    Clinical trial of the effects of coenzyme Q10 supplementation on glycemic control and markers of lipid profiles in diabetic hemodialysis patients

    Abstract Purpose: The current study was conducted to determine the effects of coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) supplementation on glycemic control and markers of lipid profiles risk in diabetic hemodialysis (HD) patients. Methods: This randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial was performed among 60 diabetic HD patients. Subjects were randomly allocated into two groups to take either 120 mg/day of CoQ10 supplements or placebo (n= 30each group) for 12 weeks. Results: After 12 weeks of intervention, CoQ10 supplementation, compared with the placebo, resulted in a significant decrease in serum insulin concentrations (− 2.5 ± 4.0 vs.+ 2.8 ± 5.3 μIU/mL, P < 0.001), homeostasis model of assessment estimated insulin resistance (− 0.9 ± 2.1 vs. + 1.2 3.0, P = 0.002), and significant increase in the quantitative insulin sensitivity check index (+ 0.009 ± 0.01 vs. − 0.02 ± 0.05, P = 0.003). In addition, a trend toward a greater decrease in serum triglycerides (− 5 ± 53 vs. + 17 ± 44, P = 0.078) and VLDL-cholesterol levels (− 0.9 ± 10 vs. + 3 ± 9, P = 0.078) was observed in the CoQ10 group compared to the placebo group. We did not observe any significant effect of CoQ10 supplementation on fasting glucose, HbA1c and other lipid profiles compared with the placebo. Conclusions: Overall, our study supported that CoQ10 supplementation to diabetic HD patients for 12 weeks had beneficial effects on markers of insulin metabolism, but did not affect fasting glucose, HbA1c, and lipid profiles.     Wind farm reactive power optimization by using imperialist competitive algorithm

    In this paper a new evolutionary computing method based on imperialist competitive algorithm (ICA) is used for optimization of the reactive power in a wind farm. The output power and also the reactive power of wind farms are not constant due to the oscillation in wind speed. Reactive power optimization is known as an efficient way to have an improvement in power quality and also to reduce power loss. The conventional optimization algorithms have some drawbacks, such as slow convergence and premature. ICA as one of the newest optimization algorithm could be applied in order to optimization of the reactive power and overcomes the difficulties which are coming from the traditional methods. In this paper, the reactive power consumption of a wind turbine is optimized by using (ICA) method. To illustrate the application of the method, a wind farm with some uncertainties is provided. Finally the results of the ICA method are compared with the one of conventional method. Results show that the proposed reactive power optimization method is simple and effective

    Energy efficient torque vectoring control

    Tire forces are at the heart of the dynamic qualities of vehicles. With the advent of electric vehicles the precise and accurate control of the traction and braking forces at the individual wheel becomes a possibility and a reality outside test labs and virtual proving grounds. Benefits of individual wheel torque control, or torque-vectoring, in terms of vehicle dynamics behavior have been well documented in the literature. However, very few studies exist which analyze the individual wheel torque control integrated with vehicle efficiency considerations. This paper focuses on this aspect and discusses the possibilities and benefits of integrated, energy efficient torque vectoring control. Experiments with a four-wheel-drive electric vehicle show that considerable energy savings can be achieved by considering drivetrain and tire power losses through energy efficient torque vectoring control

    Psychometric Evaluation of the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale Modified for Body Dysmorphic Disorder for Adolescents (BDD-YBOCS-A)

    The Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale Modified for Body Dysmorphic Disorder for Adolescents (BDD-YBOCS-A) is a clinician-rated measure of BDD symptom severity in youth. Despite widespread use in both research and clinical practice, its psychometric properties have not been formally evaluated. The current study examined the factor structure, reliability, validity, and sensitivity to change of the BDD-YBOCS-A in 251 youths with BDD attending two specialist clinics. A principal component analysis identified two factors, explaining 56% of the variance. The scale showed good internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.87) and adequate convergent and divergent validity. In a subgroup of participants receiving BDD treatment (n = 175), BDD-YBOCS-A scores significantly decreased over time, demonstrating sensitivity to change. BDD-YBOCS-A change scores over treatment were highly correlated with severity changes measured by the Clinical Global Impression – Severity scale (r =.84).     MAGIC eyes to the extreme: testing the blazar emission models on EHBLs

    Extreme high-energy peaked BL Lac objects (EHBLs) are blazars whose synchrotron emission peaks at exceptionally high energies, above few keV, in the hard X-ray regime. So far, only a handful of those objects has been detected at very high energy (VHE, E > 100 GeV) gamma rays by Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes. Very remarkably, VHE observations of some of these blazars (like 1ES 0229+200) have provided evidence of a VHE gamma-ray emission extending to several TeV, which is difficult to explain with standard, one-zone synchrotron self-Compton models usually applied to BL Lac objects. The MAGIC collaboration coordinated a multi-year, multi-wavelength observational campaign on ten targets. The MAGIC telescopes detected VHE gamma rays from four EHBLs. In this paper we focus on the source 1ES 1426+426 and its X-ray and VHE gamma-ray properties.
