    Tissue culture techniques are useful for ex situ conservation of rare, endemic orthreatened plant species. This report describes a protocol for somatic embryogenesis ofpeanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) through cotyledon explants. Only 10% of the explants werecontaminated by using this material to start the in vitro culture. The highest frequency(35.4%) of embryogenic calli induction was observed on MS medium supplemented with0.50 mg/l KIN in combination with 0.10 mg/l 2,4,-D. the percentage response for embryogenicproliferation increased in the medium supplemented with GA3(0.20 mg/l) and 1.0 mg/l BA.The regenerated embryos were successfully transferred to the embryo development mediumand transferred to the trays after the development of secondary and tertiary rootdevelopment

    Observations on the landing of Odonus niger at Mangalore

    The redtoothed triggerfish (Odonus niger) of the family Balistidae is a reef associated species landed by trawl nets operated along the Karnataka coast. This species forms dense aggregations in inshore waters and were not targeted till recently due to their poor market demand. The triggerfish shoals are intentionally avoided by the trawlers and the incidental catches are either discarded or brought ashore when there is available deck space for storage. Such small quantities landed are auctioned along with the miscellaneous fish groups. Some interest was evinced on this species by the fish meal traders due to limited availability of raw materials during the year 2008

    Babylonia spirata is a commercially important edible gastropod found inhabiting the coastal waters with sandy bottom.     We Use Non-Equilibrium Molecular Dynamics Simulations to Study the Heat Transfer Around Intensely Heated Solid Nanoparticles Immersed in a Model Lennard-Jones Fluid. We Focus Our Studies on the Role of the Nanoparticle Curvature on the Liquid Phase Stability under Steady-State Heating. for Small Nanoparticles We Observe a Stable Liquid Phase Near the Nanoparticle Surface, Which Can Be at a Temperature Well above the Boiling Point. Furthermore, for Particles with Radius Smaller Than a Critical Radius of 2 Nm We Do Not Observe Formation of Vapor Even above the Critical Temperature. Instead, We Report the Existence of a Stable Fluid Region with a Density Much Larger Than that of the Vapor Phase.     Resurgence of whitefish in trawl landings of Mangalore

    Lactarius lactarius, commonly known as false trevally is exploited mainly by trawlers from the inshore waters (5-30 m depth) along the Karnataka coast. Bottom-set gillnets and purseseines also land minor quantities of whitefish, besides the indigenous gears operated during monsoon. The average annual production of false travelly from multiday trawls operated along Mangalore coast remained at 416 t during the period from 2000 to 2002. A declining trend in the fishery was noticed since the year 2000 consequent to reduction in catch rates and the production reached an all-time low of 117 t in 2004. Thereafter, the catch rates in multiday trawl improved significantly from 0.09 kghтАУ1 in 2004 to an annual average of 0.33 kghтАУ1 in 2008 (Fig. 1). During the year, 50% of the annual whitefish landing was observed in October- November months, when the catch rates increased from 0.6 to 0.8 kghтАУ1

    Mussel culture in mulky estuary, Dakshina Kannada district, Karnataka during 1997-'99

    During 1997-'98 seasons, the mussel culture activities were carried out at Mulky estuary with the active participation of local fishermen and the growth rate was studied. Culture work was continued at two places in Mulky estuary during 1998-'99 seasons. The growth rate of mussels in Chitrapu area was higher than that observed in Mulky area. During 1998-'99 seasons, the meat content of the harvested mussel was low as they had spawned before the harvest. The culture works carried out at Mulky estuary reveal that mussel culture can be profitabily done during October-May months in Mulky estuary. The fishermen group can take up the culture activities as a part-time venture as the culture involves minimum labour only during the initial period and thereafter it needs little husbandry work. There is good demand for mussels in monsoon months when supply of marine fish is less due to ban on mechanized fishing. Mussels harvested in May can be processed and marketed for sale during the lean season, for which infrastructural facilities have to be developed. Once the marketing infrastructure is developed mussel culture activities can be taken up by more fishermen group in a profitable manner

    Accumulation of trace metals in green mussel Perna viridis in the shellfish harvesting environment along southern Karnataka coast

    The levels of trace metals, Cd, Pb, Cu, Zn, Ni and Fe in seawater and their bioaccumulation in green mussel Perna viridis were examined in two shellfish harvesting environments, Someshwara and Surathkal, along the southern Karnataka coast. In seawater, the concentration of trace metals analysed were below the levels causing harmful effects on the larvae and adult mussels, set by the European Council Directive 79/923/EEC. The Fe, Ni, Cd and Zn levels in mussel tissue from Surathkal were relatively higher when compared to that of mussel tissue samples from Someshwara while Cu and Pb levels were lower. The mean tissue concentrations of trace metals in the soft tissue of P. viridis from shellfish waters were found to be safe and below the permissible concentrations for seafood (US FDA and WHO) as well as EU limits in marine products
