    Model Data Fusion: developing Bayesian inversion to constrain equilibrium and mode structure

    Recently, a new probabilistic "data fusion" framework based on Bayesian principles has been developed on JET and W7-AS. The Bayesian analysis framework folds in uncertainties and inter-dependencies in the diagnostic data and signal forward-models, together with prior knowledge of the state of the plasma, to yield predictions of internal magnetic structure. A feature of the framework, known as MINERVA (J. Svensson, A. Werner, Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion 50, 085022, 2008), is the inference of magnetic flux surfaces without the use of a force balance model. We discuss results from a new project to develop Bayesian inversion tools that aim to (1) distinguish between competing equilibrium theories, which capture different physics, using the MAST spherical tokamak; and (2) test the predictions of MHD theory, particularly mode structure, using the H-1 Heliac.Comment: submitted to Journal of Plasma Fusion Research 10/11/200

    : Cigarettes are composed of hazardous chemicals such as nicotine, tar and carbon monoxide (CO) to name a few. In just a single puff of a cigarette, there are 1014 free radical molecules also known as Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) that can cause sperm damage. Various natural ingredients native to Indonesia were found to contain various antioxidants, one of them is honey. The effects of honey as antioxidant may protect body cells in neutralizing free radicals caused by smoking and reducing the damage to spermatozoa cell that is caused by ROS and thereby avoiding the declining quality of spermatozoa. This study aimed to determine the effect of honey on the quality of spermatozoa of Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus) that had been exposed to cigarette smoke. Subjects of this study were nine male Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus) randomly divided into three groups weighing 150-200 g with the age range of 12-14 weeks. Each group of mice was given exposure to the smoke of 2 cigarettes a day in which the treatment group (P1) is also given 0.5 ml of honey per day, and the treatment group (P2) honey 1 ml / day. The results showed that honey treatment can improve concentration, motility, and morphology of spermatozoa Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus) by exposure to cigarrets smoke. Occurred a significant difference of concentration, motility, and morphology of spermatozoa group given only the exposure to cigarette smoke and the group given exposure to cigarette smoke and honey. This results showed that 1 ml of honey per day could improve the quality of spermatozoa

    Three view electronically scanned interferometer for plasma electron density measurements on the H-1 heliac

    We report the development of a three view electronically scanned millimeter-wave interferometer for plasma electron density profile measurement on the H-1 heliac. The system utilizes an electronically tunable backward-wave oscillator whose output is incident on a fixed blazed diffraction grating such that sweeping the source frequency effects a spatial scan of the plasma cross section. Two diagonal views essentially span most of the plasma cross section, while the horizontal arm views the lower half of the plasma. The diffracted beams traverse the plasma in <1ms with a spatial resolution ∼20mm. A study of the density projection dependence on magnetic configuration shows that the presence of low-order rational surfaces in the plasma gives rise to sharp density gradients in the vicinity of the surface

    Studies of resonantly produced plasmas in the H-1NF heliac using a far-infrared scanning interferometer

    The H-1NF heliac regularly operates using the ion cyclotron range of frequencies at 0.5 T to produce plasmas with a mixture of hydrogen and helium gases. Due to the complex three-dimensional structure of the magnetic fluxsurfaces, these plasmas require sophisticated diagnostic systems, with good spatial coverage, to extract meaningful physical information. This article presents a study of the dependence of the plasma density profile on resonant heating conditions and magnetic configuration, using a far-infrared scanning interferometer. Recent modifications to the system and data that illustrate the performance of the interferometer will be discussed

    The use of Bayesian inversion to resolve plasma equilibrium

    Recently, bayesian probability theory has been used at a number of experiments to fold uncertainties and interdependencies in the diagnostic data and forward models, together with prior knowledge of the state of the plasma, to increase accuracy of inferred physics variables. A new probabilistic framework, MINERVA, based on bayesian graphical models, has been used at JET and W7-AS to yield predictions of internal magnetic structure. A feature of the framework is the bayesian inversion for poloidal magnetic flux without the need for an explicit equilibrium assumption. Building on this, we discuss results from a new project to develop bayesian inversion tools that aim to (1) distinguish between competing equilibrium theories, which capture different physics, using the MAST spherical tokamak, and (2) test the predictions of MHD theory, particularly mode structure, using the H-1 Heliac.     Dental fluorosis in populations from Chiang Mai, Thailand with different fluoride exposures - Paper 2: The ability of fluorescence imaging to detect differences in fluorosis prevalence and severity for different fluoride intakes from water

