment of L-acetyl carnitine in its hydrophilic appendage has been synthesized. In binary (THF/H2O) and ternary (THF/MeOH/H2O) solutions, AFE exhibits a strong tendency to self-aggregation, provided that the Hildebrand polarity index, ä, of the solvent is higher than about 15. A stable aqueous solution of aggregated AFE was obtained. Partition experiments between n-octanol and water show that AFE cannot be spontaneously transferred from water into the organic solvent (and vice versa), although it is effectively “salted-out” by common electrolytes.     High-redshift blazars through nustar eyes

    The most powerful sources among the blazar family are MeV blazars. Often detected at z>2z>2, they usually display high X- and \gm-ray luminosities, larger-than-average jet powers and black hole masses 109M\gtrsim 10^9 M_{\odot}. In the present work we perform a multiwavelength study of three high redshift blazars: 3FGL J0325.5+2223 (z=2.06z=2.06), 3FGL J0449.0+1121 (z=2.15z= 2.15), and 3FGL J0453.2-2808 (z=2.56z=2.56), analysing quasi simultaneous data from GROND, \swift-UVOT and XRT, \nustar, and \fermi-LAT. Our main focus is on the hard X-ray band recently unveiled by \nustar~(3-79 keV) where these objects show a hard spectrum which enables us to constrain the inverse Compton peak and the jet power. We found that all three targets resemble the most powerful blazars, with the synchrotron peak located in the sub-millimeter range and the inverse Compton peak in the MeV range, and therefore belong to the MeV blazar class. Using a simple one zone leptonic emission model to reproduce the spectral energy distributions, we conclude that a simple combination of synchrotron and accretion disk emission reproduces the infrared-optical spectra while the X-ray to \gm-ray part is well reproduced by the inverse Compton scattering of low energy photons supplied by the broad line region. The black hole masses for each of the three sources are calculated to be 4×108M\gtrsim 4 \times 10^{8} M_{\odot}.     Relationship of body condition score and blood urea and ammonia to pregnancy in Italian Mediterranean buffaloes

    The relationship of body condition score ( BCS) and blood urea and ammonia to pregnancy outcome was examined in Italian Mediterranean Buffalo cows mated by AI. The study was conducted on 150 buffaloes at 145 +/- 83 days in milk that were fed a diet comprising 14.8% crude protein, 0.9 milk forage units . kg(-1) dry matter and a non- structural carbohydrate/ crude protein ratio of 2.14. The stage of the oestrous cycle was synchronised by the Ovsynch- TAI programme and blood urea and ammonia levels were assessed on the day of AI. Energy corrected milk ( ECM) production and BCS were recorded bi- weekly. The pregnancy risk was 46.7% and was slightly lower in buffaloes with BCS 7.5. There were no significant differences in ECM, urea and ammonia between pregnant and non- pregnant buffaloes. However, pregnancy outcome was higher ( P = 0.02) in buffaloes with blood urea < 6.83 mmol . L-1. The likelihood of pregnancy for buffaloes with low urea blood level was 2.6 greater than for high urea level and exposure to a high urea level lowered the probability of pregnancy by about 0.25. The findings indicate that buffaloes are similar to cattle and increased blood levels of urea are associated with reduced fertility when animals are mated by AI

    Ambient heat exposure and COPD hospitalisations in England: a nationwide case-crossover study during 2007-2018

    Background: There is emerging evidence suggesting a link between ambient heat exposure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) hospitalisations. Individual and contextual characteristics can affect population vulnerabilities to COPD hospitalisation due to heat exposure. This study quantifies the effect of ambient heat on COPD hospitalisations and examines population vulnerabilities by age, sex and contextual characteristics. Methods: Individual data on COPD hospitalisation at high geographical resolution (postcodes) during 2007–2018 in England was retrieved from the small area health statistics unit. Maximum temperature at 1 km ×1 km resolution was available from the UK Met Office. We employed a case-crossover study design and fitted Bayesian conditional Poisson regression models. We adjusted for relative humidity and national holidays, and examined effect modification by age, sex, green space, average temperature, deprivation and urbanicity. Results: After accounting for confounding, we found 1.47% (95% Credible Interval (CrI) 1.19% to 1.73%) increase in the hospitalisation risk for every 1°C increase in temperatures above 23.2°C (lags 0–2 days). We reported weak evidence of an effect modification by sex and age. We found a strong spatial determinant of the COPD hospitalisation risk due to heat exposure, which was alleviated when we accounted for contextual characteristics. 1851 (95% CrI 1 576 to 2 079) COPD hospitalisations were associated with temperatures above 23.2°C annually. Conclusion: Our study suggests that resources should be allocated to support the public health systems, for instance, through developing or expanding heat-health alerts, to challenge the increasing future heat-related COPD hospitalisation burden
