Kaolin shear thickening fluid reinforced UHMWPE composites for protective clothing
This study reports the designing and reinforcing of impact resistant textile composites using kaolin based shear thickening colloidal dispersions as the filler material. The reinforced fabric is targeted for the chest protection of cricketers. A shear thickening fluid (STF) has been prepared using kaolin and glycerol, at kaolin volume fractions of 34% and 38%. A combination of mixing techniques including mechanical blending and ultra-sonication are used to prepare the colloidal dispersions. Ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) woven fabric structures are reinforced with the STF. The fabric coated with STF are then measured for their flexibility, and impact resistance using Shirley stiffness tester and a series of modified drop tower tests respectively. Kaolin STF at 38% volume fraction shows best results in impregnated fabric samples. STF reinforced fabrics provide better impact resistance with improved moisture absorption and flexibility in comparison to the conventional chest guard material

Reduced tillage, but not organic matter input, increased nematode diversity and food web stability in European longâterm field experiments
Soil nematode communities and food web indices can inform about the complexity, nutrient flows and decomposition pathways of soil food webs, reflecting soil quality. Relative abundance of nematode feeding and lifeâhistory groups are used for calculating food web indices, i.e., maturity index (MI), enrichment index (EI), structure index (SI) and channel index (CI). Molecular methods to study nematode communities potentially offer advantages compared to traditional methods in terms of resolution, throughput, cost and time. In spite of such advantages, molecular data have not often been adopted so far to assess the effects of soil management on nematode communities and to calculate these food web indices. Here, we used highâthroughput amplicon sequencing to investigate the effects of tillage (conventional vs. reduced) and organic matter addition (low vs. high) on nematode communities and food web indices in 10 European longâterm field experiments and we assessed the relationship between nematode communities and soil parameters. We found that nematode communities were more strongly affected by tillage than by organic matter addition. Compared to conventional tillage, reduced tillage increased nematode diversity (23% higher Shannon diversity index), nematode community stability (12% higher MI), structure (24% higher SI), and the fungal decomposition channel (59% higher CI), and also the number of herbivorous nematodes (70% higher). Total and labile organic carbon, available K and microbial parameters explained nematode community structure. Our findings show that nematode communities are sensitive indicators of soil quality and that molecular profiling of nematode communities has the potential to reveal the effects of soil management on soil quality
Jarosite in Gale Crater, Mars: The Importance of Temporal and Spatial Variability and Implications for Habitiability
The Curiosity rover has recently found evidence for small amounts of jarosite, a ferric sulfate, in the Pahrump Hills region at the base of Aeolis Mons (Mount Sharp), Gale crater. While jarosite has been described previously at other locations on Mars, including several sites at Meridiani Planum (explored by the Opportunity rover; and Mawrth Vallis (by remote MRO-CRISM observations; this is the first identification in Gale. Jarosite is interpreted to be a mineral indicator of acidic conditions (pH less than 4; on Earth, it is most commonly found in acid rock-drainage or acid sulfate soil environments. However, jarosite has also been described from a number of terrestrial environments where widespread acidic conditions are not prevalent. As a case study, we describe here an occurrence of sedimentary pyrite nodules that have been variably oxidized in situ to gypsum, schwertmannite, K-/Na-jarosite and iron oxides in a polar desert environment on Devon Island, Nunavut, Canada. Remarkably, these nodules occur in loosely consolidated carbonate sediments, which would have required a higher pH environment at their time of formation and deposition. Thus, acidic conditions may only exist at a small (sub-cm) scale or in a restricted temporal window in an otherwise well-buffered environment. On Devon Island, the jarosite occurs in the most oxidized nodules and is never associated directly with pyrite. Schwertmannite, a metastable iron oxyhydroxysulfate that can form at pH higher than that required for jarosite, occurs in association with partially oxidized pyrite. The paragenetic sequence observed here suggests initial formation of schwertmannite and late-stage precipitation of jarosite in restricted micro-environments, possibly forming via transformation of an amorphous schwertmannite-like phase. While the carbonate environment on Devon Island differs significantly from that of Gale crater, i.e., where we find predominantly basaltic sedimentary rocks, this terrestrial analog provides insight into the significance of jarosite with respect to habitability. For example, the variable abundance of jarosite on Mars and possibly in Gale crater points to potentially localized conditions favorable for jarosite formation. Interestingly, small amounts of sulfide minerals have also been detected by Curiosity at Yellowknife Bay; oxidation of sulfide minerals at Pahrump could explain the presence of small amounts of jarosite. The iron-rich rocks at Pahrump may also represent relatively altered basaltic sediments, or they could be sediments that were altered further by a fluid with a distinct, possibly more acidic, composition. In addition, the abundance of iron-rich amorphous material in Gale rocks allows for the possibility that pre-cursor, iron-bearing phases transform to jarosite post-depositionally. Thus, the occurrence of jarosite at Pahrump could reflect changing paleoenvironmental conditions, though continuing study of its context and textural relationships should provide a fuller understanding of the significance of this mineral to past fluid compositions and past habitability at Gale crater
The band structure of BeTe - a combined experimental and theoretical study
Using angle-resolved synchrotron-radiation photoemission spectroscopy we have
determined the dispersion of the valence bands of BeTe(100) along ,
i.e. the [100] direction. The measurements are analyzed with the aid of a
first-principles calculation of the BeTe bulk band structure as well as of the
photoemission peaks as given by the momentum conserving bulk transitions.
