Learning the Designer's Preferences to Drive Evolution
This paper presents the Designer Preference Model, a data-driven solution
that pursues to learn from user generated data in a Quality-Diversity
Mixed-Initiative Co-Creativity (QD MI-CC) tool, with the aims of modelling the
user's design style to better assess the tool's procedurally generated content
with respect to that user's preferences. Through this approach, we aim for
increasing the user's agency over the generated content in a way that neither
stalls the user-tool reciprocal stimuli loop nor fatigues the user with
periodical suggestion handpicking. We describe the details of this novel
solution, as well as its implementation in the MI-CC tool the Evolutionary
Dungeon Designer. We present and discuss our findings out of the initial tests
carried out, spotting the open challenges for this combined line of research
that integrates MI-CC with Procedural Content Generation through Machine

On-chip spectroscopy with thermally-tuned high-Q photonic crystal cavities
Spectroscopic methods are a sensitive way to determine the chemical
composition of potentially hazardous materials. Here, we demonstrate that
thermally-tuned high-Q photonic crystal cavities can be used as a compact
high-resolution on-chip spectrometer. We have used such a chip-scale
spectrometer to measure the absorption spectra of both acetylene and hydrogen
cyanide in the 1550 nm spectral band, and show that we can discriminate between
the two chemical species even though the two materials have spectral features
in the same spectral region. Our results pave the way for the development of
chip-size chemical sensors that can detect toxic substances
Explainable AI for designers: A human-centered perspective on mixed-initiative co-creation
Growing interest in eXplainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) aims to make AI and machine learning more understandable to human users. However, most existing work focuses on new algorithms, and not on usability, practical interpretability and efficacy on real users. In this vision paper, we propose a new research area of eXplainable AI for Designers (XAID), specifically for game designers. By focusing on a specific user group, their needs and tasks, we propose a human-centered approach for facilitating game designers to co-create with AI/ML techniques through XAID. Carotid ultrasound findings as a predictor of long-term survival after abdominal aortic aneurysm repair: a 14-year prospective study
AbstractPurposeSeveral factors have been related to long-term survival after open abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair. The effect of carotid stenosis on outcome has not yet been examined. We performed an open prospective study to evaluate the prognostic significance of carotid stenosis on long-term survival of patients who had undergone elective operative repair of AAA.MethodsTwo hundred eight patients who underwent elective open AAA repair in our department between March 1987 and December 2001 were included in the study. All patients were evaluated preoperatively with color duplex ultrasound (US) scanning of the carotid arteries, and were followed up with clinical examination and carotid duplex US scanning 1 month after the operation and every 6 months thereafter. Median duration of follow-up was 50 months (range, 5-181 months). Cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, as well as all causes of mortality, were recorded and analyzed with regard to traditional risk factors and carotid US findings.ResultsTwenty-seven fatal and 46 nonfatal cardiovascular events were recorded. Both univariate and multivariate analysis showed that carotid stenosis 50% or greater and echolucent plaque were significantly associated with cardiovascular mortality and morbidity. Carotid stenosis was a stronger predictor of cardiovascular death than was ankle/brachial index. Age, hypercholesterolemia, coronary artery disease, and diabetes mellitus were also associated with higher mortality and morbidity from cardiovascular causes.ConclusionPatients electively operated on for AAA repair and with stenosis 50% or greater and echolucent plaque at duplex US scanning are at significantly increased risk for cardiovascular mortality and morbidity. Carotid US can therefore be used to select a subgroup of patients with AAA who might benefit from medical intervention, including antiplatelet and lipid-lowering agents

