    Stability study and time resolution measurement of Straw Tube detectors

    Full text link
    Straw tube detectors are single wire proportional counters that are widely used as a tracking device. We have carried out R&\&D with a straw tube detector prototype. The motivation of this work is to study the stability of the performance in terms of gain and energy resolution of the straw tube detectors under high rate radiation. Two different methods are incorporated to perform this study. The gain and energy resolution of the detector are studied along with its variation with ambient temperature and pressure. X-ray from a radioactive source is used to irradiate the detector and the same source is also used to monitor the energy spectra simultaneously for calculation of gain. Variation of the gain and energy resolution of the straw tube detector under X-ray irradiation in Ar/CO2_2 gas mixture is discussed in this article. We have also estimated the time resolution of the straw tube detectors that can be best achieved with cosmic rays as trigger for the same gas mixture. The details of the measurement process and the experimental results are presented in this article

    Measurement of the K+μ+νμγK^+\rightarrow{\mu^+}{\nu_{\mu}}{\gamma} decay form factors in the OKA experiment

    Full text link
    A precise measurement of the vector and axial-vector form factors difference FVFAF_V-F_A in the K+μ+νμγK^+\rightarrow{\mu^+}{\nu_{\mu}}{\gamma} decay is presented. About 95K events of K+μ+νμγK^+\rightarrow{\mu^+}{\nu_{\mu}}{\gamma} are selected in the OKA experiment. The result is FVFA=0.134±0.021(stat)±0.027(syst)F_V-F_A=0.134\pm0.021(stat)\pm0.027(syst). Both errors are smaller than in the previous FVFAF_V-F_A measurements.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figure

    Search for Axionlike and Scalar Particles with the NA64 Experiment

    Get PDF
    We carried out a model-independent search for light scalar (s) and pseudoscalar axionlike (a) particles that couple to two photons by using the high-energy CERN SPS H4 electron beam. The new particles, if they exist, could be produced through the Primakoff effect in interactions of hard bremsstrahlung photons generated by 100 GeV electrons in the NA64 active dump with virtual photons provided by the nuclei of the dump. The a(s) would penetrate the downstream HCAL module, serving as shielding, and would be observed either through their a(s)γγa(s)\to\gamma \gamma decay in the rest of the HCAL detector or as events with large missing energy if the a(s) decays downstream of the HCAL. This method allows for the probing the a(s) parameter space, including those from generic axion models, inaccessible to previous experiments. No evidence of such processes has been found from the analysis of the data corresponding to 2.84×10112.84\times10^{11} electrons on target allowing to set new limits on the a(s)γγa(s)\gamma\gamma-coupling strength for a(s) masses below 55 MeV.Comment: This publication is dedicated to the memory of our colleague Danila Tlisov. 7 pages, 5 figures, revised version accepted for publication in Phys. A precision measurement of direct CP violation in the decay of neutral kaons into two pions

    Get PDF
    The direct CP violation parameter Re(epsilon'/epsilon) has been measured from the decay rates of neutral kaons into two pions using the NA48 detector at the CERN SPS. The 2001 running period was devoted to collecting additional data under varied conditions compared to earlier years (1997-99). The new data yield the result: Re(epsilon'/epsilon) = (13.7 +/- 3.1) times 10^{-4}. Combining this result with that published from the 1997, 98 and 99 data, an overall value of Re(epsilon'/epsilon) = (14.7 +/- 2.2) times 10^{-4} is obtained from the NA48 experiment.Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures, to be published in Physics Letters

    Measurement of the branching ratios of the decays Xi0 --> Sigma+ e- nubar and anti-Xi0 --> anti-Sigma+ e+ nu

    Full text link
    From 56 days of data taking in 2002, the NA48/1 experiment observed 6316 Xi0 --> Sigma+ e- nubar candidates (with the subsequent Sigma+ --> p pi0 decay) and 555 anti-Xi0 --> anti-Sigma+ e+ nu candidates with background contamination of 215+-44 and 136+-8 events, respectively. From these samples, the branching ratios BR(Xi0 --> Sigma+ e- nubar)= (2.51+-0.03stat+-0.09syst)E(-4) and BR(anti-Xi0 --> anti-Sigma+ e+ nu)= (2.55+-0.14stat+-0.10syst)E(-4) were measured allowing the determination of the CKM matrix element |Vus| = 0.209+0.023-0.028. Using the Particle Data Group average for |Vus| obtained in semileptonic kaon decays, we measured the ratio g1/f1 = 1.20+-0.05 of the axial-vector to vector form factors.Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures Submitted to Phys.Lett.

    A new measurement of direct CP violation in two pion decays of the neutral kaon

    Get PDF
    The NA48 experiment at CERN has performed a new measurement of direct CP violation, based on data taken in 1997 by simultaneously collecting K_L and K_S decays into pi0pi0 and pi+pi-. The result for the CP violating parameter Re(epsilon'/epsilon) is (18.5 +/- 4.5(stat)} +/- 5.8 (syst))x10^{-4}.Comment: 18 pages, 6 figure

    Measurement of the branching ratio of the decay Ξ0Σ+μνˉμ\Xi^{0}\rightarrow \Sigma^{+} \mu^{-} \bar{\nu}_{\mu}

    Full text link
    From the 2002 data taking with a neutral kaon beam extracted from the CERN-SPS, the NA48/1 experiment observed 97 Ξ0Σ+μνˉμ\Xi^{0}\rightarrow \Sigma^{+} \mu^{-} \bar{\nu}_{\mu} candidates with a background contamination of 30.8±4.230.8 \pm 4.2 events. From this sample, the BR(Ξ0Σ+μνˉμ\Xi^{0}\rightarrow \Sigma^{+} \mu^{-} \bar{\nu}_{\mu}) is measured to be (2.17±0.32stat±0.17syst)×106(2.17 \pm 0.32_{\mathrm{stat}}\pm 0.17_{\mathrm{syst}})\times10^{-6}

    Full text link
    The NA62 experiment will begin taking data in 2015. Its primary purpose is a 10% measurement of the branching ratio of the ultrarare kaon decay K+π+ννˉK^+ \to \pi^+ \nu \bar{ \nu }, using the decay in flight of kaons in an unseparated beam with momentum 75 GeV/c.The detector and analysis technique are described here.Comment: 8 pages for proceedings of 50 Years of CP