Taking the calculated unoccupied bands as final states of the photoemission
process, we obtain an excellent agreement between experimental and calculated
spectra and a clear interpretation of almost all measured bands. In contrast,
the free electron approximation for the final states fails to describe the BeTe
bulk band structure along properly.Comment: 21 pages plus 4 figure
Identification of the PS1 Thr147Ile Variant in a Family with Very Early Onset Dementia and Expressive Aphasia
Background: Early onset dementias have variable clinical presentations and are often difficult to diagnose. We established a family pedigree that demonstrated consistent recurrence of very early onset dementia in successive generations.
Objective and Method: In order to refine the diagnosis in this family, we sequenced the exomes of two affected family members and relied on discrete filtering to identify disease genes and the corresponding causal variants.
Results: Among the 720 nonsynonymous single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) shared by two affected members, we found a C to T transition that gives rise to a Thr147Ile missense substitution in the presenilin 1 (PS1) protein. The presence of this same mutation in a French early-onset Alzheimerâs disease family, other affected members of the family, and the predicted high pathogenicity of the substitution strongly suggest that it is the causal variant. In addition to exceptionally young age of onset, we also observed significant limb spasticity and early loss of speech, concurrent with progression of dementia in affected family members. These findings extend the clinical presentation associated with the Thr147Ile variant. Lastly, one member with the Thr147Ile variant was treated with the PKC epsilon activator, bryostatin, in a compassionate use trial after successful FDA review. Initial improvements with this treatment were unexpectedly clear, including return of some speech, increased attentional focus, ability to swallow, and some apparent decrease in limb spasticity.
Conclusions: Our findings confirm the role of the PS1 Thr147Ile substitution in Alzheimerâs disease and expand the clinical phenotype to include expressive aphasia and very early onset of dementia
Gaugino Condensation in M-theory on S^1/Z_2
In the low energy limit of for M-theory on S^1/Z_2, we calculate the gaugino
condensate potential in four dimensions using the background solutions due to
Horava. We show that this potential is free of delta-function singularities and
has the same form as the potential in the weakly coupled heterotic string. A
general flux quantization rule for the three-form field of M-theory on S^1/Z_2
is given and checked in certain limiting cases. This rule is used to fix the
free parameter in the potential originating from a zero mode of the form field.
Finally, we calculate soft supersymmetry breaking terms. We find that
corrections to the Kahler potential and the gauge kinetic function, which can
be large in the strongly coupled region, contribute significantly to certain
soft terms. In particular, for supersymmetry breaking in the T-modulus
direction, the small values of gaugino masses and trilinear couplings that
occur in the weakly coupled, large radius regime are enhanced to order m_3/2 in
M-theory. The scalar soft masses remain small even, in the strong coupling
M-theory limit.Comment: 20 pages, LATE
Mars Atmospheric Escape Recorded by H, C and O Isotope Ratios in Carbon Dioxide and Water Measured by the Sam Tunable Laser Spectrometer on the Curiosity Rover
Stable isotope ratios in C, H, N, O and S are powerful indicators of a wide variety of planetary geophysical processes that can identify origin, transport, temperature history, radiation exposure, atmospheric escape, environmental habitability and biological activity [2]. For Mars, measurements to date have indicated enrichment in all the heavier isotopes consistent with atmospheric escape processes, but with uncertainty too high to tie the results with the more precise isotopic ratios achieved from SNC meteoritic analyses. We will present results to date of H, C and O isotope ratios in CO2 and H2O made to high precision (few per mil) using the Tunable Laser Spectrometer (TLS) that is part of the Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) instrument suite on MSL s Curiosity Rover
