Efficient, full-spectrum, long-lived, non-toxic microwave lamp for plant growth

Fusion Systems Corporation has developed a mercury-free, low infrared, efficient microwave lamp using a benign sulfur based fill optimized for visible light. Our literature search and discussions with researchers directed us to enhance the bulbs red output. We have demonstrated a photosynthetic efficacy of over 2 micro-moles per microwave joule which corresponds to over 1.3 micro-moles per joule at the power main. Recent work has shown we can make additional increases in overall system efficiency. During the next two years, we expect to demonstrate a system capable of producing more than 1.5 micro-moles/joule measured at the power main with significantly less IR than alternative lamp systems. We determined optimal plant growth light requirements via a literature search and researcher input. We surveyed candidate lamp fill materials to be used in combination with sulfur and explored several methods of increasing photosynthetic efficacy

Contribution to the study of macular and paramacular functions in amblyopia

peer reviewedThe dark adaptation of the cones of the amblyopic eye is somewhat reduced. This decrease is less important than the reduction of the visual acuity. The flicker fusion frequency of the central and paracentral areas of the visual field of the amblyopic eye is not reduced. On the contrary, statistical calculation shows an inconspicuous increase. The visual acuity of the amblyopic eye is all the more reduced as the test is more searching. This lack of harmony between the angular visual acuity and the morphoscopic visual acuity is pre-existent to any treatment. Though in different degrees, it is found in amblyopia with central fixation and in amblyopia with eccentric fixation. On the other hand it is not revealed in organic lesions of the eye or of the optic tracts. Any visual image that is perceived by an amblyopic eye is the source of memorization phenomena that are identical to any image discerned by the healthy brother eye. Ā© 1962 Uitgeverij Dr W. Junk

Modern ā€˜liveā€™ football: moving from the panoptican gaze to the performative, virtual and carnivalesque

Drawing on Redhead's discussion of Baudrillard as a theorist of hyperreality, the paper considers the different ways in which the mediatized ā€˜liveā€™ football spectacle is often modelled on the ā€˜liveā€™ however eventually usurps the ā€˜liveā€™ forms position in the cultural economy, thus beginning to replicate the mediatized ā€˜liveā€™. The blurring of the ā€˜liveā€™ and ā€˜realā€™ through an accelerated mediatization of football allows the formation of an imagined community mobilized by the working class whilst mediated through the sanitization, selling of ā€˜eventsā€™ and the middle classing of football, through the re-encoding of sporting spaces and strategic decision-making about broadcasting. A culture of pub supporting then allows potential for working-class supporters to remove themselves from the panoptican gazing systems of late modern hyperreal football stadia and into carnivalesque performative spaces, which in many cases are hyperreal and simulated themselves

Erasmus Language students in a British University ā€“ a case study

Studentsā€™ assessment of their academic experience is actively sought by Higher Education institutions, as evidenced in the National Student Survey introduced in 2005. Erasmus students, despite their growing numbers, tend to be excluded from these satisfaction surveys, even though they, too, are primary customers of a University. This study aims to present results from bespoke questionnaires and semi-structured interviews with a sample of Erasmus students studying languages in a British University. These methods allow us insight into the experience of these students and their assessment as a primary customer, with a focus on language learning and teaching, university facilities and student support. It investigates to what extent these factors influence their levels of satisfaction and what costs of adaptation if any, they encounter. Although excellent levels of satisfaction were found, some costs affect their experience. They relate to difficulties in adapting to a learning methodology based on a low number of hours and independent learning and to a guidance and support system seen as too stifling. The results portray this cohortā€™s British University as a well-equipped and well-meaning but ultimately overbearing institution, which may indicate that minimising costs can eliminate some sources of dissatisfaction

    Photonic quantum ring laser

We report a quantum ring-like toroidal cavity naturally formed in a vertical-cavity-like active microdisk plane due to Rayleigh's band of whispering gallery modes. The T\sqrt{T}-dependent redshift and a square-law property of microampere-range threshold currents down to 2 Ī¼\muA are consistent with a photonic quantum wire view, due to whispering gallery mode-induced dimensional reduction.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, REVTEX, Submitted to Phys. Northerners and Southerners Differ in Conflict Culture

    Get PDF
The present study uses regression analysis of existing cross-national data sets to demonstrate that ingroup-outgroup discrimination and intergroup conflict management vary more along the north-south (latitudinal) axis than along the east-west axis of the Earth. Ingroup favoritism, outgroup rejection, political oppression, legal discrimination, and communication bullying are all less prevalent among Northerners than among Southerners in the Northern Hemisphere, but more prevalent among Northerners than among Southerners in the Southern Hemisphere. These findings provide a rich source for further research into how social conflicts are habitually experienced and handled by residents of northern versus southern habitats. A supplementary analysis specifies the extent to which ecological stressors-thermal stress, hydraulic stress, pathogenic stress, and subsistence stress-help explain why there are oppositely sloping north-south gradients of conflict culture above and below the equator. Taken in total, these results demonstrate the importance of considering latitude in forming a deeper understanding of conflict management and negotiation
