Toolboxes and handing students a hammer: The effects of cueing and instruction on getting students to think critically
Developing critical thinking skills is a common goal of an undergraduate
physics curriculum. How do students make sense of evidence and what do they do
with it? In this study, we evaluated students' critical thinking behaviors
through their written notebooks in an introductory physics laboratory course.
We compared student behaviors in the Structured Quantitative Inquiry Labs
(SQILabs) curriculum to a control group and evaluated the fragility of these
behaviors through procedural cueing. We found that the SQILabs were generally
effective at improving the quality of students' reasoning about data and making
decisions from data. These improvements in reasoning and sensemaking were
thwarted, however, by a procedural cue. We describe these changes in behavior
through the lens of epistemological frames and task orientation, invoked by the
instructional moves
Maleimido substituted aromatic cyclotriphosphazenes
4-Aminophenoxy cyclotriphosphazenes are reacted with maleic anhydride to produce maleamic acids which are converted to the maleimides. The maleimides are polymerized. By selection of starting materials (e.g., hexakis amino or trisaminophenoxy-trisphenoxy-cyclo-triphosphazenes), selection of molar proportions of reactants, use of mixtures of anhydrides and use of dianhydrides as bridging groups a variety of maleimides and polymers are produced. The polymers have high limiting oxygen indices, high char yields and other useful heat and fire resistant properties making them useful as, for example, impregnants of fabrics
3-Dimensional simulation of multistage depressed collectors on microcomputers.
A three-dimensional (3-D) package for simulation of asymmetric and crossed-field multistage depressed collectors for microwave tubes has been developed. This package is based upon the 3-D finite-difference code KOBRA3-INP. The main features of the package are a user-friendly input interface, postprocessors for collector analysis and calculation of secondary electron trajectories, and versatile output graphics. Both PC and. mainframe versions of the package have been developed. The results of simple benchmark tests and those of simulation and analysis of asymmetric and crossed-field collectors including the effects of secondary electrons are presented. It is found that the asymmetric hyperbolic electric field collector shows very low backstreaming. It is shown that the representation of trajectories in energy space gives a better insight into the behavior of individual trajectories than plotting in coordinate-space. Distilling Quantum Entanglement via Mode-Matched Filtering
We propose a new avenue towards distillation of quantum entanglement that is
implemented by directly passing the entangled qubits through a mode-matched
filter. This approach can be applied to a common class of entanglement
impurities appearing in photonic systems where the impurities inherently occupy
different spatiotemporal modes than the entangled qubits. As a specific
application, we show that our method can be used to significantly purify the
telecom-band entanglement generated via the Kerr nonlinearity in single-mode
fibers where a substantial amount of Raman-scattering noise is concomitantly

Mechanism of margination in confined flows of blood and other multicomponent suspensions
Flowing blood displays a phenomenon called margination, in which leukocytes
and platelets are preferentially found near blood vessel walls, while
erythrocytes are depleted from these regions. Here margination is investigated
using direct hydrodynamic simulations of a binary suspension of stiff (s) and
floppy (f) capsules, as well as a stochastic model that incorporates the key
particle transport mechanisms in suspensions -- wall-induced hydrodynamic
migration and shear-induced pair collisions. The stochastic model allows the
relative importance of these two mechanisms to be directly evaluated and
thereby indicates that margination, at least in the dilute case, is largely due
to the differential dynamics of homogeneous (e.g. s-s) and heterogeneous (s-f)

The Many Electron Ground State of the Adiabatic Holstein Model in Two and Three Dimensions
We present the complete ground state phase diagram of the Holstein model in
two and three dimension considering the phonon variables to be classical. We
first establish the overall structure of the phase diagram by using exact
diagonalisation based Monte Carlo (ED-MC) on small lattices and then use a new
``travelling cluster'' approximation (TCA) for annealing the phonon degrees of
freedom on large lattices. The phases that emerge include a Fermi liquid (FL),
with no lattice distortions, an insulating polaron liquid (PL) at strong
coupling, and a charge ordered insulating (COI) phase around half- filling. The
COI phase is separated from the Fermi liquid by a regime of phase coexistence
whose width grows with increasing electron-phonon coupling. We provide results
on the electronic density of states, the COI order parameter, and the spatial
organisation of polaronic states, for arbitrary density and electron-phonon
coupling. The results highlight the crucial role of spatial correlations in
this strong coupling problem.Comment: Final versio
ASASSN-14dq: A fast-declining type II-P Supernova in a low-luminosity host galaxy
Optical broadband (UBVRI) photometric and low-resolution spectroscopic
observations of the type II-P supernova (SN) ASASSN-14dq are presented.
ASASSN-14dq exploded in a low-luminosity/metallicity host galaxy UGC 11860, the
signatures of which are present as weak iron lines in the photospheric phase
spectra. The SN has a plateau duration of 90 d, with a plateau decline
rate of 1.38 in V-band which is higher than most type
II-P SNe. ASASSN-14dq is a luminous type II-P SN with a peak -band absolute
magnitude of -17.70.2 mag. The light curve of ASASSN-14dq indicates it
to be a fast-declining type II-P SN, making it a transitional event between the
type II-P and II-L SNe. The empirical relation between the steepness parameter
and mass for type II SNe was rebuilt with the help of
well-sampled light curves from the literature. A mass of
0.029 M was estimated for ASASSN-14dq, which is slightly
lower than the expected mass for a luminous type II-P SN. Using
analytical light curve modelling, a progenitor radius of cm, an ejecta mass of and a total
energy of ergs was estimated for this event. The
photospheric velocity evolution of ASASSN-14dq resembles a type II-P SN, but
the Balmer features (H and H) show relatively slow velocity
evolution. The high-velocity H feature in the plateau phase, the
asymmetric H emission line profile in the nebular phase and the
inferred outburst parameters indicate an interaction of the SN ejecta with the

Determining number of independent sources in undercomplete mixture
Separation of independent sources using independent component analysis (ICA) requires prior knowledge of the number of independent sources. Performing ICA when the number of recordings is greater than the number of sources can give erroneous results. To improve the quality of separation, the most suitable recordings have to be identified before performing ICA. Techniques employed to estimate suitable recordings require estimation of number of independent sources or require repeated iterations. However there is no objective measure of the number of independent sources in a given mixture. Here, a technique has been developed to determine the number of independent sources in a given mixture. This paper demonstrates that normalised determinant of the global matrix is a measure of the number of independent sources, N, in a mixture of M recordings. It has also been shown that performing ICA on N randomly selected recordings out of M recordings gives good quality of separation
