    Eliminating Redundant Training Data Using Unsupervised Clustering Techniques

    Training data for supervised learning neural networks can be clustered such that the input/output pairs in each cluster are redundant. Redundant training data can adversely affect training time. In this paper we apply two clustering algorithms, ART2 -A and the Generalized Equality Classifier, to identify training data clusters and thus reduce the training data and training time. The approach is demonstrated for a high dimensional nonlinear continuous time mapping. The demonstration shows six-fold decrease in training time at little or no loss of accuracy in the handling of evaluation data

    Calculation of an optimized telescope apodizer for Terrestrial Planet Finder coronagraphic telescope

    One of two approaches to implementing NASA's Terrestrial Planet Finder is to build a space telescope that utilizes the techniques of coronagraphy and apodization to suppress diffraction and image exo-planets. We present a method for calculation of a telescope's apodizer which suppresses the side lobes of the image of a star so as to optimally detect an Earth-like planet. Given the shape of a telescope's aperture and given a search region for a detector, we solve an integral equation to determine an amplitude modulation (an apodizer) which suppresses the star's energy in the focal plane search region. The method is quite general and yields as special cases the product apodizer reported by Nisenson and Papaliolios (2001) and the Prolate spheroidal apodizer of Kasdin et al (2002), and Aime et al (2002). We show computer simulations of the apodizers and the corresponding point spread functions for various aperture-detector configurations.Comment: 16 Pages, 9 figures, Accepted for publication in June issue of PAS

    Bone area, bone electrophysiology, bone vascularity, osteoblast morphology, and osteoblast histogenesis were studied in rats associated with Cosmos 1887. The results suggest that the synchronous animals were the only group with a significantly larger bone area than the basal group, that the bone electrical potential was more negative in flight than in the synchronous rats, that the endosteal osteoblasts from flight rats had greater numbers of transitional Golgi vesicles but no difference in the large Golgi saccules or the alkaline phosphatase activity, that the perioteal vasculature in the shaft of flight rats often showed very dense intraluminal deposits with adjacent degenerating osteocytes as well as lipid accumulations within the lumen of the vessels and sometimes degeneration of the vascular wall (this change was not present in the metaphyseal region of flight animals), and that the progenitor cells decreased in flight rats while the preosteoblasts increased compared to controls. Many of the results suggest that the animals were beginning to recover from the effects of spaceflight during the two day interval between landing and euthanasia; flight effects, such as the vascular changes, did not appear to recover

    On the Moat-Penumbra Relation

    Proper motions in a sunspot group with a delta-configuration and close to the solar disc center have been studied by employing local correlation tracking techniques. The analysis is based on more than one hour time series of G-band images. Radial outflows with a mean speed of 0.67 km s^{-1} have been detected around the spots, the well-known sunspots moats. However, these outflows are not found in those umbral core sides without penumbra. Moreover, moat flows are only found in those sides of penumbrae located in the direction marked by the penumbral filaments. Penumbral sides perpendicular to them show no moat flow. These results strongly suggest a relation between the moat flow and the well-known, filament aligned, Evershed flow. The standard picture of a moat flow originated from a blocking of the upward propagation of heat is commented in some detail.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, To appear in ApJ Letter

    Papaya Ringspot Virus Resistance of Transgenic Rainbow and SunUp is Affected by Gene Dosage, Plant Development, and Coat Protein Homology

    R1 plants of the transgenic papaya line 55-1, which expresses a single coat protein (CP) gene of the mild strain of the papaya ringspot virus (PRSV) HA from Hawaii, were previously shown to be resistant only to PRSV isolates from Hawaii. Two transgenic papaya cultivars were subsequently derived from line 55-1. UH SunUp (SunUp) is homozygous for the CP gene insertion and UH Rainbow (Rainbow) is hemizygous for the CP gene because it is a F1 hybrid of a cross between SunUp and the nontransgenic papaya cultivar Kapoho. To determine the various parameters that affect the resistance of SunUp and Rainbow, plants at different developmental stages (younger and older) were inoculated with PRSV isolates from Hawaii, Brazil, Jamaica, and Thailand. Hawaiian isolates shared nucleotide sequence identities of 96.7-99.8% to the CP transgene, and the other isolates shared sequence identities of 89.5-92.5%. Resistance was affected by CP gene dosage, plant developmental stage, and CP sequence identity of the challenge isolate. Young and older hemizygous Rainbow plants were resistant to the homologous PRSV HA (99.8% homology to CP transgene), while only older Rainbow plants were resistant to the other Hawaiian isolates (96.7% homology). However, all inoculated Rainbow plants were susceptible to PRSV isolates collected from Jamaica, Brazil, and Thailand. In contrast, SunUp was resistant to all PRSV isolates, except the one from Thailand, regardless of the plant developmental stage. Resistance to the Thailand isolate, which shares 89.5% homology to the transgene, was observed only with SunUp plants inoculated at an older stage. Steady state RNA analysis and nuclear run-on experiments suggested that resistance of the transgenic papaya is RNA-mediated via post-transcriptional gene silencin

    An easy way to solve two-loop vertex integrals

    Negative dimensional integration is a step further dimensional regularization ideas. In this approach, based on the principle of analytic continuation, Feynman integrals are polynomial ones and for this reason very simple to handle, contrary to the usual parametric ones. The result of the integral worked out in D<0D<0 must be analytically continued again --- of course --- to real physical world, D>0D>0, and this step presents no difficulties. We consider four two-loop three-point vertex diagrams with arbitrary exponents of propagators and dimension.     Nomenclature of grapevine leafroll-associated putative closteroviruses

    Comparative immunoenzymatic (ELISA), immunoelectron microscopic (IEM) and immunoblotting tests were carried out with antisera produced in different laboratories and commercial diagnostic kits on closterolike viruses reported in the literature under the name of grapevine corky bark-associated virus (GCBaV) and grapevine leafroll-associated viruses IIa and IIb (GLRaV IIa and GLRaV IIb). The results of these studies have established that GCBaV is the same as GLRaV IIb and that both viruses are apparently identical to an isolate of GLRaV-2 identified in France, whose designation as the authentic GLRaV 2 is proposed. GLRaV IIa is serologically distinct from all known clostero-like viruses of the grapevine and, therefore, the provisional name of grapevine leafroll-associated Virus 6 (GLRaV-6) is suggested for it
