Simulating Gender Stratification
The simulation of promotional competitions in corporations described herein allows comparisons of suggested reasons for the paucity of women in the highest level of corporate management. Runs with small, medium and large-sized companies all give similar results. The strongest effect is evidenced when men are given a bonus in performance evaluations. Similar stratification is observed when men's scores are drawn from a distribution with increased variance. Other explanations (increased female attrition, career delays for women, line-staff divisions, and external labor market) do not, by themselves produce strong gender stratification, but could add to that produced by biased evaluations.Glass Ceiling, Gender Stratification, Promotion, Performance Evaluation Bias, Computer Simulation
Aerodynamic performance of conventional and advanced design labyrinth seals with solid-smooth abradable, and honeycomb lands
Labyrinth air seal static and dynamic performance was evaluated using solid, abradable, and honeycomb lands with standard and advanced seal designs. The effects on leakage of land surface roughness, abradable land porosity, rub grooves in abradable lands, and honeycomb land cell size and depth were studied using a standard labyrinth seal. The effects of rotation on the optimum seal knife pitch were also investigated. Selected geometric and aerodynamic parameters for an advanced seal design were evaluated to derive an optimized performance configuration. The rotational energy requirements were also measured to determine the inherent friction and pumping energy absorbed by the various seal knife and land configurations tested in order to properly assess the net seal system performance level. Results indicate that: (1) seal leakage can be significantly affected with honeycomb or abradable lands; (2) rotational energy absorption does not vary significantly with the use of a solid-smooth, an abradable, or a honeycomb land; and (3) optimization of an advanced lab seal design produced a configuration that had leakage 25% below a conventional stepped seal
A Molecular Einstein Ring: Imaging a Starburst Disk Surrounding a Quasi-Stellar Object
Images of the CO 2-1 line emission, and the radio continuum emission, from
the redshift 4.12 gravitationally lensed quasi-stellar object (QSO) PSS
J2322+1944 reveal an Einstein ring with a diameter of 1.5". These observations
are modeled as a star forming disk surrounding the QSO nucleus with a radius of
2 kpc. The implied massive star formation rate is 900 M_sun/year. At this rate
a substantial fraction of the stars in a large elliptical galaxy could form on
a dynamical time scale of 10^8 years. The observation of active star formation
in the host galaxy of a high-redshift QSO supports the hypothesis of coeval
formation of supermassive black holes and stars in spheroidal galaxies.Comment: 12 pages. to appear in Science, April 200
ISOCAM spectro-imaging of the H2 rotational lines in the supernova remnant IC443
We report spectro-imaging observations of the bright western ridge of the
supernova remnant IC 443 obtained with the ISOCAM circular variable filter
(CVF) on board the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO). This ridge corresponds to
a location where the interaction between the blast wave of the supernova and
ambient molecular gas is amongst the strongest. The CVF data show that the 5 to
14 micron spectrum is dominated by the pure rotational lines of molecular
hydrogen (v = 0--0, S(2) to S(8) transitions). At all positions along the
ridge, the H2 rotational lines are very strong with typical line fluxes of
10^{-4} to 10^{-3} erg/sec/cm2/sr. We compare the data to a new time-dependent
shock model; the rotational line fluxes in IC 443 are reproduced within factors
of 2 for evolutionary times between 1,000 and 2,000 years with a shock velocity
of 30 km/sec and a pre-shock density of 10^4 /cm3.Comment: To appear in Astronomy and Astrophysic
Small Energy Scale for Mixed-Valent Uranium Materials
We investigate a two-channel Anderson impurity model with a magnetic
and a quadrupolar ground doublet, and a excited triplet. Using
the numerical renormalization group method, we find a crossover to a non-Fermi
liquid state below a temperature varying as the triplet-doublet
splitting to the 7/2 power. To within numerical accuracy, the non-linear
magnetic susceptibility and the contribution to the linear
susceptibility are given by universal one-parameter scaling functions. These
results may explain UBe as mixed valent with a small crossover scale

