Channelized coplanar waveguide pin-diode switches
Three different types of p-i-n diode, reflective CPW switches are presented. The first two switches are the series and the shunt mounted diode switches. Each has achieved greater than 15 dB of isolation over a broad bandwidth. The third switch is a narrow band, high isolation switched filter which has achieved 19 dB of isolation. Equivalent circuits and measured performance for each switch is presented
Coming to America: Multiple Origins of New World Geckos
Geckos in the Western Hemisphere provide an excellent model to study faunal assembly at a continental scale. We generated a time-calibrated phylogeny, including exemplars of all New World gecko genera, to produce a biogeographic scenario for the New World geckos. Patterns of New World gecko origins are consistent with almost every biogeographic scenario utilized by a terrestrial vertebrate with different New World lineages showing evidence of vicariance, dispersal via temporary land bridge, overseas dispersal, or anthropogenic introductions. We also recovered a strong relationship between clade age and species diversity, with older New World lineages having more species than more recently arrived lineages. Our data provide the first phylogenetic hypothesis for all New World geckos and highlight the intricate origins and ongoing organization of continental faunas. The phylogenetic and biogeographical hypotheses presented here provide an historical framework to further pursue research on the diversification and assembly of the New World herpetofauna
Events, processes, and the time of a killing
The paper proposes a novel solution to the problem of the time of a killing (ToK), which persistently besets theories of act-individuation. The solution proposed claims to expose a crucial wrong-headed assumption in the debate, according to which ToK is essentially a problem of locating some event that corresponds to the killing. The alternative proposal put forward here turns on recognizing a separate category of dynamic occurents, viz. processes. The paper does not aim to mount a comprehensive defense of process ontology, relying instead on extant defenses. The primary aim is rather to put process ontology to work in diagnosing the current state of play over ToK, and indeed in solving it
Mean curvature flow in a Ricci flow background
Following work of Ecker, we consider a weighted Gibbons-Hawking-York
functional on a Riemannian manifold-with-boundary. We compute its variational
properties and its time derivative under Perelman's modified Ricci flow. The
answer has a boundary term which involves an extension of Hamilton's Harnack
expression for the mean curvature flow in Euclidean space. We also derive the
evolution equations for the second fundamental form and the mean curvature,
under a mean curvature flow in a Ricci flow background. In the case of a
gradient Ricci soliton background, we discuss mean curvature solitons and
Huisken monotonicity.Comment: final versio
Spectral statistics of disordered metals in the presence of several Aharonov-Bohm fluxes
The form factor for spectral correlations in a diffusive metal is calculated
in the presence of several Aharonov-Bohm fluxes. When the fluxes are
equal, the correlations are universal functions of where is
the dimensionless conductance and is the number of applied fluxes. This
explains recent flux dependence of the correlations found numerically at the
metal-insulator transition.Comment: 3 pages, Latex, 1 figure, to appear in Phys. Rev. B Rapid Com
Parity Effects in Eigenvalue Correlators, Parametric and Crossover Correlators in Random Matrix Models: Application to Mesoscopic systems
This paper summarizes some work I've been doing on eigenvalue correlators of
Random Matrix Models which show some interesting behaviour. First we consider
matrix models with gaps in there spectrum or density of eigenvalues. The
density-density correlators of these models depend on whether N, where N is the
size of the matrix, takes even or odd values. The fact that this dependence
persists in the large N thermodynamic limit is an unusual property and may have
consequences in the study of one electron effects in mesoscopic systems.
Secondly, we study the parametric and cross correlators of the Harish
Chandra-Itzykson-Zuber matrix model. The analytic expressions determine how the
correlators change as a parameter (e.g. the strength of a perturbation in the
hamiltonian of the chaotic system or external magnetic field on a sample of
material) is varied. The results are relevant for the conductance fluctuations
in disordered mesoscopic systems.Comment: 12 pages, Latex, 2 Figure
Universal Level dynamics of Complex Systems
. We study the evolution of the distribution of eigenvalues of a
matrix subject to a random perturbation drawn from (i) a generalized Gaussian
ensemble (ii) a non-Gaussian ensemble with a measure variable under the change
of basis. It turns out that, in the case (i), a redefinition of the parameter
governing the evolution leads to a Fokker-Planck equation similar to the one
obtained when the perturbation is taken from a standard Gaussian ensemble (with
invariant measure). This equivalence can therefore help us to obtain the
correlations for various physically-significant cases modeled by generalized
Gaussian ensembles by using the already known correlations for standard
Gaussian ensembles.
For large -values, our results for both cases (i) and (ii) are similar to
those obtained for Wigner-Dyson gas as well as for the perturbation taken from
a standard Gaussian ensemble. This seems to suggest the independence of
evolution, in thermodynamic limit, from the nature of perturbation involved as
well as the initial conditions and therefore universality of dynamics of the
eigenvalues of complex systems.Comment: 11 Pages, Latex Fil
JWalk: a tool for lazy, systematic testing of java classes by design introspection and user interaction
Popular software testing tools, such as JUnit, allow frequent retesting of modified code; yet the manually created test scripts are often seriously incomplete. A unit-testing tool called JWalk has therefore been developed to address the need for systematic unit testing within the context of agile methods. The tool operates directly on the compiled code for Java classes and uses a new lazy method for inducing the changing design of a class on the fly. This is achieved partly through introspection, using Java’s reflection capability, and partly through interaction with the user, constructing and saving test oracles on the fly. Predictive rules reduce the number of oracle values that must be confirmed by the tester. Without human intervention, JWalk performs bounded exhaustive exploration of the class’s method protocols and may be directed to explore the space of algebraic constructions, or the intended design state-space of the tested class. With some human interaction, JWalk performs up to the equivalent of fully automated state-based testing, from a specification that was acquired incrementally

Anomalous flux-flow dynamics in layered type-II superconductors at low temperatures
Low-temperature dissipation due to vortex motion in strongly anisotropic
type-II superconductors with a moderate disorder () is shown to be determined by the Zener-type transitions between
the localized electronic states in the vortex core. Statistics of these levels
is described by the random matrix ensemble of the class C defined recently by
Atland and Zirnbauer [cond-mat/9602137], so the vortex motion leads naturally
to the new example of a parametric statistics of energy levels. The flux-flow
conductivity is a bit lower than the quasiclassical one and {\it
grows} slowly with the increase of the electric field.Comment: 4 pages, Revte
