Organizational impact of evidence-informed decision making training initiatives : a case study comparison of two approaches
Background
The impact of efforts by healthcare organizations to enhance the use of evidence to improve organizational processes through training programs has seldom been assessed. We therefore endeavored to assess whether and how the training of mid- and senior-level healthcare managers could lead to organizational change.
Methods
We conducted a theory-driven evaluation of the organizational impact of healthcare leaders’ participation in two training programs using a logic model based on Nonaka’s theory of knowledge conversion. We analyzed six case studies nested within the two programs using three embedded units of analysis (individual, group and organization). Interviews were conducted during intensive one-week data collection site visits. A total of 84 people were interviewed.
Results
We found that the impact of training could primarily be felt in trainees’ immediate work environments. The conversion of attitudes was found to be easier to achieve than the conversion of skills. Our results show that, although socialization and externalization were common in all cases, a lack of combination impeded the conversion of skills. We also identified several individual, organizational and program design factors that facilitated and/or impeded the dissemination of the attitudes and skills gained by trainees to other organizational members.
Conclusions
Our theory-driven evaluation showed that factors before, during and after training can influence the extent of skills and knowledge transfer. Our evaluation went further than previous research by revealing the influence—both positive and negative—of specific organizational factors on extending the impact of training programs

Applying the UFO Ontology to Design an Agent-Oriented Engineering Language
Abstract. The problem of designing suitable conceptual modeling languages for system engineering is far from being solved. In the past years, some works have proposed the use of foundational ontologies as analysis tools to enable semantic coherence when (re)designing such languages. In this paper, we exemplify this approach by applying a foundational ontology named UFO in the design of an agent-oriented modeling language for the ARKnowD methodology. Instead of proposing new concepts and constructs, ARKnowD relies on existing work, combining two different approaches, namely Tropos and AORML. Each work is applied in a different development activity, according to their natural propensity: Tropos in Requirements Analysis and AORML in System Design. Besides the ontological approach, we propose some mapping rules between the notations, inspired in the Model Driven Architecture (MDA) metamodel transformation method. This approach helps to guarantee a smooth transition from one activity to the other
Cilia at the node of mouse embryos sense fluid flow for left-right determination via Pkd2
Unidirectional fluid flow plays an essential role in the breaking of left-right (L-R) symmetry in mouse embryos, but it has remained unclear how the flow is sensed by the embryo. We report that the Ca2+ channel Polycystin-2 (Pkd2) is required specifically in the perinodal crown cells for sensing the nodal flow. Examination of mutant forms of Pkd2 shows that the ciliary localization of Pkd2 is essential for correct L-R patterning. Whereas Kif3a mutant embryos, which lack all cilia, failed to respond to an artificial flow, restoration of primary cilia in crown cells rescued the response to the flow. Perceptions of knowledge sharing among small family firm leaders: a structural equation model
Small family firms have many unique relational qualities with implications for how knowledge is passed between individuals. Extant literature posits leadership approach as important in explaining differences in knowledge-sharing climate from one firm to another. This study investigates how leadership approaches interact with family influence to inform perceptions of knowledge sharing. We utilize survey data (n = 110) from owner-managers of knowledge-intensive small family firms in Scotland. Our findings present a choice in leadership intention, contrasting organization-focused participation against family-influenced guidance. Insight is offered on the implications of this leadership choice at both organizational and familial level
White Lines and 3d-Occupancy for the 3d Transition-Metal Oxides
Electron energy-loss spectrometry was employed to measure the white lines at
the L23 absorption edges of the 3d transition-metal oxides and lithium
transition-metal oxides. The white-line ratio (L3/L2) was found to increase
between d^0 and d^5 and decrease between d^5 and d^10, consistent with previous
results for the transition metals and their oxides. The intensities of the
white lines, normalized to the post-edge background, are linear for the 3d
transition-metal oxides and lithium transition-metal oxides. An empirical
correlation between normalized white-line intensity and 3d occupancy is
established. It provides a method for measuring changes in the 3d-state
occupancy. As an example, this empirical relationship is used to measure
changes in the transition-metal valences of Li_{1-x}Ni_{0.8}Co_{0.2}O_2 in the
range of 0 < x < 0.64. In these experiments the 3d occupancy of the nickel ion
decreased upon lithium deintercalation, while the cobalt valence remained

A framework to capture and share knowledge using storytelling and video sharing in global product development
In global engineering enterprises, information and knowledge sharing are critical factors that can determine a project's success. This statement is widely acknowledged in published literature. However, according to some academics, tacit knowledge is derived from a person’s lifetime of experience, practice, perception and learning, which makes it hard to capture and document in order to be shared. This project investigates if social media tools can be used to improve and enable tacit knowledge sharing within a global engineering enterprise. This paper first provides a brief background of the subject area, followed by an explanation of the industrial investigation, from which the proposed knowledge framework to improve tacit knowledge sharing is presented. This project’s main focus is on the improvement of collaboration and knowledge sharing amongst product development engineers in order to improve the whole product development cycle
