Hybrid bounds for twisted L-functions
The aim of this paper is to derive bounds on the critical line Rs 1/2 for L- functions attached to twists f circle times chi of a primitive cusp form f of level N and a primitive character modulo q that break convexity simultaneously in the s and q aspects. If f has trivial nebentypus, it is shown that
L(f circle times chi, s) << (N vertical bar s vertical bar q)(epsilon) N-4/5(vertical bar s vertical bar q)(1/2-1/40),
where the implied constant depends only on epsilon > 0 and the archimedean parameter of f. To this end, two independent methods are employed to show

Branes from a non-Abelian (2,0) tensor multiplet with 3-algebra
In this paper, we study the equations of motion for non-Abelian N=(2,0)
tensor multiplets in six dimensions, which were recently proposed by Lambert
and Papageorgakis. Some equations are regarded as constraint equations. We
employ a loop extension of the Lorentzian three-algebra (3-algebra) and examine
the equations of motion around various solutions of the constraint equations.
The resultant equations take forms that allow Lagrangian descriptions. We find
various (5+d)-dimensional Lagrangians and investigate the relation between them

A Population of Massive Globular Clusters in NGC 5128
We present velocity dispersion measurements of 14 globular clusters in NGC
5128 (Centarus A) obtained with the MIKE echelle spectrograph on the 6.5m
Magellan Clay telescope. These clusters are among the most luminous globular
clusters in NGC 5128 and have velocity dispersions comparable to the most
massive clusters known in the Local Group, ranging from 10 - 30 km/s. We
describe in detail our cross-correlation measurements, as well as simulations
to quantify the uncertainties. These 14 globular clusters are the brightest NGC
5128 globular clusters with surface photometry and structural parameters
measured from the Hubble Space Telescope. We have used these measurements to
derive masses and mass-to-light ratios for all of these clusters and establish
that the fundamental plane relations for globular clusters extend to an order
of magnitude higher mass than in the Local Group. The mean mass-to-light ratio
for the NGC 5128 clusters is ~3+/-1, higher than measurements for all but the
most massive Local Group clusters. These massive clusters begin to bridge the
mass gap between the most massive star clusters and the lowest-mass galaxies.
We find that the properties of NGC 5128 globular clusters overlap quite well
with the central properties of nucleated dwarf galaxies and ultracompact dwarf
galaxies. As six of these clusters also show evidence for extratidal light, we
hypothesize that at least some of these massive clusters are the nuclei of

Quantum Hall Ferromagnets
It is pointed out recently that the quantum Hall states in bilayer
systems behave like easy plane quantum ferromagnets. We study the
magnetotransport of these systems using their ``ferromagnetic" properties and a
novel spin-charge relation of their excitations. The general transport is a
combination of the ususal Hall transport and a time dependent transport with
time average. The latter is due to a phase slippage process in
and is characterized by two topological constants. (Figures will be

Aspects of U-duality in BLG models with Lorentzian metric 3-algebras
In our previous paper, it was shown that BLG model based on a Lorentzian
metric 3-algebra gives Dp-brane action whose worldvolume is compactified on
torus T^d (d=p-2). Here the 3-algebra was a generalized one with d+1 pairs of
Lorentzian metric generators and expressed in terms of a loop algebra with
central extensions. In this paper, we derive the precise relation between the
coupling constant of the super Yang-Mills, the moduli of T^d and some R-R flux
with VEV's of ghost fields associated with Lorentzian metric generators. In
particular, for d=1, we derive the Yang-Mills action with theta term and show
that SL(2,Z) Montonen-Olive duality is realized as the rotation of two VEV's.
Furthermore, some moduli parameters such as NS-NS 2-form flux are identified as
the deformation parameters of the 3-algebras. By combining them, we recover
most of the moduli parameters which are required by U-duality symmetry.Comment: 27 pages, v2: minor correction
On 32-GHz cryogenically cooled HEMT low-noise amplifiers
The cryogenic noise temperature performance of a two-stage and a three-stage 32 GHz High Electron Mobility Transistor (HEMT) amplifier was evaluated. The amplifiers employ 0.25 micrometer conventional AlGaAs/GaAs HEMT devices, hybrid matching input and output microstrip circuits, and a cryogenically stable dc biasing network. The noise temperature measurements were performed in the frequency range of 31 to 33 GHz over a physical temperature range of 300 K down to 12 K. Across the measurement band, the amplifiers displayed a broadband response, and the noise temperature was observed to decrease by a factor of 10 in cooling from 300 K to 15 K. The lowest noise temperature measured for the two-stage amplifier at 32 GHz was 35 K with an associated gain of 16.5 dB, while the three-stage amplifier measured 39 K with an associated gain of 26 dB. It was further observed that both amplifiers were insensitive to light

