    A renormalisation-group treatment of two-body scattering

    Nonrelativistic two-body scattering by a short-ranged potential is studied using the renormalisation group. Two fixed points are identified: a trivial one and one describing systems with a bound state at zero energy. The eigenvalues of the linearised renormalisation group are used to assign a systematic power-counting to terms in the potential near each of these fixed points.     Adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) elevates systolic blood pressure (SBP) and lowers plasma reactive nitrogen intermediates in rats. We assessed the ability of NO donation from isosorbide dinitrate (ISDN) to prevent or reverse the hypertension caused by ACTH. In the prevention study, male Sprague Dawley rats were treated with ACTH (0.2 mg/kg/day) or saline control for 8 days, with either concurrent ISDN (100 mg/kg/day) via the drinking water or water alone. Animals receiving ISDN via the drinking water were provided with nitrate-free water for 8 hours every day. In the reversal study ISDN (100 mg/kg) or vehicle was given as a single oral dose on day 8. SBP was measured daily by the indirect tail-cuff method in conscious, restrained rats. ACTH caused a significant increase in SBP compared with saline (P < 0.0015). In the prevention study, chronic administration of ISDN (100 mg/kg/day) did not affect the SBP in either group. In the reversal study, ISDN significantly lowered SBP in ACTH-treated rats at 1 and 2.5 hours (132 +/- 3 mmHg (1 h) and 131 +/- 2 mmHg (2.5 h) versus 143 +/- 3 mmHg (0 h), P < 0.002), but not to control levels. It had no effect in control (saline treated) rats. In conclusion, the lowering of SBP by NO donation is consistent with the notion that ACTH-induced hypertension involves an impaired bioavailability or action of NO in vivo

    The program called Uninterrupted Sustained Silent Reading (USSR or SSR) is widely advocated, sometimes under other names (Moore, Jones, and Miller, 1980), as a program which should help foster positive attitudes toward reading as well as help improve reading achievement (Hunt, 1972; Mork, 1972; McCracken, 1971; Noland, 1976). USSR incorporates attributes mentioned by many writers as valuable for the development of favorable attitudes and increased achievement: a specific time set aside for reading at regular intervals; a large quantity and wide variety of reading materials available; provision of a role model in that the teacher and other adults in the school show their value of reading by participating along with the children; encouragement to read by these adults; a pleasant, relaxed atmosphere; lack of pressure to report on what has been read; and the opportunity to share information about books read, if desired. Many authorities believe that these ingredients cannot fail to produce more favorable attitudes toward reading as well as increased reading achievement

    Losing Weight: A KECK Spectroscopic Survey of the Massive Cluster of Galaxies RX J1347-1145

    We present a sample of 47 spectroscopically confirmed members of RX J1347-1145, the most luminous X-ray cluster of galaxies discovered to date. With two exceptions, all the galaxies in this sample have red B-R colors and red spectral indices, with spectra similar to old local ellipticals. Using all 47 cluster members, we derive a mean redshift of 0.4509\pm 0.003, and a velocity dispersion of 910\pm130 km/sec, which corresponds to a virial mass of 4.4 x 10^{14} h^{-1} Solar masses with an harmonic radius of 380 h^{-1} kpc. The derived total dynamical mass is marginally consistent with that deduced from the cluster's X-ray emission based on the analysis of ROSAT/ASCA images (Schindler et al. 1997), but not consistent with the more recent X-ray analyses of Allen (2000), Ettori, Allen & Fabian (2001) and Allen, Schmidt & Fabian (2002). Furthermore, the dynamical mass is significantly smaller than that derived from weak lensing (Fischer & Tyson 1997) and from strong lensing (Sahu et al. 1998). We propose that these various discrepant mass estimates may be understood if RX J1347-1145 is the product of two clusters caught in the act of merging in a direction perpendicular to the line of sight, although there is no evidence from the galaxy redshift distribution supporting this hypothesis. Even with this hypothesis, a significant part of the extremely high X-ray luminosity must still arise from non-virialized, presumably shocked, gas. Finally, we report the serendipitous discovery of a lensed background galaxy at z=4.083 which will put strong constraints on the lensing mass determination once its counter-image is securely identified.Comment: Minor changes to conform to version accepted by Ap

    Calibration of the CH and CN Variations Among Main Sequence Stars in M71 and in M13

    An analysis of the CN and CH band strengths measured in a large sample of M71 and M13 main sequence stars by Cohen (1999a,b) is undertaken using synthetic spectra to quantify the underlying C and N abundances. In the case of M71 it is found that the observed CN and CH band strengths are best matched by the {\it{identical}} C/N/O abundances which fit the bright giants, implying: 1) little if any mixing is taking place during red giant branch ascent in M71, and 2) a substantial component of the C and N abundance inhomogeneities is in place before the main sequence turn-off. The unlikelihood of mixing while on the main sequence requires an explanation for the abundance variations which lies outside the present stars (primordial inhomogeneities or intra-cluster self enrichment). For M13 it is shown that the 3883\AA CN bands are too weak to be measured in the spectra for any reasonable set of expected compositions. A similar situation exists for CH as well. However, two of the more luminous program stars do appear to have C abundances considerably greater than those found among the bright giants thereby suggesting deep mixing has taken place on the M13 red giant branch.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication by A

