Improved decision for a resource-efficient fusion scheme in cooperative spectrum sensing
Paper presented at at 2015 International Workshop on Telecommunications (IWT), 14th to 17th of June, Santa Rita do Sapucai, Brazil. Abstract Recently, a novel decision fusion scheme for cooperative spectrum sensing was proposed, aiming at saving resources in the reporting channel transmissions. Secondary users are allowed to report their local decisions through the symbols of binary modulations, at the same time and with the same carrier frequencies. As a consequence, the transmitted symbols add incoherently at the fusion center, forming a larger set of symbols in which a subset is associated to the presence of the primary signal, and another subset is associated to the absence of such a signal. A Bayesian decision criterion with uniform prior was applied for discriminating these subsets. In this paper we propose a modified decision rule in which the target probabilities of detection and false alarm are taken into account to produce a large performance improvement over the original decision criterion. This improvement comes with practically no cost in complexity and does not demand the knowledge of any additional information when compared to the original rule
Towards Natural Inflation in String Theory
We provide type IIB string embeddings of two axion variants of natural
inflation. We use a combination of RR 2 form axions as the inflaton field and
have its potential generated by non perturbative effects in the superpotential.
Besides giving rise to inflation, the models developed take into account the
stabilization of the compact space, both in the KKLT and large volume scenario
regimes, an essential condition for any semi-realistic model of string

Characterizing the firing properties of an adaptive analog VLSI neuron

Biologically Inspired Approaches to Advanced Information Technology. 2004;3141:189-200.We describe the response properties of a compact, low power, analog circuit that implements a model of a leaky-Integrate & Fire (I&F) neuron, with spike-frequency adaptation, refractory period and voltage threshold modulation properties. We investigate the statistics of the circuit's output response by modulating its operating parameters, like refractory period and adaptation level and by changing the statistics of the input current. The results show a clear match with theoretical prediction and neurophysiological data in a given range of the parameter space. This analysis defines the chip's parameter working range and predicts its behavior in case of integration into large massively parallel very-large-scale-integration (VLSI) networks
Do stochastic inhomogeneities affect dark-energy precision measurements?
The effect of a stochastic background of cosmological perturbations on the
luminosity-redshift relation is computed to second order through a recently
proposed covariant and gauge-invariant light-cone averaging procedure. The
resulting expressions are free from both ultraviolet and infrared divergences,
implying that such perturbations cannot mimic a sizable fraction of dark
energy. Different averages are estimated and depend on the particular function
of the luminosity distance being averaged. The energy flux, being minimally
affected by perturbations at large z, is proposed as the best choice for
precision estimates of dark-energy parameters. Nonetheless, its irreducible
(stochastic) variance induces statistical errors on \Omega_{\Lambda}(z)

Spectral Polarization and Spectral Phase Control of Time and Energy Entangled Photons
We demonstrate a scheme to spectrally manipulate a collinear, continuous
stream of time and energy entangled photons to generate beamlike,
bandwidth-limited fuxes of polarization-entangled photons with
nearly-degenerate wavelengths. Utilizing an ultrashort-pulse shaper to control
the spectral phase and polarization of the photon pairs, we tailor the shape of
the Hong-Ou-Mandel interference pattern, demonstrating the rules that govern
the dependence of this interference pattern on the spectral phases of the
photons. We then use the pulse shaper to generate all four polarization Bell
states. The singlet state generated by this scheme forms a very robust
decoherence-free subspace, extremely suitable for long distance fiber-optics