Inflammatory pseudotumor associated with Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection
SummaryBackgroundInflammatory pseudotumor is a relatively rare entity; originally identified in the lung, it has been described in multiple extrapulmonary anatomic locations.Case reportWe report on the unusual case of an inflammatory pseudotumor associated with Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection, which was initially mistaken for a renal malignancy both in clinical and radiological settings. We additionally present three brief reviews concerning: (1) infectious agents postulated to induce morphological changes of an inflammatory pseudotumor; (2) mycobacterial pseudotumors; and (3) distinction from inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors of the renal pelvis.ConclusionsThe present case highlights the diagnostic importance of PCR-based detection of mycobacterial DNA in granulomatous tissue responses. It is of crucial importance that clinicians are aware of this unusual manifestation of mycobacterial infection to ensure that pertinent laboratory evaluation is employed and appropriate treatment is administered in order to avoid potential clinical implications
Mycotic pseudoaneurysms complicating renal transplantation: a case series and review of literature
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Kidney transplantation can be complicated by infection and subsequent development of mycotic aneurysm, endangering the survival of the graft and the patient. Management of this condition in five cases is discussed, accompanied by a review of the relevant literature.</p> <p>Case presentations</p> <p>Five patients, three men 42-, 67- and 57-years-old and two women 55- and 21-years-old (mean age of 48 years), all Caucasians, developed a mycotic aneurysm in the region of the anastomosis between renal graft artery and iliac axes. Four patients presented with systemic fever and iliac fossa pain and one presented with hemorrhagic shock. Morphologic investigation by color doppler ultrasonography revealed a pseudoaneurysm at the anastomotic site. A combination of antibiotic therapy, surgery and interventional procedures was required as all kidney transplants had to be removed. No recurrence was recorded during the follow-up period.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>A high index of suspicion is required for the timely diagnosis of a mycotic aneurysm; aggressive treatment with cover stents and/or surgical excision is necessary in order to prevent potentially fatal complications.</p

zwężenia tętnicy szyjnej. Zalecenia oceniano, przypisując im odpowiedni poziom dowodów. Wykonanie endarterektomii
tętnicy szyjnej (CEA) zaleca się u pacjentów z objawami, u których zwężenie jest większe niż
50%, jeśli częstość występowania udaru mózgu/zgonu w okresie okołooperacyjnym wynosi mniej niż 6% [A];
najlepiej, aby CEA wykonano w ciągu 2 tygodni od wystąpienia ostatnich objawów [A]. Zabieg ten zaleca się
także u mężczyzn, u których nie stwierdza się objawów, w wieku poniżej 75 rż., ze zwężeniem wynoszącym
70–99%, jeśli częstość występowania udaru mózgu/zgonu w okresie okołooperacyjnym wynosi mniej niż 3%

The Tug1 locus is essential for male fertility
Background: Several long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been shown to function as central components of molecular machines that play fundamental roles in biology. While the number of annotated lncRNAs in mammalian genomes has greatly expanded, their functions remain largely uncharacterized. This is compounded by the fact that identifying lncRNA loci that have robust and reproducible phenotypes when mutated has been a challenge. Results: We previously generated a cohort of 20 lncRNA loci knockout mice. Here, we extend our initial study and provide a more detailed analysis of the highly conserved lncRNA locus, Taurine Upregulated Gene 1 (Tug1). We report that Tug1 knockout male mice are sterile with complete penetrance due to a low sperm count and abnormal sperm morphology. Having identified a lncRNA loci with a robust phenotype, we wanted to determine which, if any, potential elements contained in the Tug1 genomic region (DNA, RNA, protein, or the act of transcription) have activity. Using engineered mouse models and cell-based assays, we provide evidence that the Tug1 locus harbors three distinct regulatory activities - two noncoding and one coding: (i) a cis DNA repressor that regulates many neighboring genes, (ii) a lncRNA that can regulate genes by a trans-based function, and finally (iii) Tug1 encodes an evolutionary conserved peptide that when overexpressed impacts mitochondrial membrane potential. Conclusions: Our results reveal an essential role for the Tug1 locus in male fertility and uncover three distinct regulatory activities in the Tug1 locus, thus highlighting the complexity present at lncRNA loci
