Construction and demolition waste - a shift toward Lean Construction and Building Information Model

    Get PDF
Waste in the construction industry is a devastating dilemma, especially that construction and demolition activities are considered as the highest waste generator globally. Countries have developed regulations: policy-makers and professional associations have provided norms and policies to manage C&D waste. Previous studies, however, have revealed insufficiencies in the current regulations and norms in incentivizing the industry practices toward waste prevention, since its culture is characterized by the gap in technological use, insufficient knowledge, poor planning, and poor information flow. This research provides a literature review on the current research findings and trends in managing C&D waste. Then based on design theory and theory of production, an exploratory research consisting of BIM and Lean construction concepts is provided. Lean can maximize the value of construction by addressing waste within portfolios, projects, and operations; BIM offers an enhanced collaborative platform with improved design practice and information management throughout buildings’ life cycle. The proposed conceptual framework enables economic, environmental, and social benefits to allow practitioners collaborate, analyze, and minimize construction waste throughout buildings’ life cycle.(undefined

A Comprehensive Review on Pretreatment Methods for Enhanced Biogas Production from Sewage Sludge

    No full text
The treatment of municipal wastewater is considered a cornerstone for the protection of public health and environment. However, a major issue derived from this process is the large quantities of produced sewage sludge. Although anaerobic digestion is a widely applied method in Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) aiming to stabilize the sludge and to recover energy in the form of methane, it is usually limited due to the reduced decomposition efficiency and slow biodegradation rate of this recalcitrant substrate. For this reason, various pretreatment methods have been proposed aiming to modify the sludge structure, solubilize the organic matter, and decrease the crystallinity of sludge so as to accelerate hydrolysis and consequently enhance methane production. The current research is a comprehensive collection of recent advances in pretreatment technologies that can be potentially applied in wastewater treatment facilities. The critical review analysis presented herein reveals the several advantages and drawbacks, as well as the technical opportunities of the pretreatment methods and provides an assessment of their feasibility/applicability from an energetic, environmental, and economic point of view

Respiratory distress syndrome in infants with impaired intrauterine growth

The recently introduced intrauterine growth curve, based on ultrasonically estimated foetal weights, was retrospectively applied to an inborn population of 883 infants born before 33 gestational weeks at the University Hospital of Lund, during 1985-94. The estimation of birthweight deviation resulted in 630 (71.3%) infants with a birthweight appropriate for gestational age (AGA), 244 (27.6%) infants with a birthweight small for gestational age (SGA) and 9 (1.1%) infants with a birthweight large for gestational age. Birthweight deviation was associated with an increased mortality [odds ratio (OR) adjusted for gestational age 1.29 per SD (12%) change in birthweight for gestational age, 95% CI: 1.10-1.50; p = 0.002]. At gestational age 25-28 weeks, SGA-infants had an increased incidence of respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) as compared to AGA-infants (OR adjusted for gestational age: 1.98, 95% CI: 1.12-3.52; p = 0.019). At gestational age 29-32 weeks, SGA-infants had a lower incidence of RDS as compared to AGA-infants (OR adjusted for gestational age: OR 0.52, 95% CI: 0.34-0.80; p = 0.003). After adjustment for confounding variables, infants born at gestational age 25-28 weeks from mothers with pre-eclampsia, appeared to be a high-risk group for RDS, whereas at the age of 29-32 gestational weeks, negative birthweight deviation had a protective effect against RDS. Antenatal corticosteroid administration appeared to have a less beneficial effect on mortality, RDS and cerebral haemorrhage in infants born SGA vs in those born AGA

Gridless optical networking field trial: flexible spectrum switching, defragmentation and transport of 10G/40G/100G/555G over 620-km field fiber

We present results from the first gridless networking field trial with flexible spectrum switching nodes and 620 km of installed fibre links. Signals at 10G, 12.25G, 42.7G, DP-QPSK 40G, DP-QPSK 100G and 555G are generated, successfully transported and switched using flexible, custom spectrum allocation per channel. Spectrum defragmentation is demonstrated using integrated SOA-MZI wavelength converters. Results show error-free end-to-end performance (BER<1e-9) for the OOK channels and good pre-FEC BER performance with sufficient margin to FEC limit for the 40G and 100G coherent channels as well as for the 555G super-channel