    BACKGROUND: To assess the ability of fluorescence imaging to detect a dose response relationship between fluorosis severity and different levels of fluoride in water supplies compared to remote photographic scoring in selected populations participating in an observational, epidemiological survey in Chiang Mai, Thailand. METHODS: Subjects were male and female lifetime residents aged 8-13 years. For each child the fluoride content of cooking water samples (CWS) was assessed to create categorical intervals of water fluoride concentration. Fluorescence images were taken of the maxillary central incisors and analyzed for dental fluorosis using two different software techniques. Output metrics for the fluorescence imaging techniques were compared to TF scores from blinded photographic scores obtained from the survey. RESULTS: Data from 553 subjects were available. Both software analysis techniques demonstrated significant correlations with the photographic scores. The metrics for area effected by fluorosis and the overall fluorescence loss had the strongest association with the photographic TF score (Spearman’s rho 0.664 and 0.652 respectively). Both software techniques performed well for comparison of repeat fluorescence images with ICC values of 0.95 and 0.85 respectively. CONCLUSIONS: This study supports the potential use of fluorescence imaging for the objective quantification of dental fluorosis. Fluorescence imaging was able to discriminate between populations with different fluoride exposures on a comparable level to remote photographic scoring with acceptable levels of repeatability

    Changing women's roles, changing environmental knowledges: evidence from Upper Egypt

    The aim of this paper is to investigate the ways in which changing gender roles in a Bedouin community in Upper Egypt, brought about by settlement over the last 20 years on the shores of Lake Nasser, have impacted on the accumulation and development of indigenous environmental knowledges by Bedouin women. The research was carried out among four groups of Ababda Bedouin in the Eastern Desert of Egypt and involved in-depth monthly conversations carried out over a period of 12 months. The main conclusions of the study are that the women of the study area have had to develop new knowledges which, in some cases, are now different from those held by men because of the different economic circumstances in which many find themselves; that these knowledges are fluid, dynamic and ever-changing with their own internal dynamism; and that socially constructed notions of gender are vital in the development process, notions that are sensitive to both men's and women's interests and their interrelationships

    Insulin Sensitivity and Sepsis Score: A Correlation between Model-based Metric and Sepsis Scoring System in Critically Ill Patients

    Sepsis is highly correlated with mortality and morbidity. Sepsis is a clinical condition demarcated as the existence of infection and systemic inflammatory response syndrome, SIRS. Confirmation of infection requires a blood culture test, which requires incubation, and thus results take at least 48 h for a syndrome that requires early direct treatment. Since sepsis has a strong inflammatory component, it is hypothesized that metabolic markers affected by inflammation, such as insulin sensitivity, might provide a metric for more rapid, real-time diagnosis. This study uses clinical data from 30 sepsis patients (7624 h in ICU) of whom 60% are male. Median age and median Apache II score are 63 years and 19, respectively. Model-identified insulin sensitivity (SI) profiles were obtained for each patient, and insulin sensitivity and its hourly changes were correlated with modified hourly sepsis scores (SSH1). SI profiles and values were similar across the cohort. The sepsis score is highly variable and changes rapidly. The modified hourly sepsis score, SSH1, shows a better relation with insulin sensitivity due to less fluctuation in the SIRS element. Median SI and median SI of the cohort is 0.4193e-3 and 0.004253e-3 L/mU.min, respectively. Additionally, median SI are 4.392 × 10−4 L/mU min (SSH1 = 0), 4.153 × 10−4 L/mU min (SSH1 = 1), 3.752 × 10−4 L/mU min (SSH1 = 2) and 2.353 × 10−4 L/mU min (SSH1 = 3). Significant relationship between insulin sensitivity across different SSH1 groups was observed (p < 0.05) even when corrected for multiple comparisons. CDF of SI indicates that insulin sensitivity is more significant when comparing an hourly sepsis score at a very distinguished level

    A multichannel magnetic probe system for analysing magnetic fluctuations in helical axis plasmas

    The need to understand the structure of magnetic fluctuations in H-1NF heliac [S. Hamberger et al., Fusion Technol. 17, 123 (1990)] plasmas has motivated the installation of a sixteen former, tri-axis helical magnetic probe Mirnov array (HMA). The new array complements two existing poloidal Mirnov arrays by providing polarisation information, higher frequency response, and improved toroidal resolution. The helical placement is ideal for helical axis plasmas because it positions the array as close as possible to the plasma in regions of varying degrees of favourable curvature in the magnetohydrodynamic sense, but almost constant magnetic angle. This makes phase variation with probe position near linear, greatly simplifying the analysis of the data. Several of the issues involved in the design, installation, data analysis, and calibration of this unique array are presented including probe coil design, frequency response measurements, mode number identification, orientation calculations, and mapping probe coil positions to magnetic coordinates. Details of specially designed digitally programmable pre-amplifiers, which allow gains and filters to be changed as part of the data acquisition initialisation sequence and stored with the probe signals, are also presented. The low shear heliac geometry [R. Jiménez-Gómez et al., Nucl. Fusion 51, 033001 (2011)], flexibility of the H-1NF heliac, and wealth of information provided by the HMA create a unique opportunity for detailed study of Alfvén eigenmodes, which could be a serious issue for future fusion reactors.This work was supported by the Education Investment Fund under the Super Science Initiative of the Australian Government.
