Advances in DIY Health and Wellbeing
The choice of consumer healthcare and wellbeing technologies has never been greater, and the introduction of consumer wearable technologies and inexpensive sensor kits means that developing bespoke personalized health devices is now possible. For example, there is a growing community making DIY diabetes technologies and the trend is spreading to other health areas where people want to design, customize, manufacture and disseminate their own DIY health and wellbeing technologies. Although the CHI community has started to investigate these trends, the pace that motivated open-source health 'makers' and 'hackers' are developing technologies means that there is a need to bring together researchers to discuss the HCI implications of this changing landscape
A Regulatory Model for Context-Aware Abstract Framework

Spain, June 1-4, 2010.This paper presents a general framework to define a context aware application and analyzes social guarantees to be considered to develop this kind of applications following legal assumptions as privacy, human rights, etc. We
present a review of legal issues in biometric user identification where several
legal aspects have been developed in European Union regulation and a general
framework to define context aware applications. As main result, paper presents
a legal framework to be taken into account in any context-based application to
ensure a harmonious and coherent system for the protection of fundamental

Predicting global usages of resources endowed with local policies
The effective usages of computational resources are a primary concern of
up-to-date distributed applications. In this paper, we present a methodology to
reason about resource usages (acquisition, release, revision, ...), and
therefore the proposed approach enables to predict bad usages of resources.
Keeping in mind the interplay between local and global information occurring in
the application-resource interactions, we model resources as entities with
local policies and global properties governing the overall interactions.
Formally, our model takes the shape of an extension of pi-calculus with
primitives to manage resources. We develop a Control Flow Analysis computing a

Multimodality in Pervasive Environment
Future pervasive environments are expected to immerse users in a consistent
world of probes, sensors and actuators. Multimodal interfaces combined
with social computing interactions and high-performance networking can foster a
new generation of pervasive environments. However, much work is still needed to
harness the full potential of multimodal interaction. In this paper we discuss some
short-term research goals, including advanced techniques for joining and correlating
multiple data flows, each with its own approximations and uncertainty models.
Also, we discuss some longer term objectives, like providing users with a mental
model of their own multimodal "aura", enabling them to collaborate with the network
infrastructure toward inter-modal correlation of multimodal inputs, much in
the same way as the human brain extracts a single self-conscious experience from
multiple sensorial data flows
Can Electronic Notebooks Enhance the Classroom?
We are interested in prototyping future computing environments that will enhance the classroom experience and empower both teacher and student. In this paper, we describe the Classroom 2000 project at Georgia Tech which is integrating personal and group pen-based technology, audio services and the World-Wide Web to record in-class interactions for later review
Challenges in context-aware mobile language learning: the MASELTOV approach
Smartphones, as highly portable networked computing devices with embedded sensors including GPS receivers, are ideal platforms to support context-aware language learning. They can enable learning when the user is en-gaged in everyday activities while out and about, complementing formal language classes. A significant challenge, however, has been the practical implementation of services that can accurately identify and make use of context, particularly location, to offer meaningful language learning recommendations to users. In this paper we review a range of approaches to identifying context to support mobile language learning. We consider how dynamically changing aspects of context may influence the quality of recommendations presented to a user. We introduce the MASELTOV project’s use of context awareness combined with a rules-based recommendation engine to present suitable learning content to recent immigrants in urban areas; a group that may benefit from contextual support and can use the city as a learning environment
Active Coordination in Ad Hoc Networks
Abstract. The increasing ubiquity of communicating mobile devices and vastly different mobile application needs have led to the emergence of middleware models for ad hoc networks that simplify application pro-gramming. One such system, EgoSpaces, addresses specific needs of indi-vidual applications, allowing them to define what data is included in their operating context using declarative specifications constraining properties of data, agents that own the data, hosts on which those agents are run-ning, and attributes of the ad hoc network. In the resulting coordination model, application agents interact with a dynamically changing environ-ment through a set of views, or custom defined projections of the set of data present in the surrounding ad hoc network. This paper builds on EgoSpaces by allowing agents to assign behaviors to their personal-ized views. Behaviors consist of actions that are automatically performed in response to specified changes in a view. Behaviors discussed in this paper encompass reactive programming, transparent data migration, au-tomatic data duplication, and event capture. Formal semantic definitions and programming examples are given for each behavior.
The APEX framework: prototyping of ubiquitous environments based on Petri Nets
The user experience of ubiquitous environments is a determining factor in their success. The characteristics of such systems must be explored as early as possible to anticipate potential user problems, and to reduce the cost of redesign. However, the development of early prototypes to be evaluated in the target environment can be disruptive
to the ongoing system and therefore unacceptable. This paper reports on an ongoing effort to explore how model-based rapid prototyping of ubiquitous
environments might be used to avoid actual deployment while still enabling users to interact with a representation of the system. The paper describes APEX, a framework that brings together an existing 3D Application Server with CPN Tools. APEX-based prototypes enable users to navigate a virtual world simulation of the envisaged ubiquitous environment.

Comparative Advantage and Risk Premia in Labor Markets
Using the Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP), we document a significant and positive association between earnings risk (both permanent and transitory) and the level of earnings across 21 industries. We propose an equilibrium framework to analyze the interplay between earnings volatility and the distribution of skills across workers in determining a relationship between earnings and risk. We use the model to decompose how much of the empirical correlation represents compensation for risk and how much represents selection. The positive association between permanent risk and earnings is compensation for risk, but selection is responsible for the observed relationship between temporary risk and the level of earnings
