    Vocational perspectives after spinal cord injury

    Objective: To give insight into the vocational situation several years after a traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) and describe the personal experiences and unmet needs; to give an overview of health and functional status per type of SCI and their relationship with employment status. Design: Descriptive analysis of data from a questionnaire. Setting: Dutch rehabilitation centre with special department for patients with spinal cord injuries. Subjects: Fifty-seven patients with a traumatic SCI, aged 18-60 years, admitted to the rehabilitation centre from 1990 to 1998. Main measures: Questionnaire with items related to vocational outcome, job experiences, health and functional status. Results: Of 49 patients who were working at the moment of SCI 60% currently had a paid job. Vocational outcome was related to a higher educational level. A significant relation between the SCI-specific health and functional status and employment was not found. The respondents who changed to a new employer needed more time to resume work, but seemed more satisfied with the job and lost fewer working hours than those who resumed work with the same employer. In spite of reasonable to good satisfaction with the current work situation, several negative experiences and unmet needs were reported. Conclusions: Despite a high participation in paid work following SCI, the effort of the disabled worker to have and keep a job should not be underestimated

    Effect of transient postpubertal hypo- and hyperthyroidism on reproductive parameters of Iranian broiler breeder hens

    One hundred and thirty two 26-week-old broiler breeder hens were randomly assigned into one of three treatments as control, hypothyroid (HYPO; propylthiouracil (PTU)-treated) or hyperthyroid (HYPER;thyroxine (T4)-treated) group. PTU and T4 were administered between weeks 30 and 33 of age. Blood sampling was started at week 29, and repeated every week until week 35, coinciding with weekly bodyweighing. Using ELISA, plasma levels of T3, T4 and estradiol were assayed. Egg number, fertility, hatchability, grading of day-old chicks and embryonic developmental stage of unhatched eggs weredetermined for individual artificially inseminated hen. Effects of PTU and T4 treatment on plasma T4 levels were significant (P 0.05). In conclusion, among the different reproductive parameters in this study, hatchability and weekly egg production werethe most responsive parameters to decreased or increased plasma thyroid hormone levels, respectively

    Bionemo: molecular information on biodegradation metabolism

    Bionemo (http://bionemo.bioinfo.cnio.es) stores manually curated information about proteins and genes directly implicated in the Biodegradation metabolism. When possible, the database includes information on sequence, domains and structures for proteins; and sequence, regulatory elements and transcription units for genes. Thus, Bionemo is a unique resource that complements other biodegradation databases such as the University of Minessota Biocatalysis/Biodegradation Database, or Metarouter, which focus more on the biochemical aspects of biodegradation than in the nature of the biomolecules carrying out the reactions. Bionemo has been built by manually associating sequences database entries to biodegradation reactions, using the information extracted from published articles. Information on transcription units and their regulation was also extracted from the literature for biodegradation genes, and linked to the underlying biochemical network. In its current version, Bionemo contains sequence information for 324 reactions and transcription regulation information for more than 100 promoters and 100 transcription factors. The information in the Bionemo database is available via a web server and the full database is also downloadable as a PostgresSQL dump. To facilitate the programmatic use of the information contained in the database, an object-oriented Perl API is also provided

    Rindler Particles and Classical Radiation

    We describe the quantum and classical radiation by a uniformly accelerating point source in terms of the elementary processes of absorption and emission of Rindler scalar photons of the Fulling-Davies-Unruh bath observed by a co-accelerating observer.To this end we compute the emission rate by a DeWitt detector of a Minkowski scalar particle with defined transverse momentum per unit of proper time of the source and we show that it corresponds to the induced absorption or spontaneous and induced emission of Rindler photons from the thermal bath. We then take what could be called the inert limit of the DeWitt detector by considering the limit of zero gap energy. As suggested by DeWitt, we identify in this limit the detector with a classical point source and verify the consistency of our computation with the classical result. Finally, we study the behavior of the emission rate in D space-time dimensions in connection with the so called apparent statistics inversion.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figure

    Formation of the black-hole binary M33 X-7 via mass-exchange in a tight massive system

