Observables in 3-dimensional quantum gravity and topological invariants
In this paper we report some results on the expectation values of a set of
observables introduced for 3-dimensional Riemannian quantum gravity with
positive cosmological constant, that is, observables in the Turaev-Viro model.
Instead of giving a formal description of the observables, we just formulate
the paper by examples. This means that we just show how an idea works with
particular cases and give a way to compute 'expectation values' in general by a

Supernova search at intermediate z. I. Spectroscopic analysis
We study 8 supernovae discovered as part of the International Time Programme
(ITP) project ``Omega and Lambda from Supernovae and the Physics of Supernova
Explosions'' at the European Northern Observatory (ENO). The goal of the
project is to increase the sample of intermediate redshift (0.1<z<0.4) SNe Ia
for testing properties of SNe Ia along z and for enlarging the sample in the

56Ni dredge-up in the type IIp Supernova 1995V
We present contemporary infrared and optical spectra of the plateau type II
SN 1995V in NGC 1087 covering four epochs, approximately 22 to 84 days after
shock breakout. The data show, for the first time, the infrared spectroscopic
evolution during the plateau phase of a typical type II event. In the optical
region P Cygni lines of the Balmer series and of metals lines were identified.
The infrared (IR) spectra were largely dominated by the continuum, but P Cygni
Paschen lines and Brackett gamma lines were also clearly seen. The other
prominent IR features are confined to wavelengths blueward of 11000 \AA and
include Sr II 10327, Fe II 10547, C I 10695 and He I 10830 \AA. We demonstrate
the presence of He I 10830 \AA on days 69 and 85. The presence of this line at
such late times implies re-ionisation. A likely re-ionising mechanism is
gamma-ray deposition following the radioactive decay of 56Ni. We examine this
mechanism by constructing a spectral model for the He I 10830 \AA line based on
explosion model s15s7b2f of Weaver & Woosley (1993). We find that this does not
generate the observed line owing to the confinement of the 56Ni to the central
zones of the ejecta. In order to reproduce the He I line, it was necessary to
introduce additional upward mixing of the 56Ni, with 10^{-5} of the total
nickel mass reaching above the helium photosphere. In addition, we argue that
the He I line-formation region is likely to have been in the form of pure

Stochastic Approach to Enantiomeric Excess Amplification and Chiral Symmetry Breaking
Stochastic aspects of chemical reaction models related to the Soai reactions
as well as to the homochirality in life are studied analytically and
numerically by the use of the master equation and random walk model. For
systems with a recycling process, a unique final probability distribution is
obtained by means of detailed balance conditions. With a nonlinear
autocatalysis the distribution has a double-peak structure, indicating the
chiral symmetry breaking. This problem is further analyzed by examining
eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the master equation. In the case without
recycling process, final probability distributions depend on the initial
conditions. In the nonlinear autocatalytic case, time-evolution starting from a
complete achiral state leads to a final distribution which differs from that
deduced from the nonzero recycling result. This is due to the absence of the
detailed balance, and a directed random walk model is shown to give the correct
final profile. When the nonlinear autocatalysis is sufficiently strong and the
initial state is achiral, the final probability distribution has a double-peak
structure, related to the enantiomeric excess amplification. It is argued that
with autocatalyses and a very small but nonzero spontaneous production, a
single mother scenario could be a main mechanism to produce the homochirality.Comment: 25 pages, 6 figure
Ponzano-Regge model revisited III: Feynman diagrams and Effective field theory
We study the no gravity limit G_{N}-> 0 of the Ponzano-Regge amplitudes with
massive particles and show that we recover in this limit Feynman graph
amplitudes (with Hadamard propagator) expressed as an abelian spin foam model.
We show how the G_{N} expansion of the Ponzano-Regge amplitudes can be
resummed. This leads to the conclusion that the dynamics of quantum particles
coupled to quantum 3d gravity can be expressed in terms of an effective new non
commutative field theory which respects the principles of doubly special
relativity. We discuss the construction of Lorentzian spin foam models

