Does familial risk for alcohol use disorder predict alcohol hangover?

    Get PDF
Positive family history of alcohol use disorder (FHP), a variable associated with propensity for alcohol use disorder (AUD), has been linked with elevated hangover frequency and severity, after controlling for alcohol use. This implies that hangover experiences may be related to AUD. However, inadequate control of alcohol consumption levels, low alcohol dose and testing for hangover during the intoxication phase detract from these findings. Here, we present further data pertinent to understanding the relationship between family history and alcohol hangover. Study 1 compared past year hangover frequency in a survey of 24 FHP and 118 family history negative (FHN) individuals. Study 2 applied a quasi-experimental naturalistic approach assessing concurrent hangover severity in 17 FHP and 32 FHN individuals the morning after drinking alcohol. Both studies applied statistical control for alcohol consumption levels. In Study 1, both FHP status and estimated blood alcohol concentration on the heaviest drinking evening of the past month predicted the frequency of hangover symptoms experienced over the previous 12 months. In Study 2, estimated blood alcohol concentration the previous evening predicted hangover severity but FHP status did not. FHP, indicating familial risk for AUD, was not associated with concurrent hangover severity but was associated with increased estimates of hangover frequency the previous year

The relationship of anger expression to health problems among black americans in a national survey

This study examined the relationship between anger expression, other psychosocial measures, and health problems in a nationally representative, cross-sectional sample of 1277 black adults. Subjects indicating a high level of outwardly expressed anger during a period in which they experienced a severe personal problem had a significantly higher number of health problems than their counterparts who expressed low and moderate levels of anger. Anger expression also significantly interacted with a measure of life strain (employment status) to predict health problems. Blacks who were unemployed were more likely to have a higher number of health problems if anger was expressed outwardly at a high level. The relationship was found to be independent of age, gender, urbanicity, smoking, and drinking problems. The overall pattern of the findings suggests that blacks who are at increased risk for health problems may be identified by how often anger is experienced and expressed during periods of emotional distress.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/44809/1/10865_2004_Article_BF00846419.pd

The research results show that The lives of the multicultural that could lead to the occurrence of intercourse of culture through assimilation, acculturation, and amalgamation. The intercourse of culture through three aspects of it can run well theres happened in Rantau Sakti village on seven principles like language, system of knowledge , a social organization , celebration life and technologi, means of subsistence, religion, and art . There is also intercourse of culture with amalgamation culture that leads to assimilation and acculturation. Its launching factor are the attitude of tolerance and open, in common religion, and the same occasion in the economic field. While the hindrance factor are differences of religion and stereotype (ethnic prejudice). Those two factors each happened to the process of changing culture with assimilation, acculturation, and amalgamation That leads to a positive thing.Keyword: The Culture Intercourse, Inter-ethnic

The relation between anger coping strategies, anger mood and somatic complaints in children and adolescents

    Get PDF
Attempts to explain the experience of somatic complaints among children and adolescents suggest that they may in part result from the influence of particular strategies for coping with anger on the longevity of negative emotions. To explore these relationships British (n = 393) and Dutch (n = 299) children completed a modified version of the Behavioral Anger Response Questionnaire (BARQ), and two additional questionnaires assessing anger mood and somatic complaints. A hierarchical regression analysis showed that for both the UK and Dutch samples two coping styles, Social support-seeking and Rumination, made a significant contribution to somatic complaints, over and above the variance explained by anger mood. A tendency to repeatedly think or talk about an angering event as a way of coping seems to underlie the observed negative health effects. In addition, tentative support is given for a broader range of strategies to cope with anger than just the traditionally studied anger-out and anger-in styles. © 2007 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC

Non-nociceptive roles of opioids in the CNS: opioids' effects on neurogenesis, learning, memory and affect.

    Get PDF
Mortality due to opioid use has grown to the point where, for the first time in history, opioid-related deaths exceed those caused by car accidents in many states in the United States. Changes in the prescribing of opioids for pain and the illicit use of fentanyl (and derivatives) have contributed to the current epidemic. Less known is the impact of opioids on hippocampal neurogenesis, the functional manipulation of which may improve the deleterious effects of opioid use. We provide new insights into how the dysregulation of neurogenesis by opioids can modify learning and affect, mood and emotions, processes that have been well accepted to motivate addictive behaviours

Neue Verfahren und Methoden zur Sanierung von Altlasten - am Beispiel der Deponie Georgswerder, Hamburg. T. 10: Schnelle Vor-Ort-Analytik mit einem mobilen Massenspektrometer Schlussbericht

The distribution of organic soil pollutants in hazardous waste sites, such as aromatic, aliphatic, halogenated or polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons is very inhomogeneous. An effective assessment of a contaminated area requires processing a large number of soil samples. In an effort to minimize time delays due to sample transport and tedious laboratory sample preparation and analysis, new on-site methods were developed on the basis of employing a mobile gaschromatograph-mass-spectrometer (MM1). Analytical data is available within 2-10 min after sampling. A typical throughput is 60 analyses per day. Soil air is sampled on Tenax and analyzed by thermal-desorption-GC-MS. Soil samples can be processed employing either a headspace-method or an acetone-ultrasonication-extraction followed by direct-MS or fast GC-MS-analysis. Limits of detection are some #mu#g/m"3 for soil air and mg/kg for soil analysis. Data quality objectives are met using control samples, frequent instrument calibration and internal standards (surrogates). Seven hazardous waste sites were assessed and comparative laboratory analyses prove the efficiency with which Hamburgs contaminated soils are now routinely examined. Large amounts of hazardous chemicals are transported in tankers or container ships over the seas. Due to accidents, hazardous material may contaminate the marine environment. Fast an exact localization is an essential requirement for efficient recovery. For this purpose, an ROV-based submersible gaschromatograph - mass spectrometer (GC/MS) system with an automated membrane introduction (MI) has been developed. Thermal forced membrane introduction is an efficient means of hyphenating sample preparation to GC/MS systems, because it enables the on-line detection of gaseous compounds and the periodical and quantitative detection of semivolatile organic compounds (SOC) and volatile organic compounds (VOC) in cycles of a few minutes. The watertight and pressurized sampling system based on the membrane introduction is designed for the use in ocean water up to a depth of 300 m. Valves, pumps and sensors are controlled by a microcontroller. A safety system monitoring humidity, temperature and pressure protects the system by indicating overheating and leakage. The analytical results and the remote control of the MI/GC/MS are performed via optical fiber by means of Ethernet. Within the project we confirmed the analytical performance and successfully tested the reliability of the MI/GC/MS by several applications during measurement campaigns in the German Bight.