    M33 X-7 is among the most massive X-Ray binary stellar systems known, hosting a rapidly spinning 15.65 Msun black hole orbiting an underluminous 70 Msun Main Sequence companion in a slightly eccentric 3.45 day orbit. Although post-main-sequence mass transfer explains the masses and tight orbit, it leaves unexplained the observed X-Ray luminosity, star's underluminosity, black hole's spin, and eccentricity. A common envelope phase, or rotational mixing, could explain the orbit, but the former would lead to a merger and the latter to an overluminous companion. A merger would also ensue if mass transfer to the black hole were invoked for its spin-up. Here we report that, if M33 X-7 started as a primary of 85-99 Msun and a secondary of 28-32 Msun, in a 2.8-3.1 day orbit, its observed properties can be consistently explained. In this model, the Main Sequence primary transferred part of its envelope to the secondary and lost the rest in a wind; it ended its life as a ~16 Msun He star with a Fe-Ni core which collapsed to a black hole (with or without an accompanying supernova). The release of binding energy and, possibly, collapse asymmetries "kicked" the nascent black hole into an eccentric orbit.     Acute toxicity and antihyperglycaemic effect of ethanol stem-bark extract of Annona senegalensis Pers. (Annonaceae) on alloxan induced diabetic rats

    Background: Diabetes is a common and very prevalent disease affecting the citizens of both developed and developing countries. Many oral hypoglycaemic agents available for the treatment have significant side effects and sometimes are found to be ineffective in chronic diabetic patients. Objective: To study the acute toxicity and effect of the ethanol stem-bark extract of Annona senegalensis on blood glucose in alloxan-induced diabetic rats. Material and Methods: Hypoglycaemic effect of the extract was studied in normal rats using oral glucose tolerance test and in alloxan-induced diabetic rats. Effects of 100, 200 and 300 mg/kg, i.p of ethanol stem-bark extract of Annona senegalensis, and glibenclamide (5 mg/kg, i.p) were studied on blood glucose. Results: The median lethal dose of the extract was found to be 1131.4 mg/kg by intraperitoneal route. In the normal rats (OGTT), from basal to 0 min, the extract did not show significant reduction in the fasting serum glucose level. However, the extract at 300 mg/kg and glibenclamide (5 mg/kg) significantly (p≤ 0.05) prevented glucose induced hyperglycemia at 30 to 90 min as compared to normal control. In the alloxan-induced diabetic rats, 100, 200 and 300 mg/kg of the extract produced significant (p≤0.05) reduction in blood glucose levels. Maximum effect was observed with the 300 mg/kg dose of stem-bark of Annona senegalensis. Conclusion: The results showed that the ethanol extract of the stem bark of the plant possessed antihyperglycaemic activity.     The biological hazard inherent in the clinical wastes should be considered during the management and treatment process as well as the disposal into the environment. In this chapter, the risks associated with the clinical wastes as well as the management of these wastes are discussed. The chapter focused on reviewing the types of healthcare wastes generated from hospitals and clinics as well as the regulations and management practices used for these wastes. Moreover, the health risk associated with the infectious agents which have the potential to be transmitted into the environment. It has appeared that the clinical wastes represent real hazards for the human health and the environment if they were not managed properly

    Exercise-induced oxidative stress responses in the pediatric population

Available from the publisher via the DOI in this record.Adults demonstrate an upregulation of their pro- and anti-oxidant mechanisms in response to acute exercise while systematic exercise training enhances their antioxidant capacity, thereby leading to a reduced generation of free radicals both at rest and in response to exercise stress. However, less information exists regarding oxidative stress responses and the underlying mechanisms in the pediatric population. Evidence suggests that exercise-induced redox perturbations may be valuable in order to monitor exercise-induced inflammatory responses and as such training overload in children and adolescents as well as monitor optimal growth and development. The purpose of this review was to provide an update on oxidative stress responses to acute and chronic exercise in youth. It has been documented that acute exercise induces age-specific transient alterations in both oxidant and antioxidant markers in children and adolescents. However, these responses seem to be affected by factors such as training phase, training load, fitness level, mode of exercise etc. In relation to chronic adaptation, the role of training on oxidative stress adaptation has not been adequately investigated. The two studies performed so far indicate that children and adolescents exhibit positive adaptations of their antioxidant system, as adults do. More studies are needed in order to shed light on oxidative stress and antioxidant responses, following acute exercise and training adaptations in youth. Available evidence suggests that small amounts of oxidative stress may be necessary for growth whereas the transition to adolescence from childhood may promote maturation of pro- and anti-oxidant mechanisms. Available evidence also suggests that obesity may negatively affect basal and exercise-related antioxidant responses in the peripubertal period during pre- and early-puberty

    Consumer credit in comparative perspective

    We review the literature in sociology and related fields on the fast global growth of consumer credit and debt and the possible explanations for this expansion. We describe the ways people interact with the strongly segmented consumer credit system around the world—more specifically, the way they access credit and the way they are held accountable for their debt. We then report on research on two areas in which consumer credit is consequential: its effects on social relations and on physical and mental health. Throughout the article, we point out national variations and discuss explanations for these differences. We conclude with a brief discussion of the future tasks and challenges of comparative research on consumer credit.Accepted manuscrip