Mechanistic Study Of Plasma Damage Of Low k Dielectric Surfaces
Plasma damage to low k dielectric materials was investigated from a mechanistic point of view. Low k dielectric films were treated by plasma Ar, O-2, N-2/H-2, N-2 and H-2 in a standard RIE chamber and the damage was characterized by Angle Resolved X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (ARXPS), X-Ray Reflectivity (XRR), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Contact Angle measurements. Both carbon depletion and surface densification were observed on the top surface of damaged low k materials while the bulk remained largely unaffected. Plasma damage was found to be a complicated phenomenon involving both chemical and physical effects, depending on chemical reactivity and the energy and mass of the plasma species. A downstream hybrid plasma source with separate ions and atomic radicals was employed to study their respective roles in the plasma damage process. Ions were found to play a more important role in the plasma damage process. The dielectric constant of low k materials can increase up to 20% due to plasma damage and we attributed this to the removal of the methyl group making the low k surface hydrophilic. Annealing was generally effective in mitigating moisture uptake to restore the k value but the recovery was less complete for higher energy plasmas. Quantum chemistry calculation confirmed that physisorbed water in low k materials induces the largest increase of dipole moments in comparison with changes of surface bonding configurations, and is primarily responsible for the dielectric constant increase.Microelectronics Research Cente
A New H I Survey of Active Galaxies
We have conducted a new Arecibo survey for H I emission for 113 galaxies with
broad-line (type 1) active galactic nuclei (AGNs) out to recession velocities
as high as 35,000 km/s. The primary aim of the study is to obtain sensitive H I
spectra for a well-defined, uniformly selected sample of active galaxies that
have estimates of their black hole masses in order to investigate correlations
between H I properties and the characteristics of the AGNs. H I emission was
detected in 66 out of the 101 (65%) objects with spectra uncorrupted by radio
frequency interference, among which 45 (68%) have line profiles with adequate
signal-to-noise ratio and sufficiently reliable inclination corrections to
yield robust deprojected rotational velocities. This paper presents the basic
survey products, including an atlas of H I spectra, measurements of H I flux,
line width, profile asymmetry, optical images, optical spectroscopic
parameters, as well as a summary of a number of derived properties pertaining
to the host galaxies. To enlarge our primary sample, we also assemble all
previously published H I measurements of type 1 AGNs for which can can estimate
black hole masses, which total an additional 53 objects. The final
comprehensive compilation of 154 broad-line active galaxies, by far the largest
sample ever studied, forms the basis of our companion paper, which uses the H I

Two--Electron Atoms in Short Intense Laser Pulses
We discuss a method of solving the time dependent Schrodinger equation for
atoms with two active electrons in a strong laser field, which we used in a
previous paper [A. Scrinzi and B. Piraux, Phys. Rev. A 56, R13 (1997)] to
calculate ionization, double excitation and harmonic generation in Helium by
short laser pulses. The method employs complex scaling and an expansion in an
explicitly correlated basis. Convergence of the calculations is documented and
error estimates are provided. The results for Helium at peak intensities up to
10^15 W/cm^2 and wave length 248 nm are accurate to at least 10 %. Similarly
accurate calculations are presented for electron detachment and double
excitation of the negative hydrogen ion.Comment: 14 pages, including figure
High-ionization mid-infrared lines as black hole mass and bolometric luminosity indicators in active galactic nuclei
We present relations of the black hole mass and the optical luminosity with
the velocity dispersion and the luminosity of the [Ne V] and the [O IV]
high-ionization lines in the mid-infrared (MIR) for 28 reverberation-mapped
active galactic nuclei. We used high-resolution Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph
and Infrared Space Observatory Short Wavelength Spectrometer data to fit the
profiles of these MIR emission lines that originate from the narrow-line region
of the nucleus. We find that the lines are often resolved and that the velocity
dispersion of [Ne V] and [O IV] follows a relation similar to that between the
black hole mass and the bulge stellar velocity dispersion found for local
galaxies. The luminosity of the [Ne V] and the [O IV] lines in these sources is
correlated with that of the optical 5100A continuum and with the black hole
mass. Our results provide a means to derive black hole properties in various
types of active galactic nuclei, including highly obscured systems.Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ
