Can cooperation within the vaginal microbiome lead to the development of bacterial vaginosis?

Our well-being and our microbes - Annual Meeting of the New Zealand Microbiological Society[Excerpt] Despite being a controversial topic over the past few decades, Gardnerella vaginalis has been attributed a central role in bacterial vaginosis (BV) development. An important milestone in BV research was the discovery that the different species involved in BV were associated in a structured polymicrobial biofilm, dominated by G. vaginalis. Subsequent studies demonstrated that G. vaginalis biofilms display a high resistance to the protective mechanisms of normal vaginal microflora, as well as an increased tolerance to antibiotics. Despite the increased evidence of the pivotal role of G. vaginalis in BV biofilm development, the importance of the other BV-associated anaerobes should not be neglected. There are some observational studies that correlate bacterial co-colonization between G. vaginalis and some other specific BV-associated bacteria during BV. Furthermore, synergistic interactions can occur between BV-associated species and G. vaginalis, leading to increased biofilm formation in dual-species biofilms. We hypothesized that differential bacterial interactions can occur during BV development. Moesziomyces spp. cultivation using cheese whey: new yeast extract-free media, beta-galactosidase biosynthesis and mannosylerythritol lipids production

ABSTRACT: Mannosylerythritol lipids (MELs) are biosurfactants with excellent biochemical properties and a wide range of potential applications. However, high production costs, low productivity and unsatisfactory scale-up production have hampered commercial adoption. Herein, we report for the first time the beta-galactosidase production by Moesziomyces spp. from different sugars (D-galactose, D-glucose and D-lactose), with D-galactose being the best beta-galactosidase inducer, with 11.2 and 63.1 IU/mg(biomass), for Moesziomyces aphidis 5535(T) and Moesziomyces antarcticus 5048(T), respectively. The production of this enzyme allows to break down D-lactose and thus to produce MEL directly from D-lactose or cheese whey (a cheese industry by-product). Remarkably, when CW was used as sole media component (carbon and mineral source), in combination with waste frying oil, MEL productivities were very close (1.40 and 1.31 g(MEL)/L/day) to the ones obtained with optimized medium containing yeast extract (1.92 and 1.50 g(MEL)/g(susbtrate)), both for M. antarcticus and M. aphidis. Optimal magnitude and probability of fines

The economic literature on crime and punishment focuses on the trade-off between probability and severity of punishment, and suggests that detection probability and fines are substitutes. In this paper it is shown that, in presence of substantial underdeterrence caused by costly detection and punishment, these instruments may become complements. When offenders are poor, the deterrent value of monetary sanctions is low. Thus, the government does not invest a lot in detection. If offenders are rich, however, the deterrent value of monetary sanctions is high, so it is more profitable to prosecute them.Crime, probability and severity of sanctions, law enforcement

While research on the history of economics can be important to modern economics, the work of historians of economics is more often than reasonable associated with either non-contemporary or heterodox issues. I provide quantitative evidence of this, by analyzing the publications in the three main history of economics journals over the last fourteen years (1993-2006). This special section includes papers originally presented at a workshop on \'Epistemological Perspectives on Simulation\' in July 2004 at the University of Koblenz, in which some thirty colleagues participated. It had been our impression that there was (and still is) a small, but growing number of researchers who are interested in investigating the preconditions of successfully deploying simulation as a research tool. What happens to Gardnerella vaginalis when growing as a biofilm: a comparative transcriptomic analyses by RNA-seq

Bacteria assume distinct lifestyles during the planktonic and biofilm modes of growth. In biofilms, they are more tolerant to antibiotics and can evade the immune system response more effectively. However, little is known regarding the molecular determinants involved in biofilm formation by Gardnerella vaginalis, the predominant species found in the polymicrobial condition bacterial vaginosis (BV), the most common vaginal disorder of women in reproductive age.Hence, to gain insight into the pathogenesis of G. vaginalis, we carried out a comparative transcriptomic analysis between planktonic and biofilm phenotypes, using RNA-sequencing. Significant differences were found in the expression of 815 genes. A detailed analysis of the results obtained was performed based on direct and functional gene interactions. In biofilm bacteria, the cell envelope appeared to be very active since genes encoding binding proteins and proteins involved in the synthesis of murein were significantly up-regulated. In addition, our data showed that G. vaginalis reflects the typical adaptation to stress and starvation conditions. Interestingly, genes associated with glucose and carbon metabolism, as well as oxidoreductase activity were found down-regulated in biofilms.Furthermore, gene-regulated processes in G. vaginalis biofilms resulted in a protected form of bacterial growth, characterized by low metabolic activity, which is appropriate to guarantee long-term survival during BV recurrence. Therefore, our data suggested that G. vaginalis adjust its lifestyle during colonization and infection by means of an extensive change of gene expression