Neuroplasticity Subserving Motor Skill Learning
Recent years have seen significant progress in our understanding of the neural substrates of motor skill learning. Advances in neuroimaging provide new insight into functional reorganization associated with the acquisition, consolidation, and retention of motor skills. Plastic changes involving structural reorganization in gray and white matter architecture that occur over shorter time periods than previously thought have been documented as well. Data from experimental animals provided crucial information on plausible cellular and molecular substrates contributing to brain reorganization underlying skill acquisition in humans. Here, we review findings demonstrating functional and structural plasticity across different spatial and temporal scales that mediate motor skill learning while identifying converging areas of interest and possible avenues for future research
The roles of online and offline replay in planning
Animals and humans replay neural patterns encoding trajectories through their environment, both whilst they solve decision-making tasks and during rest. Both on-task and off-task replay are believed to contribute to flexible decision making, though how their relative contributions differ remains unclear. We investigated this question by using magnetoencephalography (MEG) to study human subjects while they performed a decision-making task that was designed to reveal the decision algorithms employed. We characterised subjects in terms of how flexibly each adjusted their choices to changes in temporal, spatial and reward structure. The more flexible a subject, the more they replayed trajectories during task performance, and this replay was coupled with re-planning of the encoded trajectories. The less flexible a subject, the more they replayed previously preferred trajectories during rest periods between task epochs. The data suggest that online and offline replay both participate in planning but support distinct decision strategies
Ketamine for Refractory Headache: A Retrospective Analysis.
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The burden of chronic headache disorders in the United States is substantial. Some patients are treatment refractory. Ketamine, an N-methyl-D-aspartate antagonist, provides potent analgesia in subanesthetic doses in chronic pain, and limited data suggest it may alleviate headache in some patients.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective study of 61 patients admitted over 3 years for 5 days of intravenous therapy that included continuous ketamine to determine responder rate and patient and ketamine infusion characteristics. Pain ratings at 2 follow-up visits were recorded. An immediate responder was a patient with decrease of 2 points or greater in the numerical rating scale (0-10) from start to final pain in the hospital. Sustained response at office visits 1 and 2 was determined based on maintaining the 2-point improvement at those visits. Patients were assessed daily for pain and adverse events (AEs).
RESULTS: Forty-eight (77%) of the 61 patients were immediate responders. There were no differences regarding demographics, opioid use, or fibromyalgia between immediate responders and nonresponders. Maximum improvement occurred 4.56 days (mean) into treatment. Sustained response occurred in 40% of patients at visit 1 (mean, 38.1 days) and 39% of patients at visit 2 (mean, 101.3 days). The mean maximum ketamine rate was 65.2 ± 2.8 mg/h (0.76 mg/kg per hour). Ketamine rates did not differ between groups. Adverse events occurred equally in responders and nonresponders and were mild.
CONCLUSIONS: Ketamine was associated with short-term analgesia in many refractory headache patients with tolerable adverse events. A prospective study is warranted to confirm this and elucidate responder characteristics
Current state of antimicrobial stewardship in children’s hospital emergency departments
BACKGROUND Antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASPs) effectively optimize antibiotic use for inpatients; however, the extent of emergency department (ED) involvement in ASPs has not been described. OBJECTIVE To determine current ED involvement in children's hospital ASPs and to assess beliefs and preferred methods of implementation for ED-based ASPs. METHODS A cross-sectional survey of 37 children's hospitals participating in the Sharing Antimicrobial Resistance Practices collaboration was conducted. Surveys were distributed to ASP leaders and ED medical directors at each institution. Items assessed included beliefs regarding ED antibiotic prescribing, ED prescribing resources, ASP methods used in the ED such as clinical decision support and clinical care guidelines, ED participation in ASP activities, and preferred methods for ED-based ASP implementation. RESULTS A total of 36 ASP leaders (97.3%) and 32 ED directors (86.5%) responded; the overall response rate was 91.9%. Most ASP leaders (97.8%) and ED directors (93.7%) agreed that creation of ED-based ASPs was necessary. ED resources for antibiotic prescribing were obtained via the Internet or electronic health records (EHRs) for 29 hospitals (81.3%). The main ASP activities for the ED included production of antibiograms (77.8%) and creation of clinical care guidelines for pneumonia (83.3%). The ED was represented on 3 hospital ASP committees (8.3%). No hospital ASPs actively monitored outpatient ED prescribing. Most ASP leaders (77.8%) and ED directors (81.3%) preferred implementation of ED-based ASPs using clinical decision support integrated into the EHR. CONCLUSIONS Although ED involvement in ASPs is limited, both ASP and ED leaders believe that ED-based ASPs are necessary. Event-driven simulations of a plastic, spiking neural network
We consider a fully-connected network of leaky integrate-and-fire neurons
with spike-timing-dependent plasticity. The plasticity is controlled by a
parameter representing the expected weight of a synapse between neurons that
are firing randomly with the same mean frequency. For low values of the
plasticity parameter, the activities of the system are dominated by noise,
while large values of the plasticity parameter lead to self-sustaining activity
in the network. We perform event-driven simulations on finite-size networks
with up to 128 neurons to find the stationary synaptic weight conformations for
different values of the plasticity parameter. In both the low and high activity
regimes, the synaptic weights are narrowly distributed around the plasticity
parameter value consistent with the predictions of mean-field theory. However,
the distribution broadens in the transition region between the two regimes,
representing emergent network structures. Using a pseudophysical approach for
visualization, we show that the emergent structures are of "path" or "hub"
type, observed at different values of the plasticity parameter in the