    We present the sample for an abundance analysis of 25 members of M71 with luminosities ranging from the red giant branch tip to the upper main sequence. The spectra are of high dispersion and of high precision. We describe the observing strategy and determine the stellar parameters for the sample stars using both broad band colors and fits of Hα\alpha profiles. The derived stellar parameters agree with those from the Yale2^2 stellar evolutionary tracks to within 50 -- 100K for a fixed log g, which is within the level of the uncertainties.Comment: Minor changes to conform to version accepted for publication, with several new figures (Paper 1 of a pair

    Biozonation of Deep-Water Lithoherms and Associated Hardgrounds in the Northeastern Straits of Florida

    Elongated carbonate mounds ( lithoherms ) oriented parallel to prevailing northerly bottom currents at moderate depths (500-700 m) along the western margin of the Little Bahama Bank exhibit a consistent faunal zonation characterized by attached, suspension-feeding invertebrates. The four most abundant macroepibenthic groups (alcyonarians, crinoids, sponges and stylasterid hydrocorals) dominate all hard substrates examined except upcurrent ends and crests of lithoherms. We recognize three faunal zones on these mounds: a Coral Zone (Lophelia prolifera) restricted to the upcurrent end; a Zoanthid Zone (?Gerardia sp.) along upcurrent crests, and a Crinoid/Alcyonarian Zone along lithoherm flanks and downstream crests. Taxa characteristic of the latter also occur on surrounding, low-relief hardgrounds but are accompanied by additional taxa usually absent from mounds. Intervening unconsolidated sediment is largely barren. Biozonation appears chiefly dependent on current flow regime and secondarily on substrate. The observed zonation occurs over a much smaller areal scale than previously reported for deep-water (non-hydrothermal) hard bottoms. Abrupt, small-scale faunal zonation can no longer automatically be considered as evidence of a shallow-water environment in interpreting fossil assemblages

    Knowledge-Attitudes-Practices About Malaria Among Communities in Southern Benin

    Malaria still remains the main public health problem in Benin. We explored the determinants that influenced malaria treatment as well as protective behaviors, to generate a framework of useful ideas as alternative strategies against malaria. A cross-sectional survey of the knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) was conducted at Hozin, Vakon and Agblangandan districts in southern region of Benin. Descriptive statistics were computed and mixed logistic regression helped evaluating the relationship between frequency of each category of severity of malaria and sex group, educational level, treatment, means of self-protection against mosquitoes and identification of the cause of malaria. A significant proportion 750 (81.3%) (p&lt;0.001) of participants stated that malaria was caused by mosquitoes. The respondents who mentioned sun as the cause of malaria, have trivialized more malaria in a proportion of about 59.30% (OR=2.67 [95% CI 1.61-4.44]) followed by those who have reported the cause of body weakness (43.68%) (OR=2.97 [95% CI 1.68-5.28]). Poor knowledge justifies the trivialization of the disease and poor management of malaria control means. National Malaria Control Programs should improve access to education, especially for women and could help improving prevention and control behaviours against malaria in communities

    Multiple Object Fiber Optics Spectrograph Feed For The Hale Telescope

    A preliminary design of a fiber-optics feed for the prime-focus spectrograph of the Hale telescope using computer controlled movable fiber has been completed and a test of a proto-type configuration carried out. The complete design will divide a 76mm square field into 10 strips and will place two movable fibers in each strip. The fiber pickups, which are moved by stepper-motor driven lead screws, may be placed anywhere in the strip subject to the limitation that they not pass each other. The prototype consisted of a single strip with two fibers operated with manual input to the stepper motors. In tests performed at the 5 meter Hale telescope in April of 1981 spec-tra of two bright 0 stars (B = 8.5 mag) separated by 5 arc minutes were photographed with a 3 minute exposure using a 1200 line/mm grating and unbaked 103a0 plates. The performance of the prototype configuration was within a factor of two of the unmodified prime-focus spec-trograph indicating a potential for a ten-fold increase in the effective utilization of the telescope for spectrographic survey work when fitted with the 20-fiber feed

    Molecular pathology of sarcomas: concepts and clinical implications

    The molecular genetic changes that have been described in sarcomas over the past era have aided our understanding of their pathogenesis. The majority of sarcomas carry nonspecific genetic changes within a background of a complex karyotype. These constitute the challenges in sarcoma research for unraveling a putative multistep genetic model, such as for chondrosarcoma, and finding targets for therapeutic strategies. Approximately 15–20% of mesenchymal tumors carry a specific translocation within a relatively simple karyotype. The resulting fusion products act either as transcription factors upregulating genes responsible for tumor growth, as for instance in Ewing sarcoma, or translocate a highly active promoter in front of an oncogene driving tumor formation, as for instance in aneurysmal bone cyst. In addition, a small subset of mesenchymal tumors have specific somatic mutations driving oncogenesis. The specific genetic changes unraveled so far had great impact on the classification of bone and soft tissue tumors. In addition, these changes can assist the pathologist in the differential diagnosis of some of these entities, especially within the groups of small blue round cell tumors and spindle cell tumors, if performed in specialized centers. While a putative association between certain fusion products and outcome is still under debate, the role of predicting response of targeted therapy has been well established for KIT and PDGFRA mutations in gastrointestinal stromal tumors
