In this report we summarize the work performed at Snowmass 2001 on the physics of extra dimensions. We divide these analyses into the following classes: searches for extra dimensional phenomena, identification of specific new physics scenarios, studies of black hole production and non-commutative QED.Comment: Contributed to APS / DPF / DPB Summer Study on the Future of Particle Physics (Snowmass 2001), Snowmass, Colorado, 30 Jun - 21 Jul 200

Development of an Ant Colony Optimization Algorithm to improve Maintenance Process Efficiency

    Get PDF
Efficient maintenance policies are of fundamental importance because of their fallbacks into the safety and economics of air traffic operations. Usually the optimization of maintenance process is limited to a resource optimization in position and number. But it should be considered that maintenance tasks are performed by man whose excessive workload has negative falls-out not only for workers well-being but also for process safety and efficiency. Thus, in maintenance process optimization it is necessary to take into account also ergonomic aspects of workplace. This gives rise to an optimization of the maintenance process by using an ergonomic approach. In this way, the result of the optimization could allow improvements in the quality of the work of maintenance, but also a greater efficiency of the whole maintenance system. An ant colony optimization algorithm has been developed in order to optimize the system efficiency. This kind of algorithm natively permits to improve man movements into the workplace; furthermore the optimization of the workplace ergonomics has been added. To do this, an objective function of efficiency levels has been determined, linked to any task performed by man. Some protocols have been created on the basis of a literature survey and experimental results. This paper illustrates an applied research in which a method for the optimization of the maintenance process efficiency has been developed in order to show the applicability of a tool offering benefits on both sides: the maintenance process and the related human factors

The History of Learning Disabilities and The Hidden Stories of Students, Parents, and Teachers: How Traditional Classrooms Can Improve

    Get PDF
This research will differentiate between the various learning disabilities and their history of when they were first discovered. This research reveals how classrooms have improved and what needs to be changed in order to guarantee every student can receive an equal education despite their learning disability. This paper is constructed through research and interviews with parents, teachers, and students about why the education system needs to move against conformity and standardization. This research demonstrates each learning disability and its effect on students learning. The main focus is on what issues need to be improved in the traditional education system to guarantee that students with a learning disability are supported and provided the tools that they need to succeed in their academic careers

Perceptions of Green Eating Behaviors on College Campuses in an Urban vs. Rural Setting

Background: Green Eating is a multidisciplinary approach to health in economic, public health, and environmental issues. GE has an evident impact on the quality of life in young adults, especially those on college campuses. Current evidence already supports an improved dietary intake in those who adopt GE behaviors. Objective: To determine if a university’s campus location affects first-year students’ exposure to green eating. We hypothesize that first-year students on university campuses located in urban settings are more likely to report GE awareness and practices than in rural settings. Methods: First-year students were recruited for the GetFruved study in late summer 2015 via email and data collection begun early fall 2015. The total number of participants was 1,149. Analysis: A cross-sectional, secondary analysis was completed. Green eating variables were dichotomized into ‘Always/Often’ and ‘Sometimes/Rarely/Never’ and logistic regression was used to determine the relationship between green eating and self-reported region while controlling for gender, vegetarian status, and residence hall status. Results: Of the 25 green eating questions analyzed, 17 were significantly associated with region. Those who live in the NE are 83% more likely to consider themselves a green eater as compared to those in the Midwest (p=0.008). SW is four times (4.02) more likely to purchase meat that is “free-range” or “grass-fed” with NE (2.69) and SE (1.83) to follow. SE was the lone significant region for “how often do you shop at farmers markets” (0.58) and “eating minimal processed food is better for my health” (1.61). Residence hall was only significant for one question (p=Conclusions: Students living in urban areas are more inclined to always/often report positive GE eating behaviors opposed those in rural areas. Positive behaviors toward in GE in young adults can shift the consumer demand from low-cost convivence food to better quality foods and therefore, largely impact their diets