Population History and Gene Divergence in Native Mexicans Inferred from 76 Human Exomes.
Native American genetic variation remains underrepresented in most catalogs of human genome sequencing data. Previous genotyping efforts have revealed that Mexico's Indigenous population is highly differentiated and substructured, thus potentially harboring higher proportions of private genetic variants of functional and biomedical relevance. Here we have targeted the coding fraction of the genome and characterized its full site frequency spectrum by sequencing 76 exomes from five Indigenous populations across Mexico. Using diffusion approximations, we modeled the demographic history of Indigenous populations from Mexico with northern and southern ethnic groups splitting 7.2 KYA and subsequently diverging locally 6.5 and 5.7 KYA, respectively. Selection scans for positive selection revealed BCL2L13 and KBTBD8 genes as potential candidates for adaptive evolution in Rarámuris and Triquis, respectively. BCL2L13 is highly expressed in skeletal muscle and could be related to physical endurance, a well-known phenotype of the northern Mexico Rarámuri. The KBTBD8 gene has been associated with idiopathic short stature and we found it to be highly differentiated in Triqui, a southern Indigenous group from Oaxaca whose height is extremely low compared to other Native populations
Hidden Quantum Gravity in 3d Feynman diagrams
In this work we show that 3d Feynman amplitudes of standard QFT in flat and
homogeneous space can be naturally expressed as expectation values of a
specific topological spin foam model. The main interest of the paper is to set
up a framework which gives a background independent perspective on usual field
theories and can also be applied in higher dimensions. We also show that this
Feynman graph spin foam model, which encodes the geometry of flat space-time,
can be purely expressed in terms of algebraic data associated with the Poincare
group. This spin foam model turns out to be the spin foam quantization of a BF
theory based on the Poincare group, and as such is related to a quantization of
3d gravity in the limit where the Newton constant G_N goes to 0. We investigate
the 4d case in a companion paper where the strategy proposed here leads to

Puberty is a complex physiological event by which animals mature into an adult capable of sexual reproduction. In order to enhance our understanding of the genes and regulatory pathways and networks involved in puberty, we characterized the transcriptome of five reproductive tissues (i.e. hypothalamus, pituitary gland, ovary, uterus, and endometrium) as well as tissues known to be relevant to growth and metabolism needed to achieve puberty (i.e., longissimus dorsi muscle, adipose, and liver). These tissues were collected from pre- and post-pubertal Brangus heifers (3/8 Brahman; Bos indicus x 5/8 Angus; Bos taurus) derived from a population of cattle used to identify quantitative trait loci associated with fertility traits (i.e., age of first observed corpus luteum (ACL), first service conception (FSC), and heifer pregnancy (HPG)). In order to exploit the power of complementary omics analyses, pre- and post-puberty co-expression gene networks were constructed by combining the results from genome-wide association studies (GWAS), RNA-Seq, and bovine transcription factors. Eight tissues among pre-pubertal and post-pubertal Brangus heifers revealed 1,515 differentially expressed and 943 tissue-specific genes within the 17,832 genes confirmed by RNA-Seq analysis. The hypothalamus experienced the most notable up-regulation of genes via puberty (i.e., 204 out of 275 genes). Combining the results of GWAS and RNA-Seq, we identified 25 loci containing a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) associated with ACL, FSC, and (or) HPG. Seventeen of these SNP were within a gene and 13 of the genes were expressed in uterus or endometrium. Multi-tissue omics analyses revealed 2,450 co-expressed genes relative to puberty. The pre-pubertal network had 372,861 connections whereas the post-pubertal network had 328,357 connections. A sub-network from this process revealed key transcriptional regulators (i.e., PITX2, FOXA1, DACH2, PROP1, SIX6, etc.). Results from these multi-tissue omics analyses improve understanding of the number of genes and their complex interactions for puberty in cattle
