    Benchmark of the FLUKA model of crystal channeling against the UA9-H8 experiment

    AbstractChanneling in bent crystals is increasingly considered as an option for the collimation of high-energy particle beams. The installation of crystals in the LHC has taken place during this past year and aims at demonstrating the feasibility of crystal collimation and a possible cleaning efficiency improvement. The performance of CERN collimation insertions is evaluated with the Monte Carlo code FLUKA, which is capable to simulate energy deposition in collimators as well as beam loss monitor signals. A new model of crystal channeling was developed specifically so that similar simulations can be conducted in the case of crystal-assisted collimation. In this paper, most recent results of this model are brought forward in the framework of a joint activity inside the UA9 collaboration to benchmark the different simulation tools available. The performance of crystal STF 45, produced at INFN Ferrara, was measured at the H8 beamline at CERN in 2010 and serves as the basis to the comparison. Distributions of deflected particles are shown to be in very good agreement with experimental data. Calculated dechanneling lengths and crystal performance in the transition region between amorphous regime and volume reflection are also close to the measured ones

    Background This study aimed to investigate the development of opioid tolerance in patients receiving long-term methadone maintenance treatment (MMT). Methods A region-wide cross-sectional study was performed focusing on dosage and duration of treatment. Differences between racemic methadone and levomethadone were examined. All 20 psychiatric hospitals and all 110 outpatient clinics in Berlin licensed to offer MMT were approached in order to reach patients under MMT fulfilling the DSM IV criteria of opiate dependence. In the study, 720 patients treated with racemic methadone or levomethadone gave information on the dosage of treatment. Out of these, 679 patients indicated the duration of MMT. Results Treatment with racemic methadone was reported for 370 patients (54.5 %), with levomethadone for 309 patients (45.5 %). Mean duration of MMT was 7.5 years. We found a significant correlation between dosage and duration of treatment, both in a conjoint analysis for the two substances racemic methadone and levomethadone and for each substance separately. These effects remained significant when only patients receiving MMT for 1 year or longer were considered, indicating proceeding tolerance development in long-term treatment. When correlations were compared between racemic methadone and levomethadone, no significant difference was found. Conclusions Our data show a tolerance development under long-term treatment with both racemic methadone and levomethadone. Tolerance development did not differ significantly between the two substances

    Farnesol-Like Endogenous Sesquiterpenoids in Vertebrates: The Probable but Overlooked Functional ?Inbrome? Anti-Aging Counterpart of Juvenile Hormone of Insects?

    Literature on the question whether the juvenile stage of vertebrates is hormonally regulated is scarce. It seems to be intuitively assumed that this stage of development is automated, and does not require any specific hormone(s). Such reasoning mimics the state of affairs in insects until it was shown that surgical removal of a tiny pair of glands in the head, the corpora allata, ended larval life and initiated metamorphosis. Decades later, the responsible hormone was found and named ?juvenile hormone? (JH) because when present, it makes a larva molt into another larval stage. JH is a simple ester of farnesol, a sesquiterpenoid present in all eukaryotes. Whereas vertebrates do not have an anatomical counterpart of the corpora allata, their tissues do contain farnesol-like sesquiterpenoids (FLS). Some display typical JH activity when tested in appropriate insect bioassays. Some FLS are intermediates in the biosynthetic pathway of cholesterol, a compound that insects and nematodes (=Ecdysozoa) cannot synthesize by themselves. They ingest it as a vitamin. Until a recent (2014) reexamination of the basic principle underlying insect metamorphosis, it had been completely overlooked that the Ca2+-pump (SERCA) blocker thapsigargin is a sesquiterpenoid that mimics the absence of JH in inducing apoptosis. In our opinion, being in the juvenile state is primarily controlled by endogenous FLS that participate in controlling the activity of Ca2+-ATPases in the sarco(endo)plasmic reticulum (SERCAs), not only in insects but in all eukaryotes. Understanding the control mechanisms of being in the juvenile state may boost research not only in developmental biology in general, but also in diseases that develop after the juvenile stage, e.g., Alzheimer?s disease. It may also help to better understand some of the causes of obesity, a syndrome that holometabolous last larval insects severely suffer from, and for which they found a very drastic but efficient solution, namely metamorphosis

    The EUROfusion materials property handbook for DEMO in-vessel components—Status and the challenge to improve confidence level for engineering data

    The development of a specific materials database and handbook, for engineering design of in-vessel components of EU-DEMO, is an essential requirement for assessing the structural integrity by design. For baseline in-vessel materials, including EURFOER97, CuCrZr, Tungsten as well as dielectric and optical materials, this development has been ongoing for several years within the Engineering Data and Design Integration sub-project of the EUROfusion Materials Work Package. Currently the database is insufficient to ensure reliable engineering design and safety or hazard analysis and mostly does not yet exist in established nuclear codes. In this paper the current status of EU-DEMO database and handbook for key in-vessel materials is provided. This comprises practical steps taken to obtain the raw data, screening procedures and data storage, to ensure quality and provenance. We discuss how this procedure has been utilized to produce materials handbook chapter on EUROFER97 and the critical challenges in data accumulation for CuCrZr and Tungsten, planned mitigations and the implications this has on structural design. Finally, key elements and methodology of our strategy to develop the materials database and handbook for the in-vessel materials are outlined, including concepts to accommodate sparse irradiated materials data and links to EU-DEMO engineering design criteria

    Design optimization of multibody systems by sequential approximation

    Abstract. Design optimization of multibody systems is usually established by a direct coupling of multibody system analysis and mathematical programming algorithms. However, a direct coupling is hindered by the transient and computationally complex behavior of many multibody systems. In structural optimization often approximation concepts are used instead to interface numerical analysis and optimization. This paper shows that such an approach is valuable for the optimization of multibody systems as well. A design optimization tool has been developed for multibody systems that generates a sequence of approximate optimization problems. The approach is illustrated by three examples: an impact absorber, a slider-crank mechanism, and a stress-constrained four-bar mechanism. Furthermore, the consequences for an accurate and efficient accompanying design sensitivity analysis are discussed

    Candida dubliniensis candidemia in patients with chemotherapy-induced neutropenia and bone marrow transplantation.

    The recently described species Candida dubliniensis has been recovered primarily from superficial oral candidiasis in HIV-infected patients. No clinically documented invasive infections were reported until now in this patient group or in other immunocompromised patients. We report three cases of candidemia due to this newly emerging Candida species in HIV-negative patients with chemotherapy-induced immunosuppression and bone marrow transplantation

    The UA9 experimental layout

    The UA9 experimental equipment was installed in the CERN-SPS in March '09 with the aim of investigating crystal assisted collimation in coasting mode. Its basic layout comprises silicon bent crystals acting as primary collimators mounted inside two vacuum vessels. A movable 60 cm long block of tungsten located downstream at about 90 degrees phase advance intercepts the deflected beam. Scintillators, Gas Electron Multiplier chambers and other beam loss monitors measure nuclear loss rates induced by the interaction of the beam halo in the crystal. Roman pots are installed in the path of the deflected particles and are equipped with a Medipix detector to reconstruct the transverse distribution of the impinging beam. Finally UA9 takes advantage of an LHC-collimator prototype installed close to the Roman pot to help in setting the beam conditions and to analyze the efficiency to deflect the beam.
