Probing the (H3-H4)(2) histone tetramer structure using pulsed EPR spectroscopy combined with site-directed spin labelling
The (H3-H4)2 histone tetramer forms the central core of nucleosomes and, as such, plays a prominent role in assembly, disassembly and positioning of nucleosomes. Despite its fundamental role in chromatin, the tetramer has received little structural investigation. Here, through the use of pulsed electron-electron double resonance spectroscopy coupled with site-directed spin labelling, we survey the structure of the tetramer in solution. We find that tetramer is structurally more heterogeneous on its own than when sequestered in the octamer or nucleosome. In particular, while the central region including the H3-H3′ interface retains a structure similar to that observed in nucleosomes, other regions such as the H3 αN helix display increased structural heterogeneity. Flexibility of the H3 αN helix in the free tetramer also illustrates the potential for post-translational modifications to alter the structure of this region and mediate interactions with histone chaperones. The approach described here promises to prove a powerful system for investigating the structure of additional assemblies of histones with other important factors in chromatin assembly/fluidity

Double-impulse magnetic focusing of launched cold atoms.
We have theoretically investigated three-dimensional focusing of a launched cloud of cold atoms using a pair of magnetic lens pulses (the alternate-gradient method). Individual lenses focus radially and defocus axially or vice versa. The performance of the two possible pulse sequences are compared and found to be ideal for loading both 'pancake' and 'sausage' shaped magnetic/optical microtraps. It is shown that focusing aberrations are considerably smaller for double-impulse magnetic lenses compared to single-impulse magnetic lenses. An analysis of clouds focused by the double-impulse technique is presented
A PRELIMINARY FEASIBILITY FOR ESTABLISHING A MULTI-SPECIES MEAT PROCESSING PLANT IN SOUTHWESTERN NORTH DAKOTA
The number of small commodity livestock slaughter plants in the Upper Northern Plains region continues to decline. Significant factors contributing to this decline include: 1) pressure to consolidate, thereby capturing economies of scale; 2) relatively stringent federal inspection specifications, along with; 3) HACCP (Hazardous Analysis Critical Control Points) requirements. At the same time, consumer demand (markets) for specialty, selected, and exotic meats appears to be growing. For example, the recent market successes in Europe evidenced by the North American Bison Cooperative based in New Rockford, North Dakota. Several alternative livestock producer groups have emerged which include lamb, ratite, elk, deer, goat, poultry, rabbit, specialty beef, and organic livestock. These groups have expressed a need for slaughter and processing facilities to meet market demand. The economic question which then becomes foremost to developing a viable business enterprise is: "What is the critical threshold volume (CTV) of product required to succeed in terms of economic profit?" Specialty livestock is relatively new and production volume small in comparison to established commodity livestock such as cattle or hogs. Chandra X-Ray Study of Galactic Supernova Remnant G299.2-2.9
We report on observations of the Galactic supernova remnant (SNR)
G299.22.9 with the {\it Chandra X-Ray Observatory}. The high resolution
images with {\it Chandra} resolve the X-ray-bright knots, shell, and diffuse
emission extending beyond the bright shell. Interior to the X-ray shell is
faint diffuse emission occupying the central regions of the SNR.
Spatially-resolved spectroscopy indicates a large foreground absorption
( 3.5 10 cm), which supports a
relatively distant location ( 5 kpc) for the SNR. The blast wave is
encountering a highly inhomogeneous ambient medium with the densities ranging
over more than an order of magnitude ( 0.1 4 cm).
Assuming the distance of 5 kpc, we derive a Sedov age of
4500 yr and an explosion energy of 1.6 10
ergs. The ambient density structure and the overall morphology suggest that
G299.22.9 may be a limb-brightened partial shell extending to 7 pc
radius surrounded by fainter emission extending beyond that to a radius of
9 pc. This suggests the SNR exploded in a region of space where there is
a density gradient whose direction lies roughly along the line of sight. The
faint central region shows strong line emission from heavy elements of Si and
Fe, which is caused by the presence of the overabundant stellar ejecta there.
We find no evidence for stellar ejecta enriched in light elements of O and Ne.
The observed abundance structure of the metal-rich ejecta supports a Type Ia

Persistence effects in deterministic diffusion
In systems which exhibit deterministic diffusion, the gross parameter
dependence of the diffusion coefficient can often be understood in terms of
random walk models. Provided the decay of correlations is fast enough, one can
ignore memory effects and approximate the diffusion coefficient according to
dimensional arguments. By successively including the effects of one and two
steps of memory on this approximation, we examine the effects of
``persistence'' on the diffusion coefficients of extended two-dimensional
billiard tables and show how to properly account for these effects, using walks
in which a particle undergoes jumps in different directions with probabilities