Fractal time random walk and subrecoil laser cooling considered as renewal processes with infinite mean waiting times
There exist important stochastic physical processes involving infinite mean
waiting times. The mean divergence has dramatic consequences on the process
dynamics. Fractal time random walks, a diffusion process, and subrecoil laser
cooling, a concentration process, are two such processes that look
qualitatively dissimilar. Yet, a unifying treatment of these two processes,
which is the topic of this pedagogic paper, can be developed by combining
renewal theory with the generalized central limit theorem. This approach
enables to derive without technical difficulties the key physical properties

Deformation of a free interface pierced by a tilted cylinder
We investigate the interaction between an infinite cylinder and a free
fluid-fluid interface governed only by its surface tension. We study the
deformation of an initially flat interface when it is deformed by the presence
of a cylindrical object, tilted at an arbitrary angle, that the interface
"totally wets". Our simulations predict all significant quantities such as the
interface shape, the position of the contact line, and the force exerted by the
interface on the cylinder. These results are compared with an experimental
study of the penetration of a soap film by a cylindrical liquid jet. This
dynamic situation exhibits all the characteristics of a totally wetting
interface. We show that whatever the inclination, the force is always
perpendicular to the plane of the interface, and its amplitude diverges as the
inclination angle increases. Such results should bring new insights in both
fluid and solid mechanics, from animal locomotion to surface

Robust pricing and hedging of double no-touch options
Double no-touch options, contracts which pay out a fixed amount provided an
underlying asset remains within a given interval, are commonly traded,
particularly in FX markets. In this work, we establish model-free bounds on the
price of these options based on the prices of more liquidly traded options
(call and digital call options). Key steps are the construction of super- and
sub-hedging strategies to establish the bounds, and the use of Skorokhod
embedding techniques to show the bounds are the best possible.
In addition to establishing rigorous bounds, we consider carefully what is
meant by arbitrage in settings where there is no {\it a priori} known
probability measure. We discuss two natural extensions of the notion of
arbitrage, weak arbitrage and weak free lunch with vanishing risk, which are
needed to establish equivalence between the lack of arbitrage and the existence

Methodological shortcomings of wrist-worn heart rate monitors validations
Wearable sensor technology could have an important role for clinical research and in delivering health care. Accordingly, such technology should undergo rigorous evaluation prior to market launch, and its performance should be supported by evidence-based marketing claims. Many studies have been published attempting to validate wrist-worn photoplethysmography (PPG)-based heart rate monitoring devices, but their contrasting results question the utility of this technology. The reason why many validations did not provide conclusive evidence of the validity of wrist-worn PPG-based heart rate monitoring devices is mostly methodological. The validation strategy should consider the nature of data provided by both the investigational and reference devices. There should be uniformity in the statistical approach to the analyses employed in these validation studies. The investigators should test the technology in the population of interest and in a setting appropriate for intended use. Device industries and the scientific community require robust standards for the validation of new wearable sensor technology
The Luminosity Dependence of Quasar Clustering
We investigate the luminosity dependence of quasar clustering, inspired by
numerical simulations of galaxy mergers that incorporate black hole growth.
These simulations have motivated a new interpretation of the quasar luminosity
function. In this picture, the bright end of the quasar luminosity function
consists of quasars radiating nearly at their peak luminosities, while the
faint end consists mainly of very similar sources, but at dimmer phases in
their evolution. We combine this model with the statistics of dark matter halos
that host quasar activity. We find that, since bright and faint quasars are
mostly similar sources seen in different evolutionary stages, a broad range in
quasar luminosities corresponds to only a narrow range in the masses of quasar
host halos. On average, bright and faint quasars reside in similar host halos.
Consequently, we argue that quasar clustering should depend only weakly on
luminosity. This prediction is in qualitative agreement with recent
measurements of the luminosity dependence of the quasar correlation function
(Croom et al. 2005) and the galaxy-quasar cross-correlation function
(Adelberger & Steidel 2005). Future precision clustering measurements from SDSS
and 2dF, spanning a large range in luminosity, should provide a strong test of
